proship please DNI, this is self explanatory. i will also block you if i notice this.
I can’t help but envision Airi as Anya from spy x family (it’s the pink hair & cuteness lol) just with Sukuna’s mean mug and red eye color ❤️ Reading scenes with her is always so adorablee
hehe!!! yes i tend to think of airi as a mix of anya and yachiru from bleach MY DAUGHTERS!! 😭💖 & TYSMMM omg she is my favorite part to write i can’t lie ☺️
Just read the newest chapters of if you really love nothing, and oh my god my heart feels so heavy for both reader and sukuna 😭😭 what a hard situation to be put in (for both of them)
Sukuna in particular really got me when he was thinking about how everybody would look at him with pity if he went to the New Year’s party 😔 Does Yn realize that’s probably why he declined? Or is she thinking something else?
But ugh the idea of him spending yet another day of celebration alone after just finding out about his daughter, and knowing that his brother and child and ex are all together and somewhere else while he’s left alone with his own thoughts? The angst!!
I really hope we get to witness some fluffy moments for Sukuna with Airi in the future 🥹 but ahh I loved these newest chapters!! I can’t wait to see what happens next (is my heart ready for it? Probably not)
PLEASE im so sorry for the angst LMAO 😭 i’m glad it’s translating the way i wished it would though and i am happy ur enjoying reading it ! i hope the next chapter does not disappoint!! 🫶🏼 & YESS i promise there will be plenty of sukuna and airi moments (it’s taking all i have not to just skip to that part of the story) LOL thank you sm for reading !!! 💖
I just realized that I didnt transfer over my authors notes from all the other chapters on ao3 to here... anyways ill start now! sorry about the delayed update, on top of things getting busy for me its also hard to write multiple povs (who wouldve thought) The chapter would've been too long as one, so I figured splitting it in two would be best I had part 1 written when I realized there would need to be a part two which is what took so long!! but anyways like always thank you all soooo much for your support it makes me so happy y'all have no idea!!! <3 VERYYY excited to be writing airi being a pain in sukunas ass because she has just as much attitude as him! currently working on the next chapter!
“Hello?” You answered the call, it was sukuna because of course he always had the worst timing
Sukuna could hear the uncertainty in your voice as if you didnt know who was calling
“Hey” he gruffly responded
Silence hung heavy over the phone, had you not checked to see if the call was still on you would’ve thought he hung up. You wish you could see his face, what was he doing right now? Did he have his brows furrowed the way he used to? when you both talked of something serious.
He wonders the same, if you’re biting your lips or shaking your leg in anticipation. He can imagine it clearly no matter how much has changed
You swallowed the lump stuck in your throat “sukuna?”
Calling his name simply a feeble attempt at getting him to talk, he probably wouldn’t speak you know this yet you tried anyway
“Mommy who is that?” airi asked
Sukuna heard a small voice ask— it was brief and far but he wanted to hear it again, he knew it was airi. He tried to concentrate on it but all he heard was your response
“A friend, baby” you replied calmly “here lets go watch a movie” you moved the phone to your other ear “give me a few minutes” you curtly told sukuna
He wanted to speak, really he did but he didnt know what he’d say, he felt his mouth open to respond and quickly shut again. His heart constricted at the idea that you called him a friend, even if he knows that was just said to appease a 3 and a half year olds mind.
Uncaring for his response— if he even had one, you muted your phone and tossed it on your bed you picked up airi and walked into the living room. Megumi was watching a scary movie while eating some popcorn
You cleared your throat “megumi, im sorry do you think you can watch her for a few minutes”
He turned from where he was sitting to find you looking almost worried he’d wanted to ask what happened, but you probably wouldn’t tell him
“No! Stay with me” airi whined, she clung onto you as you placed her down on the couch
“come on baby you can watch your movie with gumi for a few minutes okay? I’ll be right back” you didn’t know how long the call would take or why sukuna was calling, you’d really prefer if you could deal with him alone for a moment
She was building up to starting a fit but megumi placed the popcorn bowl in her lap and dumped some m&ms in the bowl, airi looked at him in disgust she liked both popcorn and chocolate but separately— she was as sure of this as she could be
“Yuji taught me this one” he softly smiled at airi, and her eyes widened it was instantly more enticing as it was pre-approved by the person who was arguably her favorite at the moment
Airi had her phases or moments where she preferred someones presence more than the other, it depended on the acivity or her mood. It hurts a little sometimes but you also know it’s a normal thing for her to be picky. You smiled at the interaction, while megumi asked airi what she wanted to watch
You quickly made your way back to your room after megumi changed the movie, your hands grabbing at the bottom of your shirt anxiously as you picked your phone back up
Taking a deep breath before unmuting you closed your eyes in acceptance “Why did you call?” You blurted out, but you were met with silence, you could hear him take a deep breath
“Dinner at 5?” He posed the question as if confirming plans you’d never made
You took the phone away from your ear to look at your phone, making sure you heard right “what does that mean?” You were perplexed
He could hear the sound of your disbelief, a prickling feeling crawling up his back— this was hard. He doesn’t understand why this is so hard, theres no way this was proving to be such a challenge.
“Can you do it?” his tone harsh, not meaning for it to come out that way he was just nervous
You rolled your eyes “Today? Thats ridiculously last minute, sukuna” You exclaimed, looking at the clock hanging in your room, 3:15 on the dot
Only receiving a hum in response you continued “I don’t understand, am I meeting you somewhere?”
“I have a place in mind” sukuna said too quietly for his liking, he didn’t really think there’d be a chance that you’d reject him considering he was reaching out, maybe you’d see that he was trying
“I don’t know” you mumbled, you’d hoped he’d be calling to ask about airi, not you, in your mind your dynamic with him has stalled indefinitely until you know what he wants
He could sense your hesitance and he had a feeling he knew why so he continued “can you bring her?”
Your eyes widened, thinking of a response. Your voice would come out unstable you know this, so you wait. You mute yourself, letting out a muttered profanity
You nodded to no one but yourself, trying to get it together, you wanted this right? This is what you’ve been waiting for, for years. Sukuna wanted to meet her, so why do you feel so scared?
“Hello?” Sukunas voice echoed from the phone in your hand, you felt happy but nervous and sad all at once
“Thats fine, we can do 5” you said quietly, but if sukuna could see your face he’d see your apprehensiveness
Sukuna nodded content that you didn’t say no, he feels as if 20 pounds got lifted off his chest, he got past the first part without you rejecting his olive branch. Now he just needed the dinner, that was what he was dreading.
“That all?” You asked, the silence on his end concerned you, was he okay? He was uncharacteristically quiet.
“Yeah” is all sukuna could manage, he opened his mouth to speak again, to say bye or something but you hung up without so much as saying goodbye. Sukuna was confused by your behavior, is this not what you wanted? For him to be present, to care? So why were you giving him the cold shoulder. He hoped it was your nerves and not some moral high horse you’re trying to preserve
————
“We’re going to meet my friend today” You looked into the rearview mirror of your car to see airi looking out the window with excitement, there was still a lot of christmas lights up on peoples houses and buildings, the reflection of them sparkling in her eyes, she always found the lights beautiful.
“I like that one” airi pointed out the window at a specific house that had an all white theme going on, it was rather pretty and you told her as much
You wonder if she heard you and just didnt care, very likely because why would she?
“Are you hungry?” You asked her to which she shrugged
It made you nervous that she might not be the best behaved when it came to food, that innate feeling of disappointing sukuna lurking in the corner of your mind
As you pulled into the parking lot airi drowned out any thoughts you could have while she “sang” along to her favorite songs (it was more like incoherent mumbling half the time with a few words being clear)
You were anxious beyond belief, your hands clammy and your heart beating faster than you’d ever known it to. Years of imagining what this moment would be like, sukunas first time meeting her coming to fruition, you didn’t know what to expect. You’re happy and you keep telling yourself that, this is what you wanted.
With airi in your arms you walked up to the front doors of the restaurant, you placed her down as you approached to pull out your phone, one hand holding tightly onto airis, the other frantically pulling up sukunas contact
“We’re here” you shakily typed the message, you blame the cold for the chill you were feeling but before you could hit send you heard your name
You looked up to lock eyes with sukuna, you chewed on the inside of your cheek at the sight of him he looked… tired. Bags under his eyes that hadn’t been there, hair disheveled, and a slight stubble forming. You wonder if he’d been just as restless as you, because you know you didn’t look any better. He almost looked paranoid, he was wearing a black jacket zipped up with his hands in his pockets, even in the most simple outfits his physique always left you a flustered.
Sukuna had gotten to the restaurant 15 minutes early and had to build up the courage to leave his car… what a strange sentence to relate to himself “building courage” either you had it or you didn’t so why did he try to reason that he was just waiting in his car because it was cold
He saw the moment you and airi had arrived, he couldn’t get a good look at airi but he could see she was bundled up in quite a few jackets. He looked over at the passenger seat at the stuffed rabbit he bought for her, he may or may not have had yuji help him pick it out. To say that yuji was shocked when sukuna recruited him for help was an understatement.
He wonders if she’d think its dumb, he thinks it is, he felt a surge of insecurity in his decisions. He’d always been so self assured, nothing if not aware of his own strengths and yet this small child is making him doubt if he was doing anything right— and he hadnt even met her yet.
He called your name and the sight of you almost made him frown, you looked exhausted with a wistful glint in your eyes, yet somehow so beautiful, he still felt so weak for you and he tries to get it together because thats not the focus here. And he feels it the second he notices his daughter, he stops dead in his tracks.
He was right, she had been suffocated in a big pink puffy jacket with a red sweater underneath and a white scarf. She had pink fluffy earmuffs and pink sparkly boots with fur. He vaguely wonders if thats her favorite color or if you chose that. She hadn’t noticed he was approaching she was too busy looking at you until she followed your line of sight
They locked eyes and sukuna feels his breath hitch. She had a look of confusion on her face her brows slightly furrowed as if trying to understand who he was. She reached out to your leg and slightly hid behind you, he’d be lying if he said that didn’t feel like shit.
You looked down at your daughter and wanted to cringe at her reaction, you don’t blame her though, the man in front of her currently looked like the most unfriendly person on the planet. She didn’t even react to the fact that he had her hair color— one she reacted to so enthusiastically with yuji. You cant blame her exactly it looks like hes never smiled a day in his life and hes abnormally tall and buff, as tall as gojo was his immature nature helped alleviate his intimidating appearance.
“We should go inside its too cold to stand around out here” you murmured, deciding to break the silence and wipe the disgruntled look off of sukunas face
The warmth of the restaurant enveloped your body to your relief, you know airi would be happy to get her jacket off too. It wasn’t anything too fancy but you could tell it wasn’t exactly somewhere toddlers were often at considering airi was the only kid there. The lighting was dim enough that it calmed your nerves and the music wasn’t too loud. You vaguely wondered if this was somewhere sukuna took his dates— you’re not stupid you know he’s moved on. Maybe thats where your unknown agitation for the dinner was coming from, a part of you felt like maybe this was an obligation, something to help his own conscience so he could keep living the way he was.
