Interior wall insulation for a rainy climate
Cavity walls were first introduced as a way to prevent driving rain from soaking through the exterior wall to ruin the decorated finish. These cavities are filled with fluffy insulation which can get easily soaked during a very rainy season. For this reason, interior wall insulation is not ideally suited for wet coastal areas.
Often an external wall insulation solution is best for climates where driving rain is a problem. If the seasons are more tolerable with less rain or mild cold, interior wall insulation (within the cavity of the wall) could be ideal.
For a rainy area, one possible interior wall insulation solution is"partial fill"; where stiffened mineral wool "batts", are attached against the inner side of the wall (closest to the inside of the house) leaving a clear open cavity area next to the outer most wall. More recently some new homes have been built with "full fill" insulation, where the whole cavity is filled with mineral wool batts as the house is built.
