Flik wasnât paying attention when he left the coffee shop. He didnât normally get coffee in the morning but he had been up late last night working on a new project.  He blindly opened the door with his piping hot latte in one hand before walking straight into someone.  âIâm so sorry,â he apologized looking in his bag for any tissues or napkins he might have stored in there from a previous fast food run. He came up dry and started to apologize again before seeing just who he had run into. It was Neal Burke, shit. He was a dead man.  âB-Burke, Iâm so sorry. That was a complete accident. Iâll pay for your dry cleaning.â @therealnealxhopperâ
Flik came out of his office in a mad dash looking for Dot.  âHey!â he shouted when he saw her across the room. He waved before heading over to her.  âIâm working on a new invention and I could use a second set of hands and eyes. Want to help?â he asked biting his lower lip and rocking back and forth on his feet. || @dottiescoutâ

Atta sighed, making her way over from the spot on the wall where she was leaning to look out the window. âGreat, just great. Love winter. This is not great walking home weather, lemme tell you.â Suddenly, the room went dark and Atta let out a little groan. âOh, seriously? Did you do that?â she asked, leaning on the desk to look at him. âKidding, I know that you didnât. I better go get some candles.â She made her way to the office door. âHey, itâs gonna get cold quick in here, there are some blankets in the closet over there if you wanna grab some. And could you call the number in the front of my planner on the desk? Red highlighter. Itâs the power company, maybe they can sort this.â
âOh I know. Itâs not fun walking to the subway or the blocks home when itâs like this. The absolute worst has to be the time I was walking home and it started to hail, that was kind of scary,â Flik responded.  âDo what? The lights? Yeah while messing with the computer I turned off the lights. I need more of a challenge.â He shook his head and chuckled. He started searching for the planner, once he found it he handed it to her.  âHere I know you asked me to call but I figured you could do that while I find the blankets.â

@inventiveantâ || âoh, CHRISââ thereâs the resounding pop of the bottle. That sound of midnight resounding through New York, the cheers heard from the expansive board room at ELLE where a small party was being held. Where Marissa, who forgot her glasses and somehow during the night lost her right contact lens, was trying to uncork the bottle for their celebration. And who felt the bottle of champagne slip from her hands and angle itself just right to⌠Sheâs handed off the bottle to a colleague and has made her way down the steps of the small riser and checking to see if Mr Anton, who had just been hit with a cork cap, was alright. âChrist,â she mutters, checking to see if maybe heâs gotten a concussion then realizing that maybe she shouldnât because she canât actually see. âAre you okay?â She asks, looking quite contrite for the mishap.
Flik had felt a bit guilty going to the party at Elle, he felt like he was somehow being disloyal to his other job by going to this party instead of a non-work related one or just not going to one in general. Then again it was a party at Elle and Marissa scared him more than Garrett so maybe it was better to go to this party and keep her happy. Besides this gave him a chance to see Atta and maybe even talk to her. By the time midnight came around he had had a couple of drinks and didnât feel that uncomfortable anymore - well he felt comfortable until he was hit by a cork. Thankfully it hit him in the back of the head instead of his face since he had traded in his glasses for contacts tonight. It still hurt like a bitch though so he was rubbing the back of his head when Marissa came over.  âI uh think so. It hurts quite a bit but I just got hit so thatâs normal. I think Iâm gonna be fine though,â he said wiping at one of his eyes which was starting to tear up a bit from the pain.