The hostess led you to your booth styled table and handed you the kids menu, making an off handed comment on how cute your family was, if she noticed how awkward and shifty you and sukuna behaved at that, she didn’t comment. Airi was attached to you like glue as she planted herself right next you, sukuna wasn’t hurt but it was the strangest scene to see both of you right in front of him. He was afraid to speak, feeling that if he did the image in front of him would change, he’d wake up from another dream. It didn’t feel real to be here with you and his kid, he cant tear his eyes away from her.
You notice this and realize he’s trying to accept that airi is actually real, it still hasn’t seemed to click, a look of vacant disbelief. Sukuna simply cant get over how much she looks like him, yeah he saw her pictures but here in person? Its different and guilt sits heavy in chest
As you helped airi take her scarf and jacket off as well as her earmuffs you placed everything in between the both of you. It was not lost on you that airi was unusually quiet she was eyeing the strange man in front of her with a skeptical look on her face
“Airi this is my friend, sukuna” you spoke
Sukuna couldn’t speak, he felt as if he was watching himself from outside of his body, his movements slow as he moved to unzip his jacket revealing a white rabbit plush, tossing the jacket aside. Airi immediately perked up and her expression changed from intimidated to intrigued.
Your eyes widened as you saw what he was holding, you wanted to smile you almost did a part of you screaming at how cute it was. Your mind also somehow short circuiting because this is the first time you’d seen sukuna without a jacket and he’d gotten so much more buff and you feel your face warm up in an embrassing way. Your interest also drawn to how he’d really gotten more tattoos across his arms and around his neck. He was only wearing a simple t-shirt but it made you feel like you had a stupid crush again.
“Uh this is yours” sukuna spoke, how the fuck do you talk to kids?
He moved the plush to the center of the table and airi looked at you then the plush as if asking for your permission
“Its yours” you smiled at her and nodded towards it
She smiled widely before reaching excitedly for the bunny “mommy its so cute!” She exclaimed, sukuna furrows his brows at how quickly her mood changed, thats really all it took? It was similar to yujis mood swings as a kid, maybe he could pull this off? (He thinks thats not likely as he reflects on his current relationship with his brother) So fine, maybe he should be better.
“It is, what do you say?” You urged her
She turned to smile at sukuna “thank you!”
Sukuna tried to hide the way he wanted to smile. She was… adorable and thats not a word he used at pretty much any point. He clenched his fist slightly, unsure of what to say, he really was nervous, why was he so concerned about a toddlers approval?
“Sukuna is yujis brother” you continued
Airi looked around as if searching for yuji, assuming he’d be here if you mentioned him, not fully understanding familial relations, its not like she had a clear idea of it. She wasn’t raised to call megumi her brother nor gojo her father, she knew people had them thanks to her movies but just not really understanding the idea of how they’re actually related
“He helped me pick that out” sukuna mentioned more so talking to you as airi had become distracted with the plush
“Its perfect” you smiled at him, it was your genuine smile, the smile he’d missed so much the one that flashed in his mind every time he closed his eyes to think of you.
He takes in your face, really seeing you without an argument or something to hide. The air between you two is heavy and he can feel how he wants to let himself slip back into the old routine with you. He wants to ask you what you’re going to get and if you want to split it (you usually liked what he got more than what you ordered), he wonders if you still order the same drink you always did.
He watched as you asked airi what she wanted to eat but she was only half paying attention, more distracted with the plush in front of her. Too lost in his thoughts he doesnt hear what airi decides to eat, being pulled further and further into his mind until you cleared your throat. The waitress had apparently come back to the table to ask for your orders, he hadn’t even noticed. He ordered last and the same thing he got last time— he found this place on accident and had yuji with him. It was good enough in his opinion that he’d come back to it, maybe it was good enough that you’d like it too.
With the way sukuna was behaving the idea that maybe he wasn’t sober skates across your mind, he was slow to react and couldn't keep eye contact. Those aren’t sure indicators but still, you'd just never seen him behave so strangely, not calculated in the slightest. You want to ask but decide against it, if you were really concerned you could just leave.
Sukuna unaware of your thought process watches you, moving to open your bag, which he’s now noticing is a little big considering the old bags you used to use. He guesses it makes sense considering you’re carrying stuff for two people now
“You want to color now?” You asked airi to which she nodded, you pulled out a coloring book and some crayons that clearly had been at the hands of a 3 year old. Did she like coloring often? He’s surprised you didn’t pull out an iPad, he’s somehow relieved airi wasn’t an “iPad kid”. He notes the child has gone back to ignoring him, he tells himself it doesn’t bother him because he understands he’s technically a stranger but he was here to meet her so… what now?
As airi flipped through the book he notices that some of the pages were just a massacre of 10 different crayon colors and not a single line was colored in. She lands on a page that has no color yet but the page next to it has the name ‘satoru’ on it and was neatly halfway colored, clearly it was an adults handwriting and coloring, sukuna knows his face twisted in slight disgust at the thought of gojo.
“Want to?” He hears a small voice ask him and he looks to see airi holding out a blue crayon to him, it looks like it’s been to war and back but he chooses not to comment on it. He wants to say no, he’s going to say no because hes a grown man even if this is what parents do he thinks he won’t until his daughter shoves the crayon in his hand
“No I dont-“ but his complaint is cut short as airi shushes him and points to the uncolored page of flowers and a cat sat in the middle. His brows raised as he looked at you, definitely hiding a laugh behind your hand. She just shushed him? Where did that come from? He’d never felt so insulted.
You know you should’ve corrected her, especially because she most definitely picks up the shushing from megumis interactions with gojo but it felt good to see sukuna so helpless. What is he going to do argue with a 3 year old? (You would be proven wrong much to your dismay)
“Here” airi called out to Sukuna when she noticed he still had not moved to color the page she was pointing to. Two of the most stubborn beings you’d known sat in an unspoken duel of who would cave first. You want to laugh because for fucks sake it was just coloring, would it kill him? Probably, knowing how dramatic he was.
Sukuna all but grumbled some words and decided to color on the page she wasn’t pointing at, the one with Gojos dumb ass name, a simple butterfly surrounded by some swirls. Fine, he’ll color but he’ll color where he wants, unknowing that airi takes her book very seriously.
“No!” She half shouted “thats uncle torus” she pouted and snatched the crayon from sukunas hand
“I dont ca-" he was rudely cut off by your foot meeting his shin under the table and before he could complain you turned to airi
“Yes, baby that is uncle torus” you turned to give a pointed look towards sukuna with a stern tone “and thats very nice that you are saving the page for him like he asked”
You know sukuna doesn’t get it, hes just being petty too because its gojo but you really were proud of the way airi was mindful of gojos request. But sure she could’ve been nicer, so you remind her as much
“But remember you can say it nicer next time, okay? We can say ’please don’t color there’”
To which airi pouted and nodded, sukuna watched completely baffled. This was foreign to him, this was something he could not handle— This was parenting? He hadn’t even thought of any of what you said. Every decision he makes being watched as if under a microscope filled him with dread.
“What do you say?” You asked
“Im sorry” airi mumbled and avoided eye contact with the man in front of her, turning her head to look at the other tables
You looked at him, clearly awaiting a response and he didn’t know what to say, he didn’t think it was that big of a deal. And honestly to you it wasn’t really either, you don’t want to police all her actions but when the boys at home let her get away with anything you feel like you have to put your foot down. Airi has to be reminded of manners considering she doesn’t have the most mindful family members between Megumis attitude and satorus childish nature you were left with no choice but to be the bad cop. And with yuji around more encouraging her chaotic side it felt like you were outnumbered and worried that all of this combined would be very influential to an already spoiled only child. You did not want that for her, you wanted her to be mindful.
“S’fine” sukuna grumbled, he noticed his daughter made no motion to pick up the crayon she was holding to continue coloring and it made him feel responsible for it. Even if it was technically because of gojos greedy ass (he thinks) that she got a scolding. He moved to start coloring on the page she asked but she still did not acknowledge him, so he tapped twice on the page with his index finger and she lifted her head to him slightly. Sukuna held out the crayon he was holding to her
“Where do I color” he asked with a monotone voice and you know hes trying but he really could not sound more disinterested
Airis mouth quirked up in a small smile and she grabbed the crayon from his hand “here” she pointed at the flower on the page and started coloring it in for him (the term coloring in used lightly she clearly did not know what the lines were for)
He gently removed the crayon from her hand and kept coloring the flower she told him to and she excitedly grabbed her abandoned crayon and began color the cat orange. She was humming mindlessly for a few moments and sukuna felt a small smile threaten to pull at his lips, he quickly realized that and shook his head slightly.
“Do you like cats?” airi asked, sukuna looked at you before answering as if asking for permission to speak, you shrugged and motioned your hand for him to continue
“No”
Airi looked at him as if he told her the sky wasn’t blue, that clearly wasn’t the answer she wanted, he honestly hadn’t even thought about his response. He’d never particularly wanted pets, too much responsibility and in some sense he felt bad being a pet owner— not that he’s some animal activist but a small part of him hates how domesticated animals have become because of humans, how dependent they are.
“Do you like cats?” Sukuna countered wanting to avoid a follow up question
“Yes!” Airi exclaimed “kitties and bunnies are so cute” she looked up at sukuna to see his reaction
He knows he fucked up with the cats so maybe he could fix it with the rabbits even if he thinks they’re boring “rabbits are… ” he trailed off “cute” he said completely expressionless to which airi scrunched up her nose, he was odd she thought vaguely
“What are those” airi asked pointing at his tattoos
So much for the rabbits comment he thinks, “tattoos” he responded bluntly
She looked at him waiting for an elaboration and then turned to you as if asking to clarify
“Its like coloring but on me and it doesn’t come off” he continued
Airi gasped excitedly and she looked at him “I want them!”
“No” this time you spoke up “they’re for adults only” no playfulness in your voice
Airi pouted and turned towards you “why”
You pondered the response until sukuna spoke up “cause it hurts”
Both you and airi turn to sukuna and he looks at airi face once again expressionless, you wonder if he knows he looks the way he does. Airi pouted once again, she didn’t like things that hurt (her doctors appointments for shots proving to be a prime example) so you’re thankful sukuna said something about pain.
And thankfully before her attitude could worsen the waitress came back with the food right in time to distract your daughter entirely. You wondered if the food was just fast to come out or if the time had flown by that fast.
A strange wave of awareness washed over sukuna as he picked up his fork to dig into his food, he looked up at you and airi and noticed that before you even began to eat you tore up airis chicken tenders to blow on them a bit before she ate them. He’s hungry and he wants to eat but he feels strange like he’s supposed to wait, he doesn’t know why because thats never been a thought for him. So he places his fork down and reaches for the ketchup at the end of he table and places it in front of airis plate. Airi looks at the bottle with a scowl on her face and then up to sukuna, he feels a slight flinch in his reaction because she had never looked more like him than in that moment, he almost feels proud. Almost, if the scowl wasn’t directed at him.
