LF: lore-building/RP partners
I feel like I’m writing a dating ad, but here goes!
I want to work on my lore and bios with one or more people (probably individually) who also would like to work on their own stories and dragons. I’ve found I have the most fun and productive conversations when we get invested in each other’s lore and characters - and maybe even RP (not required though).
About my lair/lore: My lair is pretty much in line with FR ‘canon’.I have a decently fleshed-out history of the clan. Most dragons have small bios but few have a detailed history. Here’s a link to my lair and another to my lorebook.
If you are interested in maybe talking lore and are over 18 (I am) feel free to PM me here on or FR!
Writer’s Advice: “No One Cares About My Lore” Part 2
In our previous post, we discussed the basics of making your lore accessible to readers. Today we’re also talking about accessibility, but in a different way.
When you ask yourself, ‘Why does nobody care about my lore?’ I want you to ask yourself another question:
Am I writing my lore like fanfic?
This is not to degrade fanfic. Fanfic is an art form unto itself, with its own conventions and tropes. It takes skill to effectively write in another person’s style and to keep updating ongoing serialized content. I don’t want anyone to think I’m ragging on fanfic here.
But one of those conventions of fanfic, which is utterly unique to fanfic, is that fanfic assumes a basic familiarity with the characters.
When people complain about published fiction feeling ‘fanfic-y’, what they mean is that the story treats the readers as if they were reading a fanfic. The story sets up only the most basic of exposition, if any at all, and then goes. It just jumps right into the conflict with very little set-up. And it can get away with it, because for the most part, the people reading fanfic already know the characters, setting, conflict, etc. Fanfic is utilitarian in how it tells stories, which is fascinating and admirable.
But it does not translate well into original fiction. Like your lore.
Something that I see in a lot of lore - my own included, I’m going to go ahead and drag myself here - is that most lore writers already know everything about their characters, have written a bio and made posts to their blog about them, and so when it comes time to write actual stories, they skip over all that exposition and just jump right into the meat of the story. And if you’re writing purely for yourself, that’s fine. If you want a wider audience, however, you can’t just jump into things.
This is about accessibility - not material accessibility like the previous post, but about accessibility of your characters and prose. A lot of lore ends up pretty esoteric because the writer doesn’t bother to explain themselves, and that makes it harder for someone
Do not assume that your readers have followed along with all your bios and posts. Do not assume that they are already as attached to your characters as you are. Build the characters up in your story. Give your audience a reason to care. Write about the status quo before the conflict starts and disrupts it.
I’m sure you love your lore. I know I love my own. And that love and care comes through in so many people’s writing. But that alone cannot carry original fiction. If you want to write for a wider audience, you need to think about the needs of the reader.
Writer’s Advice: “No one cares about my lore” part 1
This will be a two parter. This first post addresses the basics of accessibility, the second post will be writing tips. I will edit in a link to part 2 when I post it in the next few days.
Edit: Part 2 is available here
Why people are not engaging with your lore
Previously, we discussed whether or not you should post your lore. So okay, you went and posted your lore. But it got zero notes! None of your lore posts get notes! Clearly, no one cares and you should just stop posting, right?
WRONG. You don’t need to stop posting, you just need to take a critical look at the accessibility of your lore.
I cannot count the number of times where I’ve been browsing the FR tag and see a lore post that looks kind of interesting, but when I start reading it, it’s clearly in the middle of an arc. But where is the rest of the arc? I don’t know!
The thing is, most readers won’t know. And most won’t be bothered to go looking for it. We live in an era where time is money. Someone isn’t going to take three minutes out of their busy day to hunt down the lore that you didn’t bother to make accessible. They’re just going to keep scrolling. So, how do you make it accessible?
Option 1: Tagging
“But I do tag my lore!” You may be saying. “I make sure every post is tagged #Larry’s Lore so that people can click on it and see more!”
But is that really accessible? Think about how Tumblr’s tagging system works. If I click on the tag on desktop, I’ll go to your blog, where I will see all your lore... in reverse chronological order. At least with desktop, though, I can click the next page button until I get to the end and read backwards. But again, I’m a busy guy, so I probably won’t.
It gets even worse when someone is on mobile. I click your tag, and not only am I taken to your blog where your lore is in reverse chronological order, there is no pagination! I can’t even skip to the end! And since mobile blogs don’t show read mores, I may have to do a LOT of scrolling to get to the first post. For some of us using older phones, that can cause the app to crash.
