mental illness made me so desperate for joy that i forgot it was this simple⊠feeling the ocean against your skin⊠a really good guitar riff⊠sun on your back⊠holding the door for a stranger⊠a cold shower on a hot dayâŠâŠ.. the world is like a cradle and i am just a little baby. eyes wide open there is so much to see
Here We Go Again
Looking around, he couldn't find even the slightest reason why he belonged there for the third year. The doors were easily three times his height, darkly stained and thicker than any doors he'd ever seen. The walls of the building were made with a dark brick, windows placed evenly all around. Elixr could see a mass of people through each window and even the doors that were propped open, welcoming the new students for the new school year.
"Another year, another group, another reason to get out of here." Elixr rolled his eyes and turned to his older brother with a grin. "You wanna join me?"
"Elixandr, get your ass in there and get your class schedule. Why can't you ever just be normal?" Chuckling and shaking his head, Jaxon shoved Elixr towards the doors and walked off.
"I can't stand your ass, Jax!" Elixr started walking backwards towards the doors, staring at his brother and flipping him off with a grin. "You better not flake tonight!"
"Excuse you, I'm trying to walk here." A firm shove from behind him causes Elixandr to freeze and turn around, coming face to face with an annoyed glare on a 'too pretty' face. "Do you mind?"
Elixandr just stares at the girl, his usual smirk sitting on his face as he tries to figure out who he's looking at. "I do mind, actually. Who are you? Oh, and my bad miss. I didn't see you there." He shrugs and takes a step back to get a better look at her.
She glances at the boy, feeling annoyed by his shit-eating grin, yet she was also soothed by it. It reminded her much of her father, whom she missed dearly- both her parents actually, but she tried not to think about that too much. Millie wasnât one to wear her emotions on her sleeve as she was always taught that vulnerability could lead to her demise. She pulls her attention away from him, directing it towards the sea of people.
âThen maybe you should watch where youâre going.â She rolls her eyes, not bothering to let him get her worked up.
âAre you not going to introduce yourself?â The boy furrows his brows, watching her, tilting his head to the side.
Millie continues to wait in what was supposed to be a line, wishing she could just skip to the front. Itâs only a class schedule. What happened to single filed lines ? Alphabetical order? Is this how the start of her junior year as a transfer student to Briarwood Heights would truly go? Disorganized and annoyed by a giant with blue eyes? Heâs as tall as her uncle Moose. Maybe if she ignored him heâd go away.
âIâve got all day, you know?â He rocks back and forth on his feet, sliding his hands into his pockets.
Millie pulls out her phone, hoping to pretend to check a message or something, but of course, there was no service. She could feel her cheeks warming as her irritation grew.
âWhatâs the fucking hold up with this line?â The outburst escapes her.
The cacophony of the room came to a sudden stop as eyeâs immediately raced to her.
âYoung Lady.â A voice boomed from the front of the crowd. It seemed to part the sea of people in front of her. âWhat is your name?â A tall, elderly man stood in a black and maroon robe with gold accents. His beard hung low and was as a white as snow.
She stood tall, keeping her eyes on the, obviously important, man.
âMillie, sir.â Her voice is firm, followed by an awkward smile and the urge to run away and hide.
Sheâd never do that, no matter how much she wanted to.
âAmelia, is it? Weâve been expecting you here at Briarwood. Your record truly matches your .. eager spirit to learn and grow. However, this building is for returning students. New students and transfers must report to Anubis Hall for your welcome lecture and class schedules. From there youâll be joining everyone for the welcome ceremony and breakfast. Donât be afraid to ask for guidance, your peers are here to assist you. And please, refrain from the use of profanity in the future.â
He sits and just like that, everything returns to normal. Sheâs got her dad to blame for the anger issues. Once annoyed, she becomes a ticking bomb. At least no one could see the look of embarrassment on her faceâŠ. except the boy. Thereâs that grin again. He seems impressed.
Exlir just smirked as he watched the girl walk off towards Anubis Hall, a tinge of pink to her face as she went. He couldn't help himself as he called after her in an overly proper tone, "Yes miss Amelia, please do watch your profanity. Some of us have sensitive ears, my dear."