âď¸ â our muses get snowed in and the electricity goes out
Flik was in Attaâs office trying to fix a problem she was having with her computer. He climbed out from under her desk to check the machine and if it was doing all right when he noticed the snow coming down harder.  âSnowâs coming down pretty hard. I think the blizzard came a bit early,â he commented gesturing towards the window. He started clicking around making sure everything was working when the room turned dark. The storm must have knocked out the power.  He flicked the flashlight on his phone on so he could at least avoid walking into any of her furniture or her. âWell, I guess weâre spending another night at the office,â he said running a hand through his hair nervously. Â

Atta smiled, eyes flitting downward at his slip of the tongue before she looked back up at him. âDonât ever be sorry for being committed to work. Lord knows Iâm always at work, this is one of the few moments Iâve been out of the office in weeks.â She laughed, taking a sip of her coffee. âWell, it takes a lot of coffee to keep up with the craziness of being a Reed.â
âOh right I forgot who Iâm talking to,â Flik said chuckling and running a hand through his hair messing it up a bit.  âI guess it does. I wouldnât want to be caught between any of you and the coffee machine. Maybe Iâll get you and Dot something coffee related for Christmas.â

Atta broke into a wide smile as she slid into the seat across from him. She rarely was out of her office during the day, but sheâd decided to take a break from the hustle and bustle to grab a coffee, and it seemed Flik had the same idea. âI hope you donât mind,â she said, referring to her spot at the table. âI just feel as though I havenât seen you in ages.â
âNo of course not. I love your- I mean I enjoy your company thoroughly,â Flik answered shaking his head. He started blushing at his slip of the phrase love.  âIâm sorry, Iâve been busy. I havenât really been leaving work a lot, practically sleeping in my tiny closet size office. You know I ran into your mother other day, she was getting a coffee at the time too. If I run into Dot getting coffee next Iâll be a bit frightened.â

âHey, have you seen a squirrel with a ribbon on its tail?â Lilo asked the random man in the park. âI found him a while ago and took him home but my sister totally flipped out so I let him go, but I wanted to be able to find him again. So now Iâm just wondering if Iâm looking in all the wrong places or if he got the ribbon off or if something happened to him.â
@inventiveantâ
âA squirrel with a ribbon on its tail? On its tail?â Flik repeated the question convinced he had misheard the girl.  âNo but I wasnât really paying much attention to the squirrels running by. How did you get a ribbon on it in the first place? Arenât squirrels usually scared of people?â
metamcrphosysâ:
âOh, no. You keep doing what youâre doing. Iâm just trying to escape my incessantly ringing telephone. And getting some coffee. You know, the corporate dream.â She raises the coffee cup, a styrofoam cup with a little paper sleeve, to him. âHowâs the tech? The⌠computer and all those things I, an old person, donât understand?â
âOkay well feel free to let me know if Iâm disturbing you. If the tools make too much noise or anything. I wouldnât want to annoy or upset the boss or bossâs mom whichever your title is nowadays,â Flik said scratching at the back of his neck.  âItâs um itâs good. Most of the time it works pretty well although sometimes I get called in to fix little things or help with computer problems. Youâre not that old, you could learn to understand this stuff if you wanted to.â

@inventiveantâ // Marissa knew almost every employee, if not every employee, that came through Elle and stayed longer than a week. She liked knowing the interns, the staff, Marissa cared to know them, even if many people may see her as a hardened board member. She knew many people had that view of her, even if she was once the boss. Or perhaps because she was once the boss. Some people flitted about her should she come down the hall, or ducked, or swerved. But someone, in particular, seemed to blank her entirely, or at least dodge her. Wide arcs, circles. This time, she thinks he hasnât noticed. If he had, he might have done a wide arc to avoid her in their office lounge. Marissa thought that the tech in there (some desktops and televisions) might be why he was there. âYou look like youâre rather busy,â she says, âcoming for coffee? Are you on break?â
Flik had just climbed out from under one of the desks to grab his screwdriver so he could open the computer up when he heard a womanâs voice. He turned around and saw Marissa Reed. In his shock he dropped his screwdriver narrowly missing his foot.  âMs. Reed, I um...â he said losing his train of thought and momentarily forgetting what he was going to say or what he was doing in there.  âIâm uh fixing one of the computers. No Iâm not on break right now but if you need something I can put this off.â
Sorry I'm late, I was saving the world. You know how it is.