You can still use tags, though! You just have to be smart about it.
First, don’t rely on tags in the tags themselves. Tag your lore, yes, but also include a link to the tag on your blog.
Second, use the chronological tag feature! What’s that, you may ask, because very few people know about the feature? It’s an easy way to look through a tag in chronological order. All you have to do is add one thing to the end of the url. It should look like this:
[yourblogurl].tumblr.com/tagged/my-lore/chrono
Again though, make sure you link it IN YOUR LORE POST so that mobile users can make use of it!
Option 2: Chapter links
Tagging is good, but - at least in my opinion - chapter links are better. This way, if I just missed your last chapter, I can easily navigate back to it. I’ll use my main FR blog as an example:
At the beginning of each lore post, I have three links: a link to the previous chapter, a link to a table of contents, and a link to the next chapter. Obviously, the ‘next’ link gets edited in after I make the next lore post. This easily allows people to move from one lore post to the next, making for easy flow as they read, like turning pages in a book, instead of tons of scrolling up and down a tag search.
Clicking on the ‘list’ link will bring readers to a table of contents, like so:
This is a page I created on my blog, which appears in the links on the top of the theme, so people can access it easily. However, a normal blog post that you go back and edit will also work. On this page, people can pick which chapter they read, which is especially helpful if someone wants to re-read a certain chapter, either to get caught up or because they just liked it!
The Take-Away:
Now, these tips alone will not bring people running to your lore. We’ll cover how to get people hooked in the next post. But these DO make it so that people have more reader-friendly entry points into your lore, which is CRITICAL when you are posting serially on a site that doesn’t keep all your posts together (like FF.net or AO3).
Writer’s Advice: “Should I post my lore?”
This question is often followed by one or both of the follow sentiments: “Would anyone even be interested in it?” or “It’s not like anyone is interested in it...”
These are traps. These are excuses we artists make for ourselves to keep ourselves from having to put ourselves out there for the rest of the world. They’re a self-defeating mindset that says that if we aren’t already a success, there’s no point in even trying. I want to discuss how to break yourself out of that mindset and just post your lore already!
“Would anyone even be interested in it?”
Say you’re trying to learn how to cook. You want to feed something to a friend or loved one, to see what they think, to get an outsider’s opinion of your skills. You invite them over to dinner, but you word it as the following:
“Are you interested in the general concept of food?”
Well... yes, they probably are. Being someone who is close to you, they’ll probably go along with the dinner anyways to support you. But when you ask a stranger that question, they’ll wonder: what kind of food are we talking about here? Steak? Dessert? Microwavable burritos? Are you making it for them, or just ordering? Are you planning a casual meal, a dinner party, a restaurant?
Simply put, it’s too broad of a question. The answer is a tentative ‘yes’, but without more information, they can’t say for certain.
Whereas if you were to ask, “Are you interested in a panko-crusted salmon served over a rice pilaf with a side of steamed vegetables,” you would get a much more definitive answer.
If you’re trying to sell someone on your lore, actually make a pitch. “My lore is about an ex-cult leader living in the desert and trying to redeem herself in a village of people who hate her. Anyone interested in reading it?”
“It’s not like anyone is interested in it...”
This is a self-defeating phrase. You just told everyone reading your post that no one else is interested in it. Why then should we be interested?
This is a question that is fishing for either butt-pats (”No, of course I’m interested!”) or for negative affirmation - the silence is taken as a message that of course no one’s interested in your lore, and therefore you can go back to safely not posting anything.
The Take-Away:
Ultimately, you can ask people if they want to read your lore as much as you want, but until you actually post it, no one will know for sure. It’s like buying a car without a test drive, to mix my metaphors a little. Many people want to get behind the wheel and feel it out before they make a commitment, and while some people will buy sight-unseen on the word of the dealer, most people won’t.
SO JUST POST YOUR FRICKIN LORE ALREADY!
Hey y’all
Sorry I dropped the ball so hard on this, I got very busy for a pretty long while there. I’m gonna try to get back to posting more prompts, but in the meantime, I’m going to post some general lore-writing advice posts, so stay tuned!
Lore Buddy Search Weekend
Hey folks!
So a while back there was some talk about trying to find ‘Lore Buddies’, someone that you can talk to about lore, give and get writing critique, share ideas, heck, maybe even roleplay with.
As this blog nears 200 followers, I thought now would be a good time to try out a lore buddy search!
