Subject #432 - STATEMENT
Subject #432 is a time-based video recording by Lachlan, Lilli, Phoebe and So-Hyeon. It explores the use of documentation and authoritarian abuse of power.
The theme which we were inspired was Documentation and Editing and how this can alter the nature of . In particular, we were interested in Jenny Holzerâs Redaction Paintings Series (2009), which uses declassified documents in order to sensor and erase the information. Additionally, after researching and developing our knowledge around documentation and editing, we were greatly inspired by Ignas Krungleviciusâs Interrogation (2009) which is based on the police transcript of a 2004 murder investigation in the United States after Mary Kovic allegedly killed her husband. In the video work, all visual information is condensed and refined into lines of text from Kovicâs interview and synchronised with a minimalistic electronic soundtrack. The relationship between text and sound in this artwork inspired us to explore this in our own work.
In our work, we used sound and text to create an interrogation of between an authoritative figure and a victim. We centred our ideas around treason and the government's ability to conceal important information. The sound was evocative in demonstrating the original recording of the interview. This differs from the documentation of the interview in which we portrayed on the screen. This juxtaposition of information reined the corrupt nature of authority in a distorted, which is not so different from our own.
The process of production showed difficulties in establishing a clear idea on the  exact storyline of our video. The type of medium and topic of the assignment were agreed upon, however, we all had different opinions on how to generate the script. Other than our initial dispute, it was smooth sailing and we all thoroughly enjoyed the process.
In conclusion, we all found the experience and transformation of our assignment challenging and exciting. We all believe that our time-based production is successful and relative to interrogations, the government, and the accused.
