Maker Monday at Birmingham Open Media - Monday June 29th, 17.15

MakerMonday is a regular Monday workshop that aims to foster innovation with digital technology. The sessions will be held in the evening of the final Monday of each month at Birmingham Open Media (except when the final Monday is a bank holiday, in which case it's the penultimate Monday) .

The next event will be on the theme of Open Innovation. Our guest expert will be Pablo Ripollés from Media Lab Prado. They are a long standing FabLab and originators of the Interactivos? event that has brought us many superb creative technology projects. Pablo will show some inspirational work and then lead a workshop session. Andrew Erskine - The Unpredictable City at #disruptbrum, 24/03/15

The unpredictable city: how smart places are unlocking creativity, innovation and serendipity

At next week’s #disruptbrum event, Andrew Erskine will be talking on how cities are helping to drive the creative and digital technology through new networks and spaces as well as the role of culture and higher education in a time of economic disruption and innovation.

Bio

Andrew works as a consultant to governments, businesses, universities and cultural organisations in the UK an internationally . His main focus is on innovation and the creative economy, with an especial interest in culture, heritage, entrepreneurship, the business of culture, knowledge exchange and transfer, creative places and spaces.

Core to his work is the exploration of creativity and its transformative effect on all aspects of our lives. In particular he is interested in how individual and collective creative capital can be unlocked through new uses of technology, approaches to learning and skills, improved public services and organisational development.

Andrew is a Senior Associate of Tom Fleming Creative Consultancy.

Introducing the BBC’s Stefan Shaw to #disruptbrum, 24/03/15.

We’re delighted to welcome the BBC’s Stefan Shaw to our upcoming event at BomLab on Tuesday 24th March. Stefan currently leads their Digital Guerrilla Unit in Birmingham which focuses on content innovation for young audiences.

We had a quick chat with Stefan to discuss his role and what he’ll be talking about at the upcoming event.

“I’m a digital creative with a love for storytelling and innovation.”

“My background’s in digital marketing and I always liked how storytelling could disrupt digital advertising. Likewise, I like how digital marketing techniques can now disrupt broadcasters. In fact more broadly I like how contradictions can lead to new ideas and how the impossible can in fact be a very good idea!”

Recruiting for SEPP: Digital Placements (Madrid)

Sampad is now recruiting for 5 placements to take part in a collaborative prototyping workshop and international symposium at Medialab Prado in Madrid, Spain.

The placements are for individuals who want to increase their skills and knowledge about the use of digital technology within the arts. Anyone who is involved in the creative industries (producer, performer, manager, administrator, technician, etc) will benefit from these placements. There is a particular focus on under-represented minority ethnic individuals, but this is not exclusive. Ultimately we will be looking for the best suited people for this opportunity. Interactivos was a two week project that brought together the creative minds of artists and digital developers. In an upstairs studio at mac Birmingham we created a technical workshop environment in which we welcomed 7 projects to be worked on and developed intensively over a 2 week period. #Interactivosbham exhibition extended to Friday 25th July

Now showing in the Hub at mac birmingham (extended until Friday 25th July), an exhibition and film documenting the recent Interactivos? Birmingham project and seminar which took place in June at mac. Artists and technologists worked together collaboratively over a two week period to develop interactive digital media prototypes.

Contributors to the exhibition include: Cham Athwal (Birmingham, UK); Javier Cruz (Chile); Rafaelo Fernandes de Carvalho (Brazil); Anaisa Franco (Germany); Divya Kasturi (Stevenage, UK); Ivan Petkov (Austria); Alberto Rivero (Spain) and whoun (aka Juan Cedenilla).

The Interactivos? model was created by Medialab-Prado as a hybrid between a production workshop, a seminar and a showcase, providing a space for reflection, research and collaboration. Interactivos? Birmingham was led by Birmingham City University in partnership with Medialab-Prado, sampad, mac birmingham and BBC Birmingham.

Meet Javier Cruz at mac Birmingham, Friday 11th July 2-5pm.

Javier Cruz will be at mac birmingham on Friday 11th July between 2pm and 5pm to share the prototype, Rhythm Body, that he developed at the recent international Interactivos? Birmingham project.