How it works:
You fill out and send in the form at the bottom of this post via the submit box to this blog. DO NOT send it as an ask! You will have until July 7th, 23:59 ST, to submit.
I will compile all of the submissions into a masterpost. This post will go up at noon server time on the 8th.
You may then look through the post to find someone who you think may make a good lore buddy. Once you think you’ve found someone, you contact them via their instructions.
What happens after that is up to the two of you! You may make multiple lore buddies if you want, but it is totally okay to turn someone down if you’ve already found a buddy or don’t think you’d be a great match, as long as you do so politely.
What happens if you miss the submission deadline or don’t find a buddy:
Don’t worry! I intend to host lore buddy searches on a regular basis (I’m thinking every 3 months). And the masterpost will stay up until the next search begins as a link on the blog, so you can reach out to people at any time.
I will also be open to ideas on how to improve the search for the next one - we’ll try this format and see how it goes, then adjust from there.
The form: (please respect word counts)
Submit forms HERE
Flight Rising username and ID number:
Flight Rising tumblr:
Brief overview of your lore: (150 words max)
What you are looking for in a lore buddy: (50 words max)
Additional information: (50 words max)
How to contact you: (Tumblr, FR, Discord handle, etc)
Please note that the lore share prompt this week will be delayed until the 9th due to this event.
A Lore Discord might also be a fun idea!
If anyone wants to make a lore Discord, they can feel free, but I personally do not have the time, energy, or personality to maintain one, sorry!
Also PLEASE don’t reblog this post or send me applications! This ended on July 7th, it is now September! This event is no longer ongoing, thanks!
Lore Share: Emperors
How do Emperors play into your lore? How do other dragons view them? What do other dragons do about them?
The Cloudscrape Marauders live high up in the Cloudscrape Crags, a highly secluded place, so while they do get news of what is happening around them, unless it concerns the territory they reign over it usually doesn’t matter to them. Only the temptation of treasures and riches, the prospect of increasing their power or a threat to their clan really lets them spring to action, so an Emperor roaming around Sornieth and wreaking havoc? Welp, that’s not their problem. It doesn’t affect them, and the clan leader, Barachiel, is also not so stupid as to send some of her warriors hundreds of miles away just in case they might retrieve some bits that they can make money off. They are much more useful here, in the clan, were they can fight to protect it or to raid other clans.
Though that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any dragons that don’t care at all. There’s some rather … unorthodox collectors, you could say, that certainly would be more than delighted to own parts of that emperor for their very own collection, or a few young spirits who dream of glory. There is, for example, Antares, who claims to own the head of an emperor and keeps it locked away. She does her best to preserve it and its beauty, even going so far as to decorate it with flowers. She also has the odd habit of speaking to it as if it were her child. Antares also collects other creatures and body parts, and she certainly wouldn’t mind owning a few pieces of the emperor currently roaming around. But she’ll probably wait until the beast is slain and then seize her chance to collect some of the remnants.
The eldest of the clan, Loki, has fought some emperors in his youth, and the tales ain’t pretty ones, and certainly not glorious either - so many deaths, so much bloodshed, so many comrades lost in gruesome ways … there is nothing pretty or glorious about battling one of those beasts.
Other than that, however? Emperors have never really played a big part in the clan’s life. Where they live, the chances of one re-surrecting are low (or at least they think so), and they certainly don’t go out hunting them - what for, anyway? It’s too much of a hassle. Most of their dead clan mates (if their bodies could be found at all) are scattered all around the Southern Icefield, so two or more imperials lying close together is unlikely, unless individuals from other clans are buried nearby, which they do not check on.
Walk, Walk, Fashion Baby - @interlorebrary-loans prompt: Fashion
What kind of fashions are there in your clan? Who makes the textiles? What do your dragons put on to show their status?
Generally, the occupations of the dragons determines their attire. Armor sets are rarely full sets, unless the dragons actively collect/craft it themselves and forging is a skill many pick up.
For example - Thanatos takes after Baldwin, both in his breed change, and his lackadaisical approach to lab safety. He’s since taken better precautions, using reinforced lab coats and safety masks, but gloves? What are those?
And Alto, who took work much too seriously, and now resemble the plants she studies so much.
Trends also include drapes - wing covers, robes, cloaks and ribbons abound in the lair. Certain older denizens are also sporting antlers BUT the most important item many dragons own are bags, and other items of holding.
Because pockets.