âI just wanted to make a difference.â
âł Biography:
At a very young age, Flik Anton figured out that he wasnât someone that people understood. While other kids played with trucks and dolls, Flik was using his Lincoln Logs to build extraordinary things. His teachers told him to try to build something normal, his parents told him that heâd never make friends if he didnât blend in, but Flik just couldnât stop being different. After years of perfect grades, social struggles, and floating around the New Jersey Public School System due to bullying, Flikâs parents finally admitted defeat and sent him to Wishing Well High in New York where he could actually be academically challenged. The new school was certainly a step up for Flik. The coursework fit both his level and his interests and he was quickly accepted into the Smarticles clique. Finally, Flik was surrounded by intelligent people that didnât think that being intelligent was a fault. Truthfully, he still felt a little on the outside of the Smarticles - his wild inventions were sometimes a little too out of the box for his peers - but it was a million times better than his previous experience.
A better school life wasnât the only thing Wishing Well brought Flik. He was a sophomore when he first saw her - Atta Reed. Heâd heard her name a thousand times - she was only a freshman but sheâd already made an impression - but seeing her was a different story. For about thirty seconds after she walked into the library, Flikâs entire world seemed to stop and all he could see was this beautiful brunette, surrounded by light. One of his friends snapped him out of it and wished him good luck trying to snag the unattainable Head Fashionista. Flik brushed it off, but his friend was right. The boy spent the next four years trailing after Atta like a lost puppy dog. Heâd make up every excuse to show her his latest invention or ask her about the next big thing for fashion. She never paid him much attention, giving him polite smiles and nods and ushering him along. But it all changed one day. Flik had heard about her break up, the whole school had, and it took everything in him not to go out and punch Daniel Copper - whoâd broken her heart. But, he knew it was a fight he would never win, plus the ordeal completely changed Attaâs attitude towards him. It still wasnât anywhere near flirting or romantically interested, but she stopped ushering him away, she listened to his ideas - even though she often accompanied the listening with an eye roll, and she confided in him.
Flik continued through college at Wishing Well, earning a degree in Computer Science. After graduation, he was quickly offered a job at Fall Technology by fellow former Smarticle, Athena Lampros whoâd remembered his talents. Flik thrived at Fall Tech. He was doing what he loved and Athena even considered and implemented some of his tamer ideas for improvement. While working at Fall Tech, Flik met Jaq Durand, who spent a summer interning for the company. The two got on immediately. Flik had never really had any good friends while growing up. None that stuck in the long run at least. With Jaq, Flik finally felt like someone understood him - even at a basic level. The two remained close even after Jaqâs internship ended and Flik usually turns to him for support and advice.
One day, a technical liaison opportunity opened with Elle Magazine. Flik had known for a while that Fall Tech partnered with Elle to provide them with necessary computer programming and IT support, and honestly heâd been keeping an ear out for jobs there. Athena was more than willing to give him the job, as long as he could keep up with his current responsibilities, and thus, Flik was once again in the presence of Atta Reed. Everything was going well for Flik, until one night he discovered something he shouldnât have. He spent the next three hours digging through computer files and emails and transfer statements and realized that Elleâs former Editor, Marissa Reed, and some of her staff had been embezzling for years in exchange to keep some man called Hopper quiet about something. Flik spent the night compiling evidence, and then he made a big mistake. Flik knew that this information would destroy Atta, so instead of taking it to the police, Flik confronted Hopper himself. Suffice to say, things did not go well. Flik left the âmeetingâ with a black eye and a broken nose, however, he still had his knowledge, and if Hopper wasnât going to stop, Flik would have to take it to the authorities. And thatâs what he was planning to do until he walked into Elle the next morning to find Atta sitting in her office with a bright smile on her face, directed at Hopper himself. For the second time because of Atta, Flik felt his world stop. The message was clear, if he tried to mess with Hopper again, Atta would get hurt - and nothing was worth Atta getting hurt.
