The “Rubens Vase” (Byzantine Empire). Carved in high relief from a single piece of agate, this extraordinary vase was most likely created in an imperial workshop for a Byzantine emperor.

Castas by Miguel Cabrera (1695-1768)
The Casta paintings (17th-18th c.) of the Spanish Colonial period consisted of 12-16 miscegenous triads, showing the mixing and changing of races (or castas). Casta was believed to predict behavior & temperament and was used to justify social standing. All combinations of race were named. (x)