You’re fighting back a smile as he looks at you waiting for you to translate airis reaction for him you looked at him with a playful smugness “she doesn’t like ketchup”
“What kid doesn’t like ketchup” sukuna remarks, really though hes confused. Yuji would eat anything if ketchup was on it
“Yours” you deadpanned as you wiped off the crumbs from your fingers, moving to clear airis coloring book and crayons from the table and back to your bag.
There was a teasing undertone to your words that could’ve fooled sukuna into thinking this was a normal dinner, something you do all the time together.
He didn’t respond, choosing instead to eat now that airi was working on her food. He noted that she took a painfully long time on ONE fry, who takes that long to eat anything? He decides to keep his mouth shut (very hard to do) and appreciates his dish, avoiding looking at you entirely. Sure he could’ve made small talk but he knows you can feel it too, the understanding that this dinner was for airi, the food turns bitter in his mouth and his heart beats a little faster.
You feel the same, you have no appetite and you’re just eating to eat, its an oppressive feeling of anxiety that leaves you lightheaded. Its amazing how out of control you feel in this situation, like when you were a child and you knew you parents were upset with you and there was nothing you could do. Its a terrible emotion to experience at the age you are now, especially as a mother to be reminded that somehow you can still be haunted by those times. Even if its different than when you were a child and it was just your unstable parents being immature, you know you were now an adult who made the decision that upset sukuna, it was merely the notion that you were irremissible in sukunas eyes. That look in his eyes, it wasn’t what you remembered, and instead of the warmth and comfort you felt in his gaze it quickly began to feel like a suffocating inferno of whatever anger he held for you.
He can see you’re clearing thinking of something, in fact you’re kind of thinking quite loud, he opened his mouth to comment until he notices airi staring at what looks to be his forehead (he realizes shes looking at his hair). A glint of what could be considered recollection flashes across the toddlers face and she pokes your arm
“Pink hair” she not so quietly whispered to you
you nod your head and struggle to swallow the food in your mouth, surprised she didn’t say something sooner but it hurt to hear nonetheless
Sukuna had a small smirk as he chewed his food. You glared at him knowing he didn’t do a damn thing and those 9 months were cruel just so she could come out of you looking exactly like him, it did hurt, but whats more insulting is that your genes didn’t even try…
“It was the first thing she said about yuji” you said, you know it was petty but you couldn’t help it
“I had it first” sukuna snapped back grumbling something about how the brat ruins everything
Airis face quickly turned into one of discomfort, like she had eaten something bad, she didn’t like sukunas tone and you noticed immediately. She had shut down and scooted closer to you eating her tenders with her head looking down at her lap, she moved the bunny plush from next to her and put it on the table.
She’s not quite used to brashness such as sukunas, as much as megumi snapped at gojo he tried not to do it in front airi because she didn’t realize it wasn’t directed at her. And the pout and subtle teariness in her eyes made it so hard to reprimand her because It did hurt to have to get stern with her when she did something she wasn’t supposed to. The same look on her face now as sukuna had a disgruntled look on his (more directed at himself) at her reaction to his voice.
You could feel his eyes glaring daggers at you as you picked at your salad and brushed airis hair behind her ear as she ate, putting your fork down you picked up your phone he noticed you began texting and felt insecurity pull at his chest, were you texting gojo? Were you telling him it was going bad? Were you going to leave at airis abrupt change? But his phone pinging startled him out of such thoughts he looked down to see that you’d messaged him
“She doesn’t like people getting angry” your message read and he rolled his eyes
“I wasn’t mad at her” he texted back, he thinks it was clear he was talking to you
“She doesn’t like it either way.”
You locked your phone after that final response and continued to pick at your food, sukuna felt annoyed that nothing he seemed to do pleased the kid. She was temperamental sure, she is a toddler that aspect is subjected to change, yet he wonders why she is that way, yuji barely even flinched at sukunas harsh demeanor as a kid, used to sukunas harsh words by age 7.
Sukuna cleared his throat and shifted uncomfortably he stared at the rabbit plush that had black buttoned eyes and felt like it was judging him, fine he thought
“Yuji says hi” sukuna mumbled
Airi looked up and around the room really thinking that he was going to show up
“He’s not here” to which airi went back to frowning
god this was exhausting he thinks “I can bring him next time” sukuna added as a last ditch attempt
Your heart skipped a little at the ‘next time’ the implication that this wasn’t a one time thing, you also saw that he was trying to cheer her up in his own way
“Come on baby cheer up, finish your food so you can get some dessert” you rubbed her back as she scooted back to her original spot and began to pick at her last tender, she was picky but she does eat what she likes so at least theres that
Sukunas not sure at what point airis mood changed but she started to ramble on and on about (according to you) her favorite movie at the moment, most of it doesn’t make sense at all he’s not even sure what she’s trying to describe because most of the words are incorrectly pronounced or just not known but at least she’s not upset.
Its an out of body experience for you, to see the look of concentration on sukunas face as airi talks, youre not even really paying attention but you know you have a dumb smile on your face. It’s written all over your features that you’re unbelievably happy in this moment, even if your mind is screaming that you were robbed of this for the past few years you try to tell yourself to focus on now, that at least he wanted to be around.
“Dessert?” Sukuna asked more so to you and you didnt even realize him and airi were looking at you for what seemed like permission, which was strange to you
“If airi wants it” you shrugged still not having an appetite, you barely finished your own meal, you know you’d come to regret that in an hour once your nerves calm down.
Sukuna squinted slightly at you as the waitress came to clear the table of the plates “can we see the dessert menu?” You asked with a kind smile, the waitress notes in her mind.
“No problem I’ll be right back with that” she nodded returning your smile and looking briefly at sukuna who appeared to be unhappy
“What now” you muttered towards him, airi was very much distracted by your phone taking blurry pictures of everything, including sukuna
“Are you going to eat?” He asked bluntly, remembering last minute that he couldnt ask with a tone that sounded even remotely upset
“I did” you replied smoothly
“Alright, here’s your dessert menu” the waitress conveniently returned before sukuna could interrogate you more, you hated when he did that
Thanking her as you grabbed it you looked down to see airi recording sukuna, he was checking something on his phone and looked up when he heard airi giggling mischievously. He furrowed his brows in what looked to be upset as he noticed the camera pointed towards him and he heard as airis laugh cut off abruptly towards his reaction
Fuck, he forgot about his face. He wasnt upset, in fact it kinda made him feel like an idiot how he was a little content at the idea that youd have pictures of him on your phone. He also realized he hadnt hear airi laugh, fully laugh the way she did now, so it startled him slightly
You noticed quickly enough and took the phone from her hands and distracted her with the menu “look baby they have your favorite” you pointed to the picture. It was a brownie with ice cream on top, you had made it at home for her a few times because she had it once at a restaurant and fell in love with it
Airi cheered and took the menu from your hands, you don’t know why because she couldn’t read it but she always liked to pretend she did
“Ill delete it later” you clarified speaking to sukuna “asshole” you muttered
“I wasn’t-“ he started defensively
“Not now” you quipped back
Sukuna swallowed his remark choosing to not make it worse
“I like this one” airi shoved the menu into sukunas hand and pointed towards the brownie
“We’ll get that one then” he responded
Airi smiled at him again “thank you!”
He knew you could see that he was left a little speechless, he just nodded in response, still not used to how it seemed that airi could ask him to walk into oncoming traffic and as long as she smiled he would do it. Gruesome comparison he knows but it’s how he imagines such levels of vulnerability. He just met this kid too, he really can’t understand it.
Sukuna knows the night is ending, airi finished her dessert with his help and the waitress bought back his card (he insisted on paying for dinner) You’re starting to look more tired and despite her sugar rush the kid keeps yawning. He knows he’s going to go home to an upset brother and you’re going to take his daughter to a home with that white haired bastard and his brat. He knows you’re happy with them and maybe thats what makes it harder, that as you sat here at dinner with him you probably wished to be back home with them. Such insecure and pathetic thoughts rattled around in his head as he watched you put airis jacket back on.
You cleared your throat as you zipped up her jacket “we should probably head back home”
He nodded quietly, getting up to lead you two out of the restaurant he felt anxious, he didn’t particularly want to say bye, sure he loved his peace and quiet and being able to express himself without making a kid cry but he knew he’d get home and sleep better than he has in months simply because he was with you again. Maybe not how he wants but he saw you, he saw your smile and heard your laugh, he saw a new you someone he wanted to know, if you’d let him— if he let himself. The cold air hits his face in a cruel way as if a literal smack to the face he looks back to see you’ve picked airi up and have her on your hip as airi holds onto the bunny plush for dear life.
“Let me walk you back to your car” sukuna stated-- not suggested, you didn’t even bother arguing it
The walk was quiet save for the scuff of your shoes on the concrete and the sound of your keys unlocking the doors as soon as you got close enough, already having them in your hands before you left the restaurant
“Thank you” you spoke softly, stopping in front of your car
He only nodded again, whats he supposed to say
“Uh, tomorrow’s New Years Eve” you started to which he hummed in response
“Yuji was going to come over, him and megumi wanted to watch some movies, they wanted to match a scene of one of their favorite movies to when it hits midnight” you continued, you noticed sukuna hadn’t looked away from airi since you’d started speaking
“You don’t have to but you can come too” you spat out, your heart was beating so fast you knew he’d say no, you don’t know why you invited him
He couldn’t think of anything worse and he doesn’t know how to tell you that. Not because of you or airi but because the minute he walked through that door he knows he’d be met with pity from everyone there. He knows they’d look at him like he was some sorry bastard who was down on his luck, like he had nowhere to go. He didn’t care what people thought about him but he refused to be pitied— to be at the hands of that filled him with dread
He scratched the back of his head and looked around and you braced yourself for the “no”
“I probably shouldn’t” he mumbled
“I know” you gave him a small smile, as if you had expected it and yet you still asked that stung a bit and he doesn’t know if it would’ve hurt more if you hadn’t invited him at all.
“You’re not gonna tell her?” He asked obviously you knew he was asking
how you hadn’t mentioned he was her father
You gave him a small look of annoyance, you know she should know but you’re still scared plus she probably wont even care and that reaction could do a lot more damage to sukunas pride then there already is
You sighed “airi” you took the plush from her hands and she was ready to complain “that’s sukuna” you pointed towards the man in front of you and she gave you a bored expression still trying to reach for the rabbit plush, she knew that you already told her she clearly thought
“Sukuna is your dad” she stopped reaching for the plush and turned her annoyance towards sukuna she looked at him as he awkwardly shifted
“No” airi replied and went back to reaching for the toy
Sukunas eyes widened and he barked out a laugh, which startled you. It was a humorless laugh more like her answer caught him off guard
“Don’t know what I expected” sukuna remarked, you looked at him an apology swimming in your eyes
“What do you mean baby” hoping maybe you could salvage it
She only shrugged
You didn’t really know what to say, you’d expected an uninterested reaction but this was far worse than that.
