History GO - Business Plan
Upon trying to do some research and start thinking about a business plan, I’ve realized that I know absolutely nothing about developing an app and need to do a significant amount more work deciding exactly what History GO will look like and then do a ton more research just to come up with estimates on things like development timelines and costs. As it stands I have a few ideas for some of the things outlined for the lecture discussion.
I would definitely need a full development team, writer, graphic designer, and possibly a historical consultant for this as it is a fairly complex mobile game which uses augmented reality and is history based.
With the potential to be used for both tourism and education, I’ve found a number of funding options that may work to get the app going.
Creative Scotland would be one place to apply for grant money to put towards something like this, especially as I intend to limit it to Edinburgh initially before expanding to other cities.
I could also consider getting in touch with Historic Environment Scotland for funding or partnership opportunities.
One of the better places to market an app like this might be various social media sites, as well as possibly reaching out to tourist locations which feature in the game to advertise the app with posters at the actual locations as well as on the locations individual websites.
As this is a mobile game, the route to market would be through the Apple and Google Play stores.
I tried to find the development costs of similar games, particularly Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Pokemon GO as they’re the most similar games currently on the market. I was unable to find anything giving me the development cost for HP:WU but found several different blog posts breaking down the likely development cost of Pokemon GO, which sounds helpful, but one website estimated the production cost at $400,000 to $600,000, another at $25 million, and another at $29 million.
At this stage, I do not know enough about the cost of individual aspects of development to be able to give an estimate for development cost for History GO.
Ideally this would be a free app that generates revenue via ads and microtransactions, but there could be an option for a paid version without ads. The price of that would depend on the cost of developing the app.