Professor Jamison gave him a look of disapproval but had a hint of a smile on his bearded face, used to Elixandr's quirks. "Mr. Laynn, a word please?"
With one last look at the girl, Amelia, as she sashayed her way across campus, her bag bigger than her, he walked past the long line of students in front of him and went straight to the front.
"Sir?" He knew his voice held a note of respect because Jamison was one of the few members of the staff at Briarwood who didn't treat him and his friends like trash.
Professor Jamison shook his head, noting the looks being thrown their way. Some curious, some angry, but most just impatient and ready to get to their dorm rooms to get ready for tonight. "I must ask that you not give our transfers and new students the wrong impression. This year is a very important year for Briarwood and we all want it to be as smooth of a transition as possible, am I correct?" He took a moment to stroke his beard as he gave Elixandr a serious look. "That being said, I do hope I can trust you to give Miss Amelia a helping hand should she need it. It should be simple given you have the same schedule."
"I apologize, Professor. I would be glad to help out a fellow student, especially one so new. Would you happen to have a copy of that schedule for me, sir?" Elxir wasn't even surprised he had the same schedule. She wasn't high class, snobby, rude and overly classy. That meant she had to be a hunter or a delinquent, and we all had the same classes because no parent wanted their child to be around a bad influence and no super wanted their child around a hunter. Accepting the packet he was handed, Elixr looked the professor in the eyes and nodded, "She's got a friend in me, sir."
-----
A few hours later
-----
Elixandr glanced at his reflection and nodded. It would do. The party started in half an hour and he still needed to make sure his brother was ready.
Jaxon rolled his eyes as his brother came into his room without so much as a knock. "Can I help you?"
"Just making sure you're getting ready." Elixr smirked at the older of the two twins, by eight minutes. "Can't have people thinking my twin isn't as cool as me." Elixr laughed as Jaxson rolled.his eyes, a smile playing on his lips.
"I saw you with that new transfer earlier, the one Professor Jamison spoke to this morning. Showing her around or have you already found your first conquest of the year?" Jaxon laughed at the look on his brother's face, knowing damn good and well that Elixr didn't have conquests because he was always too busy getting into trouble. "Let's go, bro. Your girl is waiting for us downstairs."
Elixr gave Jaxon a confused looked, head tilted to the side a bit. "Why would she be downstairs? I didn't invite her."
Jaxon laughed and walked out of his room, "I did, but I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm you. Crazy considering I'm taller and hotter, but it's true dear brother. You should have seen her face when you walked off and I walked up from the opposite direction. I'm sure she thinks you're a warlock."
âWhat a jerkâ Millie thought playfully to herself as she walked across campus. He could be a nice guy after all, but itâs best she doesnât get too close- or maybe she was just afraid to. Being raised in a family of hunters isnât all itâs cracked up to be. Not for a 17 year old, anyway. By the time youâve made friends and settled into one school, itâs time to relocate. All the moving around made her a social outcast amongst the regular people - as if it werenât bad enough she already belonged to a lower rank of a whole different society. Her parents heard about Briarwood from a friend. âA place where youâd really fit in.â Theyâd say. Maybe. Maybe not. At least sheâd have some stability this time. Still, that wouldnât keep her from worrying about her family.
âHey!â An unfamiliar voice snatched Millie from her thoughts. She hadnât realized sheâd been accompanied by another girl, much like her in figure. Small, petite. She had electric blue eyes as deep as the ocean and jet black hair with a silver skunk stripe, pulled back into a sleek ponytail. âMillie, right?â The girl smiled as the two came to a stop at the end of the line at the entrance of Anubis Hall.
âHow do you-â Millie began, immediately interrupted by Skyla.