Please come along at any time between 2pm and 5pm and meet and chat with Javier and interact with, explore, dance with, develop sounds for the prototype.

“Playing in a rock folk band in Chile was the inspiration for Rhythm Body, showing me how music has mathematical concepts intrinsically built into it Rhythms can be generated around these concepts and I believe that everyone is able to create these rhythms, using the body as a trigger. Rhythm body employs sensors around the body which read movement using gyroscopes and accelerometers. The sensors are processed by an Arduino, which sends the information to an Android device via wireless Bluetooth. Once in the Android, the data is processed and presented in a musical and visual way”.

Javier was one of 7 project leads who developed a prototype as part of Interactivos? Birmingham, responsive and immersive future technologies, which was a two week international collaborative workshop and seminar event taking place at mac birmingham in June which brought together the creative minds of artists, scientists, designers and digital developers.

An exhibition documenting the project is currently running in The Hub at mac until 20 July.

We invite you to the Foyle Studio at the mac Birmingham to see the finale of Interactivos? Birmingham, a two-week international workshop which has brought togetherthe creative minds of artists, scientists, designers and digital developers from across the globe.

Over the past fortnight, seven amazing projects have been developed. The showcase is your chance to get up close with the projects in action, chat with the leaders and collaborators and to see some of the prototypes on offer.

You will also hear from the project leaders about the development of their projects, the process involved and the challenges they have addressed.

The event is a celebration of open, international collaboration exploring creative uses for responsive and immersive future technologies.

The Project Showcase is an intimate opportunity to view the projects ahead the Interactivos? Birmingham exhibition which launches on Thursday 3rd July.

We are well into the last week of #interactivosbham. Most of the project teams are working on developing their prototypes and refining their ideas according to the materials they have available, and where possible, improvising or adapting their original concepts accordingly. It is fascinating working alongside the teams to see how they address the challenges they face.

It is in this spirit that Mark Brill, Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University, came in today to work alongside the projects teams to help troubleshoot any pressing issues and develop immediate solutions to problems.

As an example of a team's ability to improvise and develop new approaches, Divya, Chris and the Forgot Your Password team have been experimenting with motion technologies to find the right one to capture dance movements. They started using a Leapmotion in the first instance but it didn't capture the level of movement that they were looking for. Instead, they have hacked a Kinect, which has enabled them to capture more complete body movements, all for the purpose of moving their project from an installation to a performance piece.

Their example perfectly demonstrates the ability of the project owners to use their intuition and judgement, the power of people-led creativity, and that the technologies are merely the enablers of the creative idea.

We conducted a busy Twitter chat session yesterday with the experts, presenters and collaborators of #interactivosbham as well as with all of 'you' out there!!

We asked five questions during the chat:

Q1. What's the best collaboration you've ever been a part of, and why?

Q2. Technical knowledge is less important than curiosity. What do you think?

Q3. Sometimes it helps not to know how difficult your project is beforehand. Discuss.

Q4. Digital maker or passive consumer: how would you describe yourself?

Q5. Do new technologies such as Raspberry Pi make it easier or harder for anybody to be an artist/create something?

Weekly Round up #Interactivosbham

After a whole week of collaboration on immersive technologies, here is an update on progress at #interactivosbham.

Participation and support has been really positive. We have had a great response from collaborators who have supported the leaders on their seven projects.

The Delicate Boundaries installation designed by our expert Chris Sugrue is on show to the public until the end of the week. Have you seen it yet? For us, this epitomises the kind of digitally immersive interactive engagement between the artist and the public that typifies Interactivos.

The project leaders presented their shopping list to a panel of facilitators. These were materials that they needed in order for the projects to begin.

As items from the shopping lists arrived towards the end of last week, and project owners and collaborators have been relentlessly developing their ideas, calculated schematics, writing lots of code, and drawing up and developing various models.

On the Forgot your Password project, we have a husband (collaborator) and wife (project owner) pairing leading its development, and although he is only a weekend collaborator, we understand he has been collaborating from when they first met.

We now into the final few days of Interactivos.

A few prototypes have already been made and demonstrated. We will report back as project leaders put together their final designs.