“Im sorry” you apologized you felt a tear fall down your face and thats somehow what made him feel bad. A small part of him respected airis answer, he cant blame her even if it was bizarrely blunt
“Its fine” sukuna replied and somehow his voiced almost made you believe him
Airi reached to wipe the tear “no mommy”
“I know baby im fine” you placed a kiss on her cheek “thank you”
Sukuna called your name and you looked at him “Its. Fine.” Its not like you could’ve controlled what airi said, he knows thats not the answer you wanted for him and maybe thats why he’s not that upset about it, you feel upset for him.
“I'll just take the rabbit back” he joked and he forgot that the toddler doesn't understand sarcasm
Airi screamed “NO!” She hugged the plush and looked at him with an anger in her eyes that hes not even sure a toddler should know
He put his hands up in fake surrender “I won’t”
And you sniffled and laughed at him, it was watery and almost sounded pained but it was a laugh nonetheless and he bit his cheek to fight the small smile pulling at his lips
“I’ll get you a bigger one” he told airi when he noticed airi was the only one not happy at all
To that she smiled and nodded yes enthusiastically
“She already has so many toys” you mumbled, your back aged 30 years just going around picking them up
Sukuna shrugged
“We seriously have to go, its getting late” you softly smiled at him, he felt him stuff his hands in his pockets grasping his phone, he wanted to take a picture. Airi was picking at the rabbits eye and you were looking up at him with such soft eyes he didn’t want you to leave.
“Ill see you soon” he replied and you nodded
Moving to the back seats door of the car you opened it and sukuna followed as he held the door open so it wouldn’t hit you as you buckled airi into her carseat. You could feel sukuna watching your every move, you swallowed your nerves
“Say bye airi”
“Bye kuna!” She smiled and waved and you felt your heart stop
His old nickname hit your ears in such a sorrowful way, you hadn’t even thought of it in years, you know its cause she cant pronounce his name fully but it made the smile fall from your face
Sukuna wasn’t in a better shape, he too hadn’t heard that name in years and he only ever heard it leave your lips in your voice. He felt a pang in his chest, like his heart threatened to stop. He couldn’t speak and whatever composure he had held throughout the evening crumbled, he nodded yes repeatedly avoiding eye contact
“Bye airi” he replied back and backed away from the door
You quickly shut it before she said anything else to make it worse
“Bye sukuna” you spoke as you walked around to the drivers side, he was following slowly behind
You turned to look at him and he did nothing but lift his hand in a lazy wave
He had a look in his eyes, like he’d seen a ghost and you cant blame him
It hurt you to get into your car and watch him slowly walk back to his own, the heater warming up yours, airi was telling you something, youre not sure what because all you could focus on was him.
Maybe you should’ve hugged him, maybe you should’ve said something but you know better than anyone that the name airi used dredged up memories that neither of you wanted to deal with. Not right now.
“Mommy!” Airi shouted, realizing you hadnt been hearing her
“Yes baby” you replied, almost robotically
“kunas scary”
“He can be nice” you replied voice cracking as you watch him open his car door, you don’t know why it kills you to see him alone like that
“Mmmmmm” airi hummed "no"
“Lets go home” you changed the subject not really in the mood to argue it, you wiped your eyes and pulled out of the parking space
He remembers the day you asked that unanswered question, he’d simply replied ‘what about them?’ Before getting interrupted by your phone ringing, your co-worker asking if you could cover her shift and he’d never been more thankful for someone interrupting his time with you because that was the most terrifying question you could ask. He knows you knew that, which is why you never had the nerve to ask before.
It was a polarizing thought, he’d never particularly cared for the idea of having kids in fact if he really thought about it he detested it, he couldn’t imagine being around an ill mannered bratty kid that had no intellect-- he’d already dealt with yuji. Yet the mere lilt of your voice when you asked and the look in your eyes made whatever resolve he had melt, he remembers the way his eyes slightly widened in shock at the way that if the conversation continued he would’ve said yes to you. He would’ve said yes to anything you ask— only you. He didn’t want kids no but if it was with you? He thinks he understands why it’s something couples would aim for. He never considered himself one for such banal and mawkish thoughts in nature— this behavior was simply unbecoming of him.
Thinking his biggest threat would’ve been gojo when it was in fact himself. It’d been 2 days since he’d confronted you. The past two nights he barely slept, his dreams plagued with memories of you, moments he’d lived with you almost like watching an old home video. Yet, instead of the memories playing out in the way he remembers, it would end with you spewing out the words ‘im pregnant’ and then the memory switches as if someone changed the channel on a tv. It becomes too much and it feels like a merciless onslaught of his inescapable guilt— even in dreams he can’t get away from the fact that you had tried and he had failed you in that aspect. So his pathetic attempts at a good nights sleep were quickly laid to rest, instead opting to just count on caffeine and spite to function.
It was christmas today, he didn’t have work and he noticed as he sat on the living room couch, for the first time in years he was alone. After he’d broken up with you he’d gone back home and spent the holiday with yuji and his grandfather, not that it’d ever be anything important. It was barely a holiday in his eyes, in yujis eyes too probably. He’d merely drop by maybe grace them with presents (money) and eat whatever food was made.
The living room filled with a silence that swallowed him whole. He could feel the way it wrapped around him, he hadn’t even turned on the lights— no curtains open, he just sat in the dark cradled by the mind numbing solitude created from the consequences of his own actions. Instead of using this time to reflect he couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of anger pour over him.
Sukuna had barely seen yuji— the brat skillfully avoiding him (not that sukuna wanted to speak with him) but it was the idea that yuji was treating him like the bad guy.
Sukuna didn’t even have to check to know yuji was with you, and it made him seethe. Yuji hadn’t even bothered to ask or tell him that he wouldn’t be home. What was so great about being with you and gojo anyways? Yeah, the fushiguro kid was there but surely that wasn’t the only reason his brother was practically living with you. He thinks maybe its airi? The name still rattles around his head in a foreign way.
He still hasn’t wrapped his head around the fact that he has a daughter and maybe it makes it easier that he hasn’t seen her— that he knows nothing aside from her birthday and name. It’s easy to separate her from his life now and the weight of her importance. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t curious, he wanted to know what she looked like at the very least, surely you’d posted some pictures. Maybe that would be his attempt at getting his foot in the door. Sure it’d cost his pride but at this point did he even have anything left? He left it on the doorstep of your home the moment you closed the door in his face, the echoes of your hollow laugh ringing in his ears.
“Fuck it” he mumbles to no one but himself as he opens up his phone, navigating his way to your social media profile he’d unblocked weeks ago. He notes that now it shows that yuji follows you— not that hes surprised.
It was still private and before he could really think twice about whether it was a bad idea he requested, even if he regretted it he couldn’t un-request— you’d get the notification anyways. He sat anxiously for what felt like hours (but was merely 45 minutes) waiting for you to accept— you finally did but you didn’t follow him back. He’s not sure why he expected you would maybe because he hoped you’d have been just as desperate as him even if he didn’t have any posts— you’d still be nosy, right? He was dead wrong but he refused to linger on the thought for too long not when he’d been given a small glimpse into the life you’ve built without-- in spite of him.
The most recent picture is two hideous drawings he assumes his kid and some other talentless bum (probably gojo) drew but as he reads your caption he chokes back a laugh much to his dismay.
“airi and yuji’s submissions to the louvre” you’d tagged yuji in the picture and he commented that his didn’t look nearly as good airis. Sukuna thinks yuji should have some shame for having the art skills of an elementary aged student but thats neither here nor there. The humor and lightheartedness of you and yujis interaction brought him back down to earth, back to the position he was in.
The post after that is what makes sukunas heart sink to the pit of his stomach. He’d felt an uncomfortable feeling of… sadness? guilt? He didn’t know what he felt other than his heart clenching at the image in front of him. It seemed to be an older picture of you— pregnant, sleeping with your head on gojos shoulder. Gojo had taken a selfie from a higher angle so it was clear to see you were pregnant, the white haired idiot was smiling throwing up a peace sign as you remained blissfully unaware. Before the feeling of seeing you pregnant can even settle in his conscience he notices theres another picture to swipe to.
He doesn’t really process it.
He can’t recognize the emotion he feels in this exact moment.
A small child, with shoulder length pink hair laid her head on gojos arm, not tall enough to reach his shoulder, asleep quite similar to the pose in the picture of you and gojo. While gojo made the same exact face, sukuna swore if he’d eaten anything it surely would’ve risen up into his throat.
Jealousy, pure unadulterated jealousy seeps through every bone of his body but even more than that he feels heartbroken. Different than the state he was left in after he’d broken up with you— this was a pain he couldn’t place. It didn’t have a category in his mind he could rationalize it with, no past experience, no similar moments... nothing.
It took him quite a while to tear his eyes away from the image, still not thinking its real, to read your caption under the post
“happy birthday toru, we love you <3”
Yeah, that was the nail in the coffin for him he thinks, he doesn’t even want to open the comments. He doesn’t even want to accept the caption, he knows and understands he’s in no position to blame you for getting closer to gojo. He knows he led you to that but that doesn’t make reading it any easier.
He didn’t think he’d ever envied gojo as much as he did now, gojo had you something sukuna himself didn’t have. Gojo had airi, someone sukuna didn’t even know. The white haired idiot had simple moments like that— the ones that sukuna could never really imagine for himself anymore… not after the break up. The memories of it lingered in his mind anyways like the way whiskey lingers on your tongue.
He knows he’d follow you around your apartment, just to see you, just to hear you. How he’d have to hold you when he’d fall asleep at night just to feel the rhythm of your breathing to help lull him to sleep.
He liked to cook— it was something he found calming and he knows he was good at it but none of it mattered until he had your approval until he made you try the first bite and the gleam in your eyes as you looked back up at him had him making more each time. Anything to keep that look on your face, as if he’d held your entire world in his palms.
He needed to hear you humming to yourself as you did miscellaneous tasks— painting your nails or begging to pluck his eyebrows to ‘clean them up’ and he’d always pretend to hate it but there was nothing he desired more than to hear you humming above him as you straddled his lap at just the right angle to tilt his head slightly back as you plucked out the unruly hairs.
You’d always unknowingly pouted when they’d give you the toppings you don’t like on your burger, asking him with pleading eyes if he’d eat them. He’d always say yes, even if it didn’t go with what he ordered.
Yes, yes, yes. Over and over and over again he’d say it a million times in his mind no matter how much he’d deny it to you or told you no he knows without a doubt he did anything you asked. You knew that too after a certain point, that his terse “no’s” after you’d asked him for a favor always meant yes, you always found it funny how he couldn’t just say yes to begin with.
Sukunas thoughts come to a halt as he moves onto the next post and is met with his own eyes staring back at him.
Her eyes were red— he didn’t get a chance to see that in the picture where she was asleep, but they were his eyes, her hair really was his exact shade of pink, she even had his nose but her smile— she had your smile.
But everything about airi was him. He felt sick— actually nauseous.
It’s a picture of airi smiling wide holding a book with a white rabbit on it, her hair is down but she has two pink bunny shaped hair clips in her hair on each side of her head, she’s wearing a pink hoodie that has a small white rabbits on it. He thinks is this what parents usually feel? An overwhelming sense of protectiveness? He’d be lying if he said he didn’t feel a shift in his objectiveness. She finally had a face to her name and he feels whatever poor strings of apathy snap.