âI know things.â Skyla says , placing her thumbs through the loops of her backpack. After a moment, she burst into laughter. âGod, I love doing that to people. But youâre literally at Briarwood, you must know Iâm a psychic.â
âThat was my second guess.â Millie looked away awkwardly, trying to erase the the first mind that Skyla was some sort of stalker. Hunters are prey too. âSo, how does that work? You just had a vision youâd meet me right here or did you see it in your crystal ball?â
âNo, silly.â Skyla chuckled, âit doesnât work like that and I donât have a crystal ball.â
âShe doesnât get sarcasm.â a voice muttered from Skylaâs slightly open backpack.
âDude, are you carrying a tiny person?â Millie stared at the bag in disbelief.
âOh shut up, Bruno.â Skyla said, taking the bag off and placing it on the ground.
As she opened it a bit wider, a black cat with a similar silver skunk stripe across its right eye, nimbly hopped out.
âYou have a talking cat? What? Are you Sabrina the Teenage Witch?â Millie lets out a small laugh as she bends down to pet the creature.
âHey, do not pet me! Iâm not some kind of emotional support animal. Iâm human! H U - M A N! And donât joke about witches, alright? Theyâre the reason Iâm in this fur coat.â The cat swatted at Millieâs hand.
âThis is my brother, Bruno. His ex girlfriend is a witch so you do the math.â Skyla said, watching her brother lick his paws. âYou know how hard it is for supers and our kind to get along. This one here had to go and piss a witch off and no one will help us change him back.â
âBut arenât you two like⊠supers? I mean, being psychic and all.â Millie looked between the two of them.
âSort of. I see things and he masters telekinesis, but we also communicate with the dead and see ghosts from time to time. This campus is full of them.â Skyla adds in, âNo super wants to be seen with the Laurier Freaks.â She jokes.
âSpeak for yourself. I have lots of friends that are supers.â Bruno says, standing on all four. âCâmon weirdos, the lineâs moving.â
âHe barely has friends at all, let alone supers.â Skyla cupped her had around her mouth, whispering to Millie before walking ahead of her. âBack in the bag, Bruno. Theyâre not giving anything to a cat!â
Millie chuckled, watching the two ahead of her. Maybe sheâd come to like Briarwood after all with them around. Maybe sheâd see the guy from earlier and make for a proper introduction.

A Few Hours Later
âââ
Millie had finally finished unpacking and decorating her room. It almost felt like home. Just as sheâd fallen back on her bed, her door flung open. She rolled over to see Skyla, this time wearing makeup and a dress that matched her eyes and fit her like a doll.
âOkay, we are definitely gonna have to talk about boundaries. I could have been naked.â Mille said, sitting upright, â whatâs the special occasion?â
âPlease. Youâve got nothing I havenât seen before and Brunoâs napping in my room.â Skyla said, entering the room and shutting the door behind her. âWhy arenât you dressed?â
âDressed for?â Millie raised a brow.
âThe party. You are going, arenât you? Yes, so come on, get up.â Skyla walked over to Millieâs closet, looking through her wardrobe. âI like your style chick. Doesnât matter what you put on, just not your travel clothes. Chop, chop! Weâve got half an hour!â
âDo I have to?â Millie groaned. It was as if she and Skyla had been friends forever.
âUh, yeah. Itâs the welcome party which basically means itâs for us. Plus, I saw you there so that means I mustâve convinced you to get your booty up and get dressed. Itâs gonna be fun!â
IDK who needs to hear this but if there's something in your life that makes you feel better, but you never stick to it,
it's still actually perfectly fine to do it
and you shouldn't stop yourself from starting just because it won't be a permanent change.
Like if starting a new daily planner gives you an amazing afternoon of planning and four days where you feel in charge of your life,
why not do it?
It doesn't matter that it won't be a permanent change - 4 good days is still worth it.
If you ever catch yourself thinking, "I wish I could pray/stretch/prep/plan/do the thing, but I always get started on that and it never lasts more than a couple of days,"
what this really means is, "hey, I can feel better for a couple of days."
if this post is making you think of things in your own life that you wish you could stick to because of how good they make you feel,
just be aware:
you're not thinking of a list of ways you've failed to commit
you're thinking of a list of things that make you happy, and you should give yourself permission to start doing them as often as you want to
