I think there is something so incredibly wholesome about the phrase “Do you want to be my friend?”
Sometimes I think about how Katsu kind of fell into all his friendships. That all of his friends kinda just took him in and he begrudgingly was like “Fine.”
But like think about if you meet Katsu one day and you just watch him for a bit and decide for some reason his prickly behavior and cocky attitude and loud expletives are somehow kind of funny. Something in your mind says “Ha ha I like him. We should be friends.” So you ask him.
“Hey. Do you want to be my friend?”
“Hah?” He’s definitely caught off guard by the question. Truthfully he didn’t even know you existed until you walked up to ask him this. He studies you, trying to figure out if maybe you're playing a prank on him but he can’t help but feel like the question is genuine. He’s always had a knack for knowing who’s being fake or not.
The realization that you’re being genuine doesn’t ease his suspicion though, it only increases it. Why the fuck is this random fucking person asking if he wants to be friends? And who the fuck comes up and asks people if they want to be friends? You’re not fucking kids on a playground. You’re adults. You pay taxes and drink booze and can rent a hotel by yourself.
You blink and smile up at him as he studies you. “I think you’re funny and cool and it would be cool to be friends so what do you say? Do you wanna be my friend?”
He means to reject you, to tell you to get the fuck out of his way and stop wasting his time but there’s something so positively wholesome about how honest you are. You’re not holding any secrets behind your stare, your smile is admittedly warm and yeah, he’ll admit you’re not bad to look at, he ain’t blind or anything. He hesitates with the rejection.
Katsuki has always respected someone with guts. And you’ve got guts. He quickly scrolls through his memory of all his first interactions with his friends and not once did any of them approach him in this way. It’s the first time anyone has been so open with him. So comfortable with him upon their first meeting. He’s not an idiot. He knows his loud brashness is what keeps most people away but it doesn’t seem to bother you. In fact, you welcome it.
Katsuki thinks about how he wouldn’t have to put any extra effort into not being himself because of what others may perceive him as if he was friends with you. You’d be like a temple, someone he could maybe go to to relax a bit and stop thinking about everything. He figures he’d be able to be himself without having to think about all the consequences and that you’d embrace it.
You tilt your head as he contemplates his decision. You’re patient, you suppose it does take a bit to consider. Finally his eyes meet yours and he’s smirking a smug wily grin.
“Ya sure you can handle being friends with me? I don’t hold back and I ain’t nice.”
To his shock, you shrug and keep smiling. “I wouldn’t have asked if I thought I couldn't handle it,” you reply.
Katsuki’s only impressed for two seconds before he’s turning away from you and jamming his hands in his pocket. “Fine you can be my shitty friend,” he groans while rolling his eyes.
You skip happily next to him and he hopes you don’t see the growing blush slowly making its way across his face.