“airi is better off without you” yujis words played in his mind as he read the caption for the post
“airis current obsession is bunnies if you can’t tell”
Rabbits? Sukuna scrunches his nose. What did they even do? As far as he knows they don’t even make noise— you cant even take them for walks. What is so appealing about them? Do kids really find such mundane and weak things interesting? But he finds that he wont be able to say that to airis face (like any reasonable adult)
He nearly laughs at how strange his thoughts are so vulnerable for a being he’s never even met— who hasn’t even been on this earth for 5 years. He feels his sanity grasping at straws. Sukuna can’t prove you right, he can’t be who you think he is, who you hid airi from. His pride would simply not allow that, he needed to prove you wrong— an even bigger part of him wants to make you regret even thinking so lowly of him.
But the idea of parenting is something beyond him. He thinks back to yujis toddler years with a grimace on his face, the kid was a handful… he still is. This is a door he can’t open and not enter. If he does this theres really no going back. He’s not even sure whats holding him back, its not like he’s living a life where he’d have anything to lose. He’s already lived the single life, he’s done the whole “carefree” thing and nearly the entire time he was miserable because he didn’t have you. Maybe its the idea that you’d hold it over his head if he came back around, maybe its that you’d be right somehow in the end, if he’d come crawling back to you it’d be you winning. Or if It ended up being too much for him the whole notion of ‘fatherhood’ and he chickens out. Either way you read him like a book and it made him sick.
What is the first step in parenting anyways? It’s not like he had any amazing examples in his life and its not like its something he studied. Sure, the pictures of airi may have chipped away at his selfish attempts at living freely but what is he supposed to do after that? She probably cant even hold a conversation its not like he’d be able to talk to her. And everyone must be out of their goddamned minds if they think he’s gonna stoop so low as to baby her, he surely wasn’t going to color or draw pictures with her like yuji did, it’s just not who he is, right?
Sukuna turned off his phone as the image of his daughter burned into his eyes, a small petty part of him feels some sort of satisfaction that she looks so much like him. It must’ve sucked for you, to see him every time you look at airi— he tells himself its the smallest win he’ll take. He threw his head back onto the couch staring at the barely visible ceiling. He hasn’t looked at the time, the past two days he’s been on autopilot, time being something that no longer had meaning as he knew no matter how much of it he had— it wouldn’t make him any less scared.
Scared?
Had he really just admitted that? He snaps his head up and rubs his face, that couldn’t be it. Not even when that asphyxiating feeling of failure filled his brain— the way smoke filled a house on fire. With no way out, consuming everything in its reach, ruining whatever he had left to cling to. His face felt hot as he realized he was fighting back tears, he can’t even remember the last time he cried, there was a stinging feeling building up in his dry eyes. Dry from the lack of sleep— he knew that, and yet the sting felt personal, like it came from the fact that everything he has known and lived by is slowly incinerated by airis existence.
If he accepts her, if he accepts that he’s a father, he will no longer know himself. He will no longer know the person he’s been, he’s built. Everything he did on his own without help from his useless parents.
If he accepts her, he has to be what he didn’t have— what he didn’t know. Its been easy to avoid the memory of his parents and his childhood— living life as a less than perfect brother and grandson. Its been effortless to go through the motions of his life with the rules and morals hes set for himself without having another being dependent on him.
If he accepts airi, he rejects himself.
And somehow if he rejects airi, he still rejects himself— the version of him that he swore he’d never be. He’d never be jin or kaori, thats what he’d told himself long ago.
His ideologies being compromised by such a small human life. A raging war between his mind and soul brought about by his own progeny.
Something only possible because of you— it was always going to be you.
-----
Your living room was filled with an oppresive silence as airi, gojo and megumis voices were muffled in the next room over. The three of them were in the kitchen attempting to make “dessert”, you wanted to smile as you heard megumi reading all the instructions while gojo and airi massacred whatever the recipe was supposed to be
“2 cups of flour” megumi deadpanned and instead of a response all you heard was airi squealing with laughter
“Oops” gojo said seconds after
Megumi did not necessarily want to watch gojo and airi pour more than 2 cups of flour into a bowl, and laugh it off as if it wouldn’t make the dish inedible but he knew you and yuji needed to talk, and free of distractions— the distraction in question being the three year old with endless energy.
He didn’t mind too much because the more megumi thought about it he did feel a sense of sorrow for yuji. Megumi knew his father, he remembered him albeit all of it a little fuzzy but even when he was alive Toji wasn’t the most present, work paired with never getting over the death of his wife— these were things megumi knew all too well about his father. So when he passed away, megumi didn’t know who to grieve, its not as though he was an amazing father that was meant to be grieved in such a sense yet megumi could remember the rare moments where he knew toji cared in his own capacity.
So when gojo adopted him and you came into the picture not too long after, he didnt think he could see you guys as parents especially considering how young you both were. He thinks adults are supposed to know what they’re doing as he recalls the times gojo burned their breakfast or would argue with him over board games and which board piece they would use.
You also had a playful dynamic with gojo that helped feed this sense of immaturity that megumi saw in the both of you. He didn’t necessarily view it as a bad thing but it helped frame what box he placed you guys in, much more akin to older siblings than parental figures. He knows in a sense the three of you grew up together, and it was bittersweet to look back on.
Looking at yuji, megumi has never been so thankful for his life now. No matter his bickering with gojo or your occasional prying of megumis emotions, he knew he could turn to the both of you for anything. Even if he might not want to admit he’d need help at any point, you and gojo showed nothing but endless bounds of support and care— Megumi quickly realized yuji didn’t have that.
Sukuna is clearly a mess if megumi could judge (and he did) he wasn’t exactly a “good” brother in traditional senses. Sukuna clearly did care for yuji just not in a way he needed. In a sense megumi understood how with the help of airis existence, yuji could turn to you in moments where he needed emotional support. As if he’d found a place of comfort within the walls of your home— your found family, yuji felt as if he belonged.
All of this to say he’s glad you still let yuji come over, even if it wasn’t easy for you. He knows the past two days have been a lot and he didn’t know how to help other than maybe spend more time with airi so she wouldn’t go to you. You clearly tried to act fine for airi but to Megumi and gojo it was clear your entire demeanor changed. The kindness in your smile when you talked with airi, the tone in your voice, and the patience you’d had were dulled enough that megumi wondered if airi realized too— that you were different. It was only two days but they felt so long and bleak when you held such impact with your presence, yet he couldn’t blame you because who would expect you to be okay?
And he cant even imagine what it was like for yuji having to deal with sukuna on top of his own emotions. It felt awkward to pry beyond a ‘you okay? ’and despite the fact that this is his home and you are family in this moment he cant help but feel like a spectator— he wonders if this is what yuji feels.
————
The past two days you’ve tried so hard not to sulk in your self deprecating thoughts, at the end of the day you knew it’d come down to this. The moment you’d decided not to tell him anything even after seeing him in person, you’d accepted this would be the outcome. You know you shouldn’t feel bad for yourself— for a situation you put yourself in but you can only rationalize so much. You don’t even think you're hurt about why Sukuna’s upset all the comments he’d thrown at you, you’re more hurt at the idea that he’s upset with you at all (no matter how immature that sounds because why wouldn’t he be upset) it just wasn’t something you were used to. You knew you were different than everyone else to him— you don’t know why the smallest part of you expected that now.
Every hour, minute and second ever since the night he found out has been dragging on as if you were stuck in an endless loop. You don’t know where you stand with sukuna anymore, you’d long since accepted he didn’t love you anymore— it took you a year after your break up to accept it. The night he came back had given you a small sense of hope that somehow he was going to stay
That he still loved you
That he wanted to be with you
That he regretted it
You awoke to the jarring reality that you’d never see him again. Crushing whatever small insignificant hope you’d held onto.
You resigned yourself to the restlessness your heart felt. Even if your days were busy, even if you were in pain from your pregnancy, even if you had Megumi and gojo to distract you— when the sun set, you could only do so much to stop the thoughts that raced around in your head. Your dreams plagued with him, you’d come to dread the nighttime.
And then your baby was born, and somehow every thought of him dissipated the moment you’d held her. Her warmth as you held her, hearing her finally cry after you struggled with your labor— you don’t think you’ve ever known a love like this. But that momentary bliss after your birth had burst when reality came crashing down again. You didn’t love airi any less— not in the slightest its just that moment made it so easy to forget him, it was just you and airi. The 9 months you’d carried her, all for that serene peace you’d never experience again— the peace that despite the pain and exhaustion, it was irreplaceable.
The months and years went by and you couldn’t look at her without seeing sukuna, and how for every milestone and all the restless nights of her newborn phase you’d wished he had been there. Her first steps, first words, her teeth finally growing in. All those moments you’d try to capture every second of, wanting more than anything to have him to share it with always thinking that maybe you could show him one day.
An eternal feeling of guilt gnawing at the back of your mind even in your happiest moments, it took its toll on you. So in some weird twisted way— even if sukuna chooses to never be around at least he knows and what happens next is in his hands.
Even now as you sat across from yuji, a relentless headache taking over your senses, a sharp stabbing pain in your temples and a throbbing pulse behind your eyes— it was exhausting. You were immensely grateful for gojo and megumi as they took every opportunity to lighten your load when it came to airi. You knew that being a parent meant no breaks, you understood that and tried to tell yourself that, but you just weren’t present. Whenever airis gaze would find you all you could see was her fathers eyes that you couldn’t bare to be in the line of sight of.
No matter how much you think you’ve changed and how much of a person you’ve become outside of sukuna, somehow everything always traces back to him, you mull over this as yuji sits on the couch next to you. You’re glad he still wanted to come, you told Megumi to make sure to let yuji know he was still welcome— a part of you knew he’d say yes, you don’t think yuji would miss an opportunity to be away from sukuna.
The moment yuji arrived he apologized profusely to you for not being able to give a heads up about sukuna, that he wasn’t the one that told his brother about airi, and that he tried to stop him. You reassured him as kindly as you could— no part of you wanted yuji to feel responsible for the turn of events that occurred. It was a mess he didn’t need on his plate, he was just a kid and you hoped that sukuna understood that too.
Now as you sat in the all too silent room trying to think of how to open up the conversation you could see the slight anxiousness written on yujis face.
“Is everything….” You struggled to finish the sentence because you knew the answer so asking if everything was ‘okay’ seemed futile
Yuji shrugged answering your unfinished question “I’ve been avoiding him”
You slowly nodded with a solemn look, which yuji noticed
“We kind of got into an argument when we got back home but its not just that— im really disappointed in him”
You feel the urge to take some blame it wasn’t just sukuna and you didn’t want yuji to feel that for his brother— if you could ease that you would try
“Im sorry yuji, I wish I would’ve handled it differently, I know that now and-“ you stopped talking as you watched yuji fervently shake his head
“Its not that” yuji mumbled, he cleared his throat before continuing the look on his face written in uncertainty as if he didn’t think he should say more “I had a feeling for a while… longer than I cared to admit that my grandfather was lying to me about my parents— but I didn’t want to think about it too long”
Your brows furrowed, as far as you could recall yuji said his parents had passed away, before that you knew very little about sukunas family situation he never talked about it and you quickly stopped trying to pry as you realized your persistence meant nothing.