Crochet and knitting is a very common hobby, and most dragons are able to sew to an extent. Squall knows leather working, but does not prepare his own hides.
There are no weavers in the clan.
Specific dragons - Stormsurge
Her clothing is loosely based off victorian morning dresses. But they are often elaborately sequined with flecks of obsidian. The shawl pictured is a crocheted monstrosity that is based off the skin she wears.
Aphelion
A tundra in the hot, hot lands of the Great Furnace? You would be surprised. She wears short shorts and loud loud shirts. She keeps her fur trimmed shorter than it would be naturally, and keeps it out of her face with barrettes. Yeah, those shirts are much louder than what Guy Fieri wears in that picture, and are a riot of reds, yellows and oranges.
Foxfire
1920s flapper dresses, and accessories.
Calliope
Full professional attire. All her clothing is tailored, and would not stand out in a crowd full of office workers.
Empress of the Evening
The last rays of the setting sun were still slipping through the stained windows of the apartment 53, a cramped place on the seventh floor of the one of the oldest buildings in that part of the Shifting Expanse. Exhausted and half-asleep, Henrik threw off his dirty overalls and almost collapsed on his favorite armchair by the window. Finally, the Friday arrived! Henrik slowly sipped his cold and bitter coffee and grabbed the yesterday’s issue of The Sornieth Times, letting his soothing muscles relax. Of course, hundreds of Stormcatcher’s propaganda posters yelled at workers that ‘WEEKEND IS FOR THE WEAK! GET BACK TO WORK!!’, but Henrik, frankly, didn’t give a damn. They could try to pry his weekend from his cold, dead claws.
…And, well, they did.
“Dad, dad, come quickly, come to see this, it’s so cool, DAD, FATHER, HELLO!”

Lore Share: Emperors!
How do Emperors play into your lore? How do other dragons view them? What do other dragons do about them?
Your write-up may be as simple or complex as you want it to be. Be it an infodump or full-on prose, we want to see it!
Tag your post #interlorebrary loans and we’ll reblog it here for other people to see and interact with! (Adding lore as a reblog or simply pinging me without using that tag means your post may not be seen.)
Lore Share: Theme Song
Prompted by @interlorebrary-loans. Links to the song and the dragons in this story will be sorted in a reblog because Tumblr is a mess and will refuse to show posts with embedded links in the tags.
Not exactly a theme song for my entire lair (it used to be), but this song matches a certain family in my lair. This is was supposed to be a very short piece of lore about them (and also somewhat of an origin story for Actual Cinnamon Roll Sunflower), but about a third of the way in it ended up turning into The Boreas Show oops, my bad.
Check it our under the cut. (Content warning for uhhhh a violent scene but it’s incredibly vaguely described and mostly just implied because I’m squeamish myself)

Lore Share: Theme Song
Alright, so, my lore is, at this point, broken up into 2 arcs, the second of which is ongoing. Each arc deals with its own central conflict. I title all of my lore chapters after songs that inspire me during the writing process, so each arc has its own soundtrack, which you can listen to by clicking through to the lore chapters (they’re linked in the lyrics at the top of each chapter).
That said, each arc does have a stand out ‘main’ theme in my head.
Arc 1: Elyakim’s Monsters
Arc 1 is exemplified by How It Ends by DeVotchKa.
And in your soul they poked a million holes But you never let em show Come on, it’s time to go And you already know Yeah, you already know how this will end
DeVotchKa is just a fantastic band in general and if you’ve never heard of them I suggest checking them out. The album this song is from (also titled How It Ends) has a bigger influence on me and my writing than any other album I’ve ever listened to.
This song is about defeat, death, coming to accept the end of things. It’s a tragic song, but with a few uplifting spiritual moments. I feel it fits with the tragedy of Arc 1. A village is decimated, a cult leader loses her last grasp on power, an abuser has to face the people he’s turned into literal monsters. There is no way this is going to end well, but it there may be room for some hope.
Arc 2: Restless Spirits
Arc 2 is exemplified by I Come With Knives by IAMX.
I never promised you an open heart or charity I never wanted to abuse your imagination
I come with knives I come with knives And agony To love you
IAMX is another of my favorite bands, though I’d caution that anyone who wants to check them out is in for a lot of heavy nihilism, themes of depression and self-harm, and kinky sex.
