the stages of whale fall || [riso prints]
thinking about being a deep sea creature. your world is dark, hungry, and endless. How every meal is a gift, not a guarantee. then, one day, a banquet lands before you. an abundance incomprehensible.

Hi, I just stumbled upon your page here and I love your artwork! I was curious about something. As an artist, do you find that your general "engagement" with your creative content is better here vs on Bluesky? Like audience interactions and traffic to your shop, that sort of thing. I've been curious about bluesky as an alternative to tumblr for art and connecting with other creatives, but I don't know many people who use it 0:
I've been mulling over this since I got it.
A lot of what the "best" social media for art depends on what kind of art you make and how much/in what ways you're willing/able to engage with social media.
Tumblr:
✅ Slow social media, i.e. posts can continue to circulate days/months/years after their initial posting. ✅ Ppl are chatty in the tags. 99.99% complimentary ✅ Great for detail-heavy, vertically oriented pieces ✅/❌ It's generally a slow build. Rewards persistence ✅/❌ Discoverability can be good if you have relevant tags to use (like a fandom, etc.), original art can take longer to find an audience 🟰 I haven't tried tumblr communities, so I can't speak to their effectiveness in connecting with other artists ❌Bad for horizontal art ❌Nsfw banned
Bluesky:
✅Not algorithmically driven (at this time) ✅Rewards earnest engagement with other users, seems pretty community-oriented ✅ Least punishing (but still punishing) for horizontally-oriented art ✅ Cool with nsfw (at this time) ✅/❌ Generally a slow build. Rewards persistence 🟰 Rewards shortform content ❌ Discoverability. Tags there haven't really worked for me? ❌ Bad for vertical art ❌ Seems fast to me. Posts drop off a few days after initial posting.
Also worth noting, staff on both sites have made… questionable calls in the past, and no social media is forever.
I recommend any creative who wants to be online also start a mailing list. I've been begging my friends to start their own for ages because I never happen to be online at the right time to see their posts. Let's all just start emailing eachother jpegs.

Drew some poisonous & venomous sea creatures for my first foray into risograph printing. I’m so pleased with how bright the colors turned out in-person. [prints]