“Sukuna told me that night, that my dad is still alive”
Your eyes widened, not missing the way yujis voice wavered
“My grandfather lied and said he died, I guess to make it easier” yuji sighed out as he ran his hand through his hair anxiously “y’know sukuna hates our dad”
You nodded your head slightly and you blinked away the tears that threatened to make their presence known, you heart ached at the idea that this is something yuji barely discovered but that this is something sukuna was sitting on and never shared, a version of him you didn’t know.
“I knew he didn’t like talking about them, but how evasive he got about the topic made me think it was rooted in some sort of anger” you mumbled “I tried to learn more but” you trailed off with a shrug
“He hates them both but I guess our dad a little more since he’s off being a deadbeat somewhere” yuji clarified
You nodded in understanding waiting for yuji to continue
“Long story short I compared him to our dad and I don’t think that sat well with him” yuji murmured
You let the silence hang heavy between the two of you for a moment, you cant imagine how hard that was for yuji to find out but even worse what sukuna must’ve felt to hear that. Even after everything theres always voice in the back of your mind that tells you to care about him, no matter how much you know he doesnt deserve it.
“Im so sorry yuji, I hope… you’re okay” you didnt know what to say in all honesty
“I don’t want that for airi” yuji spoke up with a hint of realization in his voice
You remained silent not entirely sure what he meant
“She deserves better than that so if my brother decides to not be in the picture… please don’t think I wish to be absent too”
You're speechless you’re not really sure what you expected but for yuji to so clearly draw a line between him and his brother, you hope for yujis sake sukuna gets his shit together.
“She should know that not everyone related to her dad sucks” yuji mumbled
You could hear the insecurity in his voice, as if he’s trying to convince himself of that, but you can understand his sentiment, in a way hes right. Worst case scenario is that sukuna really does choose to be a deadbeat, its easy for a child to blame themself for not being enough for the parent to stay and in turn they start to resent the blood relation to said parent, even if it isn’t inherently bad.
So maybe just maybe with yuji around she can see that her fathers side isn’t completely hopeless— you know he’d be an amazing uncle too. All of this of course being worst case scenario.
“You’re a great kid yuji” you reassured him “you’re not just your blood, I hope you know that”
Yuji looked at you with uncertainty
“I mean it!” You smiled “sure you’ll have some characteristics, some genetics” gesturing to his hair “but you’re still you’re own person outside of that, especially when you’re trying so hard to be different— to be better than what you know”
Beats of silence filled the space before you continued “and you know you’re always welcome” you know you’ve told him so many times before but you cant blame how doubtful he feels about it
You looked to yuji to find that he was staring straightforward with a glint of tears in his eyes, you wouldn’t comment on it though. Yuji fiddled with his fingers as he just nodded, as if the nodding would stop the tears from leaving his eyes
“I think he just needs time” you whispered “I cant blame him… its a lot and no matter how much I wish that he’d be more eager or that I handled it better, this is who he is” you shrugged “still sucks though” you added with a humorous tone
Yuji huffed out a laugh “tell me about it”
You opened your mouth to speak again but you were interrupted by a shrill laugh coming from airi and the sound of glass breaking
“Gojo” was all you could hear megumi say in a reprimanding tone
you and yuji snapped your heads to the direction of the kitchen then back at each other bursting out laughing
“I better go check on that” you said after calming down “are you okay though?”
Yuji nodded, feeling more at peace than when he arrived but the idea that at the end of the day it was all up to his brother left him feeling a sadness he couldn't shake
-----
You and gojo were sat on the living room floor building airis kitchen set (he was building you were reading the instructions) while airi watched her current favorite movie. The boys retired to megumis room to set up the new console as well as his headset, he looked as enthusiastic as he could get which means gojo had done good this year. Of course yuji got his gifts too, 2 new sweatshirts from some brand he really likes as well as some gift cards for a game him and megumi play, something about forts at night (you have no idea) you felt as if parenting aged you by 20 years, pop culture very quickly becoming unfamiliar as it was it easy to get lost in what your daughter most appealed to. Your life was no longer just what you liked, you had to adopt whatever interest airi had in the moment— no matter how many times the movie, show or song was repeated.
“You holding up okay?” Gojo asked quietly, noticing you’d been relatively quiet most of the night
You hummed “sukuna requested to follow me”
Gojo shot you a surprised look “when was this?”
“Earlier, when the kids were opening the gifts I didn’t want to say anything”
You were taking pictures of airi and her new toys when you got the notification, heart stuttering as you read it. A sense of sadness washed over you, the idea that he’d being seeing airi for the first time and it wasn’t even in person. You obviously had pictures of her up as well as pictures with gojo and megumi, family pictures were almost your entire feed. You doubt sukuna would take that well, but its also not his place to judge he hasn’t been there and you have to remind yourself of that when guilt threatens to swallow you whole. It feels as if you’ve gotten caught stealing something, the idea that he’s watching and you can almost see the look of disapproval in his eyes.
“Did you let him follow?”
You sighed “yes… only because I think he’s trying to find out more about her” you threw your head in airis direction as she sat distracted on the couch engrossed in the movie while brushing her new dolls hair “I don’t want to stop him from that”
“Makes sense” gojo spoke “did you follow him?”
“No, why would I?” You said dryly
“I don’t know, I just figured you would” gojo shrugged
You can understand how maybe past you would’ve wanted that, to know everything he’s been up to but now you can’t bring yourself to care. Not when you had much bigger things on your plate, you didn’t want to see the life he was choosing to live over his daughter, as petty as that sounded.
“A shame, I wanted to be nosey” gojo joked trying to lighten the mood
“Trust me i know you would” you mirrored his tone
Gojo thinks he could say he knows you better than anyone, sukuna included. Sukuna knew the past you, one that so very little of remains… you didn’t change in any negative way, you’ve just matured. Gojo likes to think he’s matured alongside with you, you’ve both navigated the preteen years of megumi (the most feared phase in gojos opinion). Airi was also something you’d learned to navigate together and maybe a small part in the back of his mind was scared that if sukuna came into the picture, it’d be easy for you and airi to forget about him. Even if thats absurd and simply not true, especially considering gojo isn’t in any place to feel that way, at least thats what he keeps telling himself. In many ways he knows everything he’s done and just from how much he loves your daughter, he could qualify as a stepparent. He knows he said he didn’t want that title, he still doesn’t want it, he knows it isn’t something you’d want either but its hard to pretend like a parental sense of care for airi wasn’t formed on gojos end.
Sure, he could be the uncle that spoils her or riles her up he didn’t hate that at all but maybe because so much of his life has been focused on you and airi for the past few years the idea that it could change at sukunas behest makes gojo more anxious than it should. Gojo wouldn’t come to regret everything he’s done but he would come to fear that he’d lose the family hes gained. It wasn’t traditional by any means but it was all he had and something he’s worked so hard to nourish.
Thats how he knows you were hurting more than you let on, usually the mood in the house flows around you, you don’t even know it but to him and the kids they’re just lucky enough to be in your presence. They subconsciously turn to you, like you always have the answer even when they know it. He doesn’t mean that you do everything for them and they never lift a finger, but more so to know you was to be loved. You had such a way of loving those you cared about, that it made people want to be better, to be what you thought of them. So when your mood isn’t what it usually is he finds every way possible to cheer you up, but in times like these where virtually nothing could help he’s left grasping at straws. It invokes this complex in him that he’s not enough to be there for the people he cares about most, a feeling he’s all too familiar with.
He knows your conscience is eating you alive, you keep thanking him and telling him that you dont say it enough (you do, he has since lost count) and in the back of his mind he knows your thanking him as a replacement for an apology because you know he wont accept one from you. There is nothing to apologize for in gojos eyes, everything he has done has been because he wanted to, and no matter how many times he reiterates this, you don’t accept it.
“Do you think he’ll reach out?” You voice appeared faintly in gojos mind as his thoughts were racing, he hadn’t realized you asked him a question
“I can’t say but” his voice trailed off trying to find the right wording “if he does, its better if he sorts it out whatever he’s feeling first”
You threw him a curious look, interested to know what he made him think that
“C’mon we’ve known the guy for ages, that look in his eye the night he came was something I’d never seen before” gojos voiced sounded almost stern “that kind of look wont go away overnight”
Gojo didn't want airi to be looked at with such anger, he didn't want you to be looked at that way either but he knows that in some sense sukuna would think he was entitled to that anger.
But airi didn’t deserve that at all, in any sense. You knew gojos words were true, as much as it shattered you.
————
2 days turns into 5 and it’s almost been a week. Tomorrow was New Years eve and the new year was looking more and more bleak in your humble opinion. Starting out January like this wasnt something you particularly desired but if that was how it was until sukuna decided to speak then so be it.
You try to go about your days normally but you’re nearly jumping at any notification your phone gets, thinking at any moment it could be him. Airi becomes more clingy as she realizes you’re distracted, she doesn’t know by what but she certainly knows that whenever she rants in what she believes is full cohesive sentences (but whats most definitely a lot of toddler nonsense) she has to repeat what she said because you didn’t hear it the first time.
So she increases how much she follows you around the house, and even when megumi and gojo tried to distract her it wasn’t enough anymore. Sure, gojo was funny and megumi was patient but when she noticed that the second either one of them sat down to play with her, you’d leave the room or go quiet, she began to search you out.
It’s strange how it only took a few days for her to notice your strange behavior, in all honesty you thought all the attention everyone was giving her would’ve been enough.
And today was one of those days Airi trailed behind you as you enter your room
“what’re you doing?” She asked excitedly
“Im gonna look at some old pictures” you responded
“Mmmmm can I see?”
“Sure you can” you smiled as you picked her up, placing her on your bed, she began to look around your room as if looking for something, as if she hadn't been in here hundreds of times before. You watched her for a moment, intrigued by her behavior before grabbing the book from your closet and sat down next to her.
It wasn’t much just a simple black scrapbook with a few stickers on it, years ago you’d insisted on having physical pictures to look through especially of airis toddler years.
You were sure she’d lose interest after the 5th picture but she just kept asking “who’s that” every time you pulled out a new photo, even if it was clear who it was. They were old pictures of you and your friends in high school a couple of candid pictures of you and gojo, a ton of you and Shoko (you missed her so much and you try not to think about how proud but sad you are that she’s a successful doctor in a whole other city) and quite a few of you and geto.
Airi giggled when she saw a picture of you wearing gojos old sunglasses and gojo trying to take them off your face
“toru?” She asked as she pointed at the guy with white hair, she was finally recognizing he was the only one who looked like that
“Mhm he was megumis age here” you replied
She nodded but you’re not too sure she understood that concept of age, she understood a birthday because of the gifts but really thats the only indication of age in her mind, plus she only knew it existed when you told her about it
Your smile dropped as you moved onto the next picture, you thought you had put it in the box of sukunas things he’d forgotten. You’d never gotten rid of, just in case airi were to ever become curious (is what you told yourself). The box remained unopened for years in the garage, you refused to acknowledge it so the picture in your hands was like getting a bucket of ice cold water dumped on you.