The tension of monotony, the implications of dangerous sex/toxic relationships, and, of course, blades all have major ties to this arc. Not to mention the aesthetic of the music video is really on-brand for my lair. I can’t say too much more because of spoilers, but this is the title of a chapter coming up.
Lore Share - Theme Song
love this prompt tbh, i always make tons of playlists for new characters/world-building so it was fun trying to narrow down my selection!
I ended up with three that i think capture the Tavern pretty well - the general purpose, the positive side, and the darker side.
One More Light - Linkin Park
Who cares if one more light goes out? / Well I do
The Tavern is a place of rest and recovery for weary souls - anyone that feels lost on their path or is at a crossroads in their life (or death). Immediately upon entering the Tavern, you are greeted by name and invited to stay the night to relax. Whether you need to talk over a drink, in a group, or in a more private setting, it’s clear from day one that the entirety of the Tavern is behind you and will support you on your journey to peace or recovery.
Drops In The Ocean - Hawk Nelson
I want you as you are not as you ought to be / Won’t you lay down your guard and come to me?
I have this song as my founder’s theme, and I thought I’d include it to capture the “positive” side of the Tavern. The heart and soul of the place (literally) is Vahlokdozii, who shaped the space between the mortal and ethereal worlds to create a refuge for anyone that needed his help. He listens without judgement, offering only his boundless and unconditional understanding and affection. After talking with him for just a few minutes, even the most guarded dragon is ready to lay themself bare and be absolved of their troubles. i also uhhh am weak for religious imagery
Whisper - Burn the Ballroom
A beast in the business of selling forgiveness and buying salvation with wine / And he cries out to God how can you claim them all when I know that they are all mine?
This song serves as the theme song for my clan’s “charlatan”, a man born of a magically-corrupted cult leader and the ethereal nature of limbo itself. He’s taken the purpose of the Tavern a bit too far: “You’re burdened by your past actions? How about I just… erase that for you? A simple trade my friend, how can you resist?” While others at the Tavern champion the method of working through troubles with time and self-reflection, Dez offers the tempting alternative to simply erase negative experiences from your memory. In exchange all he asks is a little information, a memory, an emotion… is that really so much to give up in exchange for peace?
Lore Share: Theme Song(s) by @interlorebrary-loans
Alright, so as some of you already know, I’ve had an “opening” and “ending” theme for my main lore clan for a while now. This prompt finally gives me an excuse to discuss them!
Both songs are by a band called Thayer Cabin.

Lore Share: Theme Song
@interlorebrary-loans
This is a fun prompt for me, because I love making playlists and I’m always thinking and coming up with songs to fit stuff. For the clan as a whole:
Shake Hands With Your Uncle Max by Allan Sherman (Bc of that whole close-knit family-togetherness vibe, also, a traveling plastic salesman seems like exactly the kind of dragon I’d have. Hmm.)
Old Birds by the Bumper Jacksons (Small town, slow pace of life, peaceful, things could be a lot better but they could be a lot worse too)
The Heart of Life by John Mayer (Things can suck, but everything turns out alright in the end. No sad endings allowed)
Why is the Desert by Richard Kiley and Steven Warner (Why the heck isn’t this song available to listen anywhere?!? This one is maybe just a little gratuitous, it’s just cuz deserts and it’s a beautiful song and from one of my very favorite musicals)
Cool Water by Marty Robins (The non-gratuitous version of Why is the Desert. They’re in a desert, it’s had to live, water and who has it and how hard it is to get is real important in my lore too)
One World by Todd Rundgren (See Old Birds above, except there’s also young dragons in this small town! Young dragons who are cool and hip and deserve a theme song with electric guitars and drums! Also the idea of a small community where everybody knows everybody else, and the freedom that comes with relative isolation)
Forgotten by the Swingles (Here’s where the relative isolation comes in. Also, a long history which almost no one knows the whole story of, which has both high and low points and is fast becoming a mystery.
And a few songs for individual dragons, bc I just wanna share, but without the explanations bc it’s getting late here:
Garden Song by David Mallett (Helen and Ned and Murr)
Whatchugot by Caro Emerald (Toscanini, Vic)
The World Ender by Lord Huron (Elisabuff)
UFO by Country Joe and the Fish (Ripper)
Maybe Tomorrow by Terry Bush (London)
Red Silk Stockings by the Bumper Jacksons (Calypso)
Mary’s Kitchen by Old Crow Medicine Show (Kate)
Radio Girl by Marshall Crenshaw (Petticoat)
