The sweetest friends!!!!!
my childhood Jade from the early 2000s (sorry for shirt mark) vs 20th anniversary Jade I got for Christmas this year! Jade has always been my favorite, and opening this after so many years felt like greeting an old friend again. ♡♡
Hula Hair Barbie (1996)
Bratz First Original Release (2001)
*images aren’t mine* OFFICIAL PICS OF THE
BRATZ X MEANGIRLS DOLLS
so excited I hope there will be a way to buy them in Australia as for now it seems they will be SUPER LIMITED and only available on Bratz . com
I haven't dipped my toes back into Licca chan collecting due to things happening in 2020 that made buying from Japan unviable and I sort of never got back into it since then.
But earlier this year Takara Tomy announced a new reproduction of the Generation 1 Licca chan sculpt to celebrate their 100th anniversary as a company and I was very excited as it would be one that was in a full set outfit and not one intended to be redressed like the Licca Castle reproductions.
Luckily Amazon Japan had a preorder listing for this doll come up back in late May so I eagarly awaited my doll.
She finally got an official release at the end of July and I have been so excited to get my hands on her since I've been seeing Japanese collectors say she is different to previous reproduction Licca chan dolls.
I haven't gotten many new Licca chan dolls in person but this was such a magical experience for me to not only handle a doll I'be been waiting months to see, but a vintage style one that feels brand new.
It is interesting to me how she was a lower price point than the Licca Castle reproductions since the packaging lacks the cording that's usually there to hold the dolls in place. Instead she's held in with plastic ties and it took a lot more care to debox her without damaging the box.
She's absolutely darling as a doll and I was shocked how affordable she is but I guess the budget cuts meant she doesn't have a doll stand and the packaging lost some of the aspects that allowed for reboxing a doll.
Out of box, the 100th Anniversary retro Licca chan doll feels significantly weightier in hand, which makes sense as her lips are solid vinyl rather than hollow limbs like vintage Licca chan.
It's also amazing how adding hip and shoulder rotation really brings life to a vintage sculpt that couldn't do either, plus a neck tilt is so darling, I can see why Licca fans are doing that so often with their ones.
The dress is made from a medium cotton drill fabric with a custom printed middle panel and almost sheer white piece on top. I have no idea if this is based on a vintage dress from Licca's archive but it definitely feels like a 1967 dress.
Her mesh socks are odd but they definitely feel like somerhing you'd see on a late 60s doll, and something that wouldn't have survived to this day so it's fun in that regard.
I also adore how they approached doing her hair bows this time around as theyre on miniature clear plastic combs that tuck into the hair. The last time they tried to do this accessory they used wire bobby pins that looked out of scale and stuck out weirdly on the head so this feels much more display worthy and significantly more dainty.
As someone who can't afford the lavish prices a vintage Licca chan fetches, I think this reproduction really knocks it out of the ballpark.
One day I would love to get a true Generation one Licca chan to keep as an example of the different eras of her, but this reproduction hits that sweet spot in a way I haven't feel from a reproduction doll in the longest time.

School Cool Barbie (2000) ✏️ 🗒️
there was a post going around, about a little girl’s ragdoll who falls in love with the girl’s mother’s expensive porcelain doll on the mantlepiece. so as part of my quest to make every cutesy tumblr wlw post a reality here it is!!!!
i had a whole little story about these two and the adventures they have, but who knows if i’ll draw it. i could see myself doing more of this little comic if people like it tho!!!

Part 1
part 3
and the conclusion!! thanks everyone for all the support!! i am considering making this available as a minizine somehow…will have to look into that

Absolutely loathe the fact that modern doll collecting has become about consumerism and getting the next new thing while the idea of curating and choosing dolls to add to collections shouldn't be bound to when they came out tbh
i had to do a mass unfollow on instagram not just because I was getting FOMO but from the brain freeze every time someone said "I don't really like her but..." not I could fix her, not there's potential for pieces and parts here just she was there I had to.
now i'm not about to throw the first stone, I know my weaknesses. the desk doll system is partly to weed out what I like as a concept and what actually continues to spark joy (Holiday Barbie Brunette Superstar didn't have the it factor for example)
but it really threw me for a loop that people were not considering second hand dolls at all, especially for customs, they were buying creeproductions to be repainted and rerooted. Others were buying to have the full set because otherwise it's incomplete (???).
I've been asked about particular sculpts and pointed folks towards lines with quality screenings of that face mould and they'll say "shame it's not sold anymore" and they mean in stores, because BNIB second hand or trading with collectors hasn't crossed their minds or they think that's too risky. I was going to say that maybe it has to do with the loss of forums but I see plenty my age going on huge sprees to 'complete' a collection, not a wishlist, the full set.
One of the best things ever is when someone discovers MyScene or Novi Stars or Create a Monster and has a blast. They find the Lollipop girls or Cutie Pops and integrate it into their happy shelf. but yeah it was disheartening to see that some people used the barbie movie to find their old toys and others dived head first into the $50-100 barbie with questionable quality control Kool-Aid.
A part of me wonders if there's a maturity/experience gap? I legit enjoy a little bit of everything when it comes to doll collecting, but it didn't take more than a few years of concerted adult collecting and customizing for space to become a very, very precious commodity. Not to mention that I grew up experiencing times when my parents were timing 99 cent kindle books just right to make sure we made it through the month. When a Goodwill find can be over budget, you have to ditch the "gotta catch 'em all" philosophy real fast.
So if you are a newbie collector who has never experienced financial hardship to that extreme, and you're just riding the happy chemical braindump of each new purchase like a toddler watching unboxing videos, maybe you just haven't hit any natural barriers to force yourself to think critically about your collecting?
I get the original point that it's annoying to see that kind of thoughtless consumerism flooding social media, but it's kind of like a 6th Grader discovering creepypasta for the first time. It's more than a little annoying that they assume anyone "old and boring" has never heard of this stuff, but you kind of have to let them figure it out on their own what's "real" and what's legend or ghost story. As long as the basic tools for media literacy are available, eventually they will stop telling you about that lost episode of Spongebob or how Angelica's hallucinating the Rugrats.
So maybe there's hope for the seemingly unending wave of consumerist would-be collectors too?
I think it's less of that cuz I've been in online collector circles since I was 12 and it's less maturity and experience but more of how rapid consumerism has infected even spaces like doll collecting.
Because when I was 12 I didn't have this pressure to get something before it disappeared or that people would stop talking about it, and that most online spaces were like "Yeah this doll is 3 years old but I'm glad I finally got her." Like, getting as many dolls as possible is a natural instinct for newbies but the barrier was a lot lower with thriftstores and secondhand prices.
Nowadays I see $30 to $50 dolls REGULARLY be pushed or talked about as soon as they come out, and for people to complete collections of them as soon as possible, and by the time I've ruminated and thought about it, no one even engages with that, but rather they moved on.
It doesn't help that companies themselves push this sales model of buying really expensive dolls at the risk of selling out or having to pay scalper prices. I do remember when you would have at least a few months to think about purchasing a collector doll but now everything sells out in a minute or is only available somewhere exclusive.
Idek I guess I just miss how easy going the doll hobby was but it's really stressful to think this is how people are getting introduced to the hobby nowadays and getting burnt out on it.
"What if I made the 1959 Barbie with a 2003 Polly Pocket?" I said,
"I can repaint her whole face, that definitely won't hurt my eyes!" I said.
Yeah, I really like the 1959 (first) barbie doll design, so I decided to have fun by making a tiny doll of it, rerooting her hair was surprisingly easy! I think I'll do more Polly pocket customization in the future...
If I ever find one with hair again!