“Who is that” airi asked as she pointed at the man in the picture
You looked at the picture of you and sukuna on the day you both graduated from high school, you had a look of shock on your face as you looked up at him, you can still hear him and his question so clearly.
You didnt know what to tell her and your mouth felt dry and your eyes stung a bit, after a few seconds she asks the question again
“Thats my old friend” you replied, in a saddened tone Airi looked at you as she heard how you didn’t sound as excited as you did with the other pictures, but you moved on quickly. You distracted her with a younger picture of megumi holding her a few days after she was born
“Thats you and megumi” you pointed at the baby
“Thats me?” She asked happily
“It is” you giggled as you admired her smile
The moment was ruined as your phone started ringing, reading the caller ID your smile left as quickly as it came
chapter 14 of If You Really Love Nothing is currently in progress and I hope to have it uploaded by this weekend! But ill have more accurate updates on my twitter (:
Sukuna mumbled your name so quietly, it was enough for yuji to hold his breath as he waited for sukuna to continue “does she have a kid?”
Yujis eyes widened and he subconsciously took a few steps backwards, his heart was beating so fast he swears you’d be able to hear it thudding. How sukuna found this out was still a complete mystery, yuji swallowed slowly trying to think of words to say but this was not his conversation to have. Did sukuna talk to you? Or Gojo? Yuji genuinely had no words, nor was he ready for this.
Sukuna saw how yuji was caught off guard by the question and he could see how hard yuji was thinking, if it was any other time maybe sukuna would’ve allowed himself to laugh at how bad his brother was at lying, but right now he just wants some answers
“I don’t know” yuji finally spoke up, but he didn’t make eye contact and instead had his gaze fixed on the floor in front of him
“Bullshit” sukuna spat out “try again”
Yuji knew sukuna would know he was lying but he tried anyways, he wants to think he wouldn’t have given in as easily as he is right now
“She does” yuji answered even more quiet than the first time
Sukuna feels every beat of his heart and is painfully aware of his own breathing. He really didn’t think this would’ve been an outcome and he feels as if this is all a very bad joke.
Yuji felt like he knew what the next question was, but his main concern is how sukuna came about asking these questions. Not that he thinks Sukuna is stupid but his brothers general apathy had given yuji hope that sukuna wouldn’t have found out on his own, especially with how careful you and gojo were being
“Is it gojos kid?” Sukuna spoke lowly and yuji closed his eyes in acceptance that Sukuna isn’t asking out of cluelessness, he’s asking to confirm what he’s already suspicious of so lying would do nothing but make things worse
Yuji doesn’t answer, at least not verbally, as much as he had been hoping that sukuna would eventually know the truth yuji didn’t want it to be this way— with all the pressure on him. So instead all yuji does is shake his head no in response, his eyes still fixed on the ground.
Sukuna laughed a humorless, dry laugh. If the kid wasn’t gojos, then it had to be his, there was no one else you were with 4 years ago. And yet he still refuses to accept it, its really not a situation he’d ever expected to find himself in.
“Whose kid is it, yuji” sukuna asked with a hint of what sounded like desperation in his voice
“I think you… need to talk to her, I can’t answer this” the use of his name had him taken aback but yuji spoke with faltering confidence and looked sukuna directly in his eyes. This isn’t his issue and he wasn’t going to be the one to break the news, it’s not what you would’ve wanted either.
“Why aren’t you answering? Do you think you owe her some sort of loyalty?” Sukuna snapped
Yuji furrowed his brows at this, he hated to hear sukuna talk ill of you. Sure yuji doesn’t “owe” you loyalty but you’ve been nothing but kind to yuji, on top of never speaking bad about sukuna. He truly wonders how you and his brother were ever a thing considering the vastly different worlds you lived in.
“This isn’t my conversation to have, sukuna” yuji bit back, now it was his brothers turn to refuse to make eye contact
Sukuna stood unmoved from the doorway, partially in shock at this revelation. Just a few hours ago his priority was entirely different than whatever the fuck it was now. At first he was just trying to gauge how difficult it'd be to get you back from gojo and now it was an entirely different beast, it was a kid-- HIS kid apparently.
Emotions that he never thought he’d feel when thinking about you flood his mind.
You were the only person he had that he felt genuine love for, an emotion foreign to him simply because he believes he hadn’t been born with such grace on his side. Not out of pity for himself, just a genuine observation. Everything fell into place when he was with you, and he found himself clinging to your every word and action as if it was gospel. And he knows that kind of control you had over him—intentional or not, was what scared him.
There was no way he was going to sleep or even attempt to sleep. So instead he decides he’s going to get answer-- now. For the first time he finds himself at a standstill, theres not really a way he can just sleep this off but he didn’t feel like a call or text was appropriate.
If he called or texted you, you’d easily avoid his questions not just that but he wouldn’t be able to see your body language. He used to pride himself on being able to tell when you’re lying to him, but he thinks he’s lost that privilege. Youre clearly not the same person he knew and it distressed him. All of this was too much for his mind to settle with— you being capable of hiding something so important from him. Maybe a few hours ago he’d rethink his next choices for your sake but in his mind this situation he was put in didn’t really require him to be courteous.
Of course not without thinking about his ungrateful brother. If yuji caught wind that sukuna intended to go to Gojos house at this hour he’d surely tell you or fushiguro and that would give you time to either leave or come up with some lie. He needed to catch you off guard, since you clearly had no issue with lying to his face.
Sukuna scoffed “Fine”
Yuji watched as his brother turned around getting ready to leave the house again and it made him jump a little in surprise as he realized sukuna didn’t plan on staying home
“Where are you going?” Yuji asked— dumbly and nervously, but he was met with silence
“Sukuna its late, come on-“ yuji began again but he was cut off
“Lets go. You said I should ask her, so let’s do that” sukunas voice was eerily calm and yuji felt his stomach turn
It felt like he’d been caught red handed, growing up he’d been able to get away with most things he’d gotten in trouble for simply because his grandfather was too old to care. Yuji thinks maybe the is what it was like to be afraid of your parents finding out you did something bad. His breathing was getting heavier as he realized you’d probably think this was his fault, and his head spun as he thought about how sukuna probably hated him even more now.
“I didn’t mean right now! Sh- she’s probably asleep or—“ yuji stuttered out
“Then she can wake up” sukuna interrupted “Lets. Go.”
Yuji gulped and clenched his fists he knew it was pointless to argue but he still felt the need to try “Can’t you just call her or something? We can wait til tomorrow we can go first thing in the morning” but all sukuna did was stare with an unreadable expression on his face.
Yuji realized sukuna was waiting for him to move and he didn’t know what to do first. Yuji turned around to grab his phone and keys from the table but sukuna spoke up “Leave it”
“But my phone-“ yuji began
“I know, I said leave it” sukuna repeated, if it sounded fucked up that he wanted to catch you off guard he didnt really care. He thinks the kid you’re probably hiding is a lot worse.
Yuji cursed to himself, he hated how it seems like sukuna read his mind. Yuji had every intention of alerting you or megumi he didn’t want you to be blindsided or feel ambushed by his brother, he had to force himself to swallow down a rude response to his brother because yujis guilt was too overwhelming that even if he wanted to help you, the idea of “betraying” his brother again made his stomach twist.
The car was filled with a suffocating silence, it was hard to describe. Yuji felt it was similar to when your head is underwater and the world becomes muffled and the only thing you can really sense is your breathing. He feels it become harder to catch his breath and the moment the silence in the car breaks would be like when you finally lift your head out of the water. He doesn’t realize he’s holding his breath, simply out of fear that if sukuna so much as heard him breathe he would say something. Yet, sukuna didn’t say a single word… yuji wondered if he was even paying attention to the road considering how disconnected he seemed.
Yuji didn’t really wonder how sukuna knew where you lived because the one of the few conditions sukuna had when yuji first moved in (aside from not being too loud) was to share his location with sukuna at all times. It makes sense but yuji never thought his brother paid any attention to that, considering he always asked where yuji had been. Yuji felt incredibly naïve to think that sukuna wouldn’t take that opportunity to figure out your address.
Meanwhile, Sukuna doesn’t feel like its quiet enough. He can still hear the pot holes he drives over, the muffled sound of wind hitting his car and the sound of the turn signals as he drives. It was all too loud as he tries to think of what he’s going to say to you. He wonders why he even brought yuji with him, it’s not like there would be any benefit he had heard enough from him for the night. Yet the idea of going to see you alone seemed jarring, even if yuji clearly showed that he chose you over his own brother, at least if yuji was there Sukuna wouldn’t face you with no one behind him. He finds himself frustrated with the thought that he didn’t want to be alone. He consistently tried to convince himself that through his solitude was how he has gotten so far, yet the past few months had grown increasingly challenging as he realized you moved forward without him, and now yuji is slowly but surely replacing him. He’s not even sure what makes him have this train of thought it sounds self pitying and pathetic in sukunas opinion but he cant get it out of his head. Maybe it’s the idea that its him being left behind, instead of him leaving you behind, he doesn’t linger too long on the thought that it has to be some sort of underlying abandonment issue.
And the worst part about this is the kid— he has a fucking kid? But as screwed up as it sounded his first thought wasn’t to see his kid, no… it was to see you. The anger he felt… he wasn’t even sure where it stemmed from, he never felt passionately about having a kid, it wasn’t even a reality he’d imagined for himself but it was more the principle of the matter— that you looked in his eyes that night you dropped yuji off and still denied him the truth. And its that thought that causes his heart to twist uncomfortably and for him to anxiously (although he’d never admit that) run his hand through his hair as he stares at the red light that seemed to be taking too long on purpose, as if it knew he wanted to get to you as soon as possible.
————
“I thought you said you were good at this” you laughed
“I am! This is the best wrapping i’ve ever seen what are you talking about?” Gojo responded, in complete seriousness
You and Gojo had decided to wrap the kids christmas presents considering it was 2 days away. You were both sat in your matching pajamas (a gag gift from gojo that you and the kids were “honored” to receive according to him) on the living room floor trying your best to make the presents look pretty. Gojo swears he’s amazing but Airi could probably do better than him at this point, it surprised you because he was usually good at most things he did.
Gojo in all honesty was tired from the work “party” (if thats what people want to call it, he sure wont) but he felt as if he needed this distraction. Going to bed with a bitter taste in his mouth about his day had him disgruntled, so you suggested wrapping the gifts and eating leftover cake from megumis birthday. You opted for wrapping megumis presents so they looked decent considering they were expensive and since airi couldn’t care less about presentation all she cares about is the actual present, gojos “expertise” were perfect for her gifts.
Megumi got a new gaming console, headset and a few new games while Airi got pretty much her whole list. From a new doll house, to new dolls, a fake kitchen play set (which you find ironic since she’s so picky), nail polish, and new plushies. You tried to convince gojo to not go all out but he insisted. You don’t get too bothered because if megumi had asked for more gojo would’ve done the same for him, you think maybe thats just the best way gojo can show his affection. And each time he always insists that its from the both of you even if you contributed nothing financially. It eats away at your conscience and you cant help but feel guilty every year.
“Y’know airi should start pre-school or something soon” you sighed as you cut across the glittery red wrapping paper— also gojos choice, you probably would’ve chosen something less difficult to tape the glitter made it hard for the tape to stick so you had to use a lot but at least it was pretty.
“No, she does not have you seen the other kids these days? All terrible” Gojo looked at you with disgust
“Satoru she doesn’t have anybody her age around her, her social skills are going to be horrible if I don’t at least do a day care or school” you argued
“Who cares about that, megumi lacks social skills and he’s doing just fine” gojo said as he waved the scissors in his hand around (he was lying through his teeth)
You scrunched up your nose and shook your head “not the best example, he barely stopped getting in fights this year”
Gojo rolled his eyes as he went back to poorly wrapping the dog plushie airi asked for, you told him to use a bag but he did his own thing “well I think shes fine, what if you put her in dance or a sport at least until kindergarten”
The both of you sat in silence for the next few minutes as you contemplated the idea, maybe she would like to do something fun that could be a hobby but its so hard when she’s so indecisive, she’s only 3 its not like you expect her to be invested in anything. The topic of the future made you anxious, and for some reason there was already a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, you thought it was just your usual rush of anxiety that constant sense of impending doom but it just felt different today, so you opted to change the subject again… maybe if you don’t think about it you’ll be fine.
“She’s gonna love the kitchen” you giggled as you watched gojo very pathetically attempt to wrap it
“Do I need to wrap this?” Gojo whined “Genuinely will this even work” it was a giant box because the toy still needed to be assembled. You could already picture yourself annoyed at the instructions, sometimes kids toys made no sense.
“Probably not but I was waiting for you to figure that out” you laughed while gojo just glared at you
Your laugh was abruptly cut off by the sound of knocking on the front door (If you could’ve call it that it sounded more like someone was kicking the door.) Your voice caught in your throat as you and gojo made eye contact, it was a little too late to be expecting visitors and your mind already started thinking the worst, like maybe it was one of your neighbors having an emergency. Sukuna so far from your mind as you were lulled into a false sense of security with gojo, wrapping presents pretending like it was always going to be like this.
“Im gonna check on airi” you whispered
Gojo nodded but you don’t know what compelled you to wait until he approached the door.
Gojo looked through the peephole trying to see who it was and you watched as his posture changed. His shoulders slumped and he dropped his arms clenching one of his fists at his side. You moved to see who it was but gojo wouldn’t budge
You furrowed your brow “what is it?” You whispered, a little annoyed that he wasn’t moving
Gojo just dropped his head to look at the floor and sighed letting your question hang in silence
“Satoru seriously what is it?” You almost want to laugh not because theres anything funny but because you’re nervous
Gojo didn’t really know how to tell you that sukuna was on the other side of the door with an unpleasant look on his face (not that his face ever looked pleasant in gojos humble opinion). But the man looked angry, and gojo hated to think about what could possibly have him looking like that. Internally Gojo prepared himself for the possibility of sukuna having found out about airi, and he knew you’d probably want him on standby by to make sure airi is okay.
“Its sukuna” gojo mumbled
Your eyes widen as your heart beat sped up, almost immediately your entire body had such a visceral reaction “what do you mean sukuna? he’s here?” You asked for clarification even if gojo was perfectly clear
Gojo nodded and looked at you with a pained expression “he looks displeased”
You swallowed thickly, trying to even out your breathing “maybe he’ll go away”
But he kept knocking and it caused you to jump slightly while gojo snapped his head back to the door
You felt your feet glued to the same spot, you couldn’t move it was almost as if your brain wasn’t even in charge of your body anymore. Your breathing became erratic and it became harder to control, you tried to think of any possibility he would have for coming to your home so late. Your eyes widened as you thought maybe it was an emergency with yuji but before you could voice that gojo spoke up
“We have to answer it, the knockings gonna wake up airi” he told you calmly “do you want me to answer it first?” He wasn’t too concerned about megumi because he was probably awake watching something with his headphones on at a way too loud volume to be considered normal. He knew you weren’t really processing that sukuna was outside your door so he put his hand on your shoulder and said your name but the look in your eyes told him you were far from present.
“Im going to answer you can wait right here” he maneuvered you just out of sight at the entrance of the kitchen which was next to the front door
———
Sukuna grew more agitated with each passing second. Why weren’t you answering the door? he knows you’re awake, last time he checked you were a night owl. Never asleep before 1 am no matter what, but that was 4 years ago, had you really changed that much? He remembers why he came and the sudden softness he felt for you hardens quickly.
Sukuna shouted your name “Answer the door, I know you’re in there!” as he continued to knock and as he was met with a few more moments of silence he got prepared to knock again but before his now red knuckles could hit the door again, it swung open.
Sukuna scowled as he saw who had answered and gojo returned the expression
“Is there something I can help you with? Do you know what time it is? We have neighbors.” gojo asked loudly— so much for ‘be quiet its late’
“Im not here to talk to you, you idiot” Sukuna snapped
Gojo realized sukuna had a look in his eyes that screamed unease. Like he was hanging on by a thread and it made gojo almost slam the door in his face because there was no way you were going to talk to Sukuna when he looked like that. But before he could make that decision for you he saw you move out of the corner of his eye, you came to stand slightly behind him but next to him. He looked down at you with the silent question of ‘what are you doing’ written on his face but your eyes were fixed on the man in front of you.
Sukuna pretends that the sight of your already glassy eyes doesn’t make his heart skip a little, he’d never really remain unaffected by you no matter how much he tried. But that fleeting moment of softness for you quickly fizzled away at the sight of you and gojo in matching fucking pajamas, I mean really it felt like this happened on purpose as if you and gojo had planned it. He feels his jealousy bubbling up inside of him and he refuses to even acknowledge the white haired man next to you. Sukuna also noted the way you seemed to hide behind gojo, which also pisses him off because why would you’d have to be shielded from him? He has never hurt you and he never would and to see the way you acted so unfamiliar to him had his mind buzzing.
You haven’t torn your eyes away from sukuna, you notice the barely hidden look of franticness in his eyes, you feel his gaze swallowing you whole. It’s a look in his eyes you never thought you’d be on the receiving end of.
“What do you want?” You asked trying to make your voice stable but you know you must have sounded like a mess
“We need to talk” sukuna replied with a calmness that felt too eerie to be comfortable “Alone” he added as he finally looked at gojo
“Not a chance, what do you want-“ gojo started but you interrupted him abruptly “Fine”
You turned to satoru completely “im fine, just make sure everythings good inside” you hoped he’d catch onto the way you were asking him to check on airi, last thing you need is for her to be awake and hearing what you imagine wont be a pleasant conversation judging by sukunas demeanor
Gojo didnt want to question you in front of sukuna so all he did was put his hand on your arm and squeezed it briefly before pointedly staring at sukuna as he disappeared behind the door before coming back with a jacket.
"here its too cold out here" gojo mumbled as he shoved the jacket in your hands, you recognized it as his and you were thankful because it was freezing outside and you cant imagine this conversation was going to be fast. You shrugged the jacket on ignoring sukunas pointed stare, he was so obviously bothered it was annoying to you.
The pink haired mans eyebrow slightly twitched at the interaction that unfolded before him but before he could get any more riled up about it your voice pulled him out of his thoughts “what did you want to talk about?” you asked, stepping out of the house and closing the door behind you
Sukuna felt a small smirk try to fight its way onto his face you were responding in short, terse comments you were trying so hard to remain calm but he knows you, he can hear the wave of insecurity hidden in your voice.
“Is there something you need to tell me?” Sukuna spat out
You’re not sure what he thinks he knows. Your mind is telling you hes found out about airi but what if he wasn’t? What if he just thinks you’re dating gojo or something unimportant. You're already overthinking just trying to understand what exactly his intentions are.
“Do you want to elaborate?” You asked calmly
Sukuna felt his eye twitch slightly, he thinks it was probably very obvious. He takes the opportunity to turn around and look at where he parked to make sure yuji is still in the car but also to make you look. He knows if you saw yuji, you’d probably understand why he was here.
You followed Sukunas line of sight as you saw yuji sitting in the front seat of sukunas car, that you only recognize because you saw it the day you dropped yuji off. Yuji looked shocked at the way both you and sukuna stared at him and he quickly fixed his gaze forward instead of the two of you. Yuji knows you could probably see the guilt riddled on his face and he so badly wants to tell you it wasn’t him but by the time he attempts to look at you and sukuna again you’re already back to staring at his brother.
Sukuna turned back to you to find you already glaring at him, as if you have anything to be mad at
“You know what Im talking about don’t play dumb” sukuna began
You just squinted your eyes slightly “I don’t know what you’re talking about I cant read your mind, sukuna” it was your turn to lace your tone with spite
“Whose kid is it? I know you have one, who is the father?” Sukuna said bluntly, speaking so casually as if he hadn’t just shattered whatever front you had
He watched as your face faltered, your eyebrows furrowed, mouth twitching and your body tensed. You looked back at the car and noticed yuji staring again you felt cornered somehow. You had an inkling you felt like you knew why he was here the second you saw his face but you refused to accept it. Even now, as Sukuna so brazenly asked his dreaded question you felt as if it was dream— you’d simply fallen asleep while wrapping the gifts with gojo.
Yet the cold biting at the tip of your nose and the man standing in front of you demanding an answer said otherwise. You couldn’t find your voice and you couldn’t look at his face, you didn’t know how to answer him even if the answer was simple.
“I-“ you began, you feel as if you’d forgotten every word you’d ever learned because your mind was coming up blank. You took the opportunity to look up at him to see his face but he simply looked unamused, it made you feel worse. The look on his face was always something you strived to avoid when you were dating and something you subconsciously were still trying to avoid all these years later. The very idea that his eyes could bear such reproof for you was terrifying, and to see it now made your heart ache in a way you weren’t prepared for.
And even more so the way he was still so breathtaking to you, even with his hair messy because he was clearly running his hands through it, even with the blush spreading across his face from the cold, you truly could not wrap your head around the fact that he was real. His tattoos and the ones peaking through the collar of his hoodie had you becoming completely distracted-- if only for a moment.
Sukuna slightly raised his brows in a mocking manner indicating he was waiting for you to continue. It wasn’t encouraging in the slightest
You cleared your throat in hopes that it’d stop the cry building in your throat “I have a daughter” you stated, your voice wavered as you avoided sukunas glare. You stared pointedly at your feet, the tears were building in your eyes before you could stop them obscuring the view of your shoes, you let the tear drops fall as they slid down your cheeks. It was strange to feel your warm tears while the cold air bit at your face let yourself embrace it— It almost felt comforting. You quickly wiped them away as the silence between you and sukuna grew overwhelming.
You lifted your head to meet sukunas eyes “you’re her father” you whispered so quietly had sukuna not been holding his breath he’s sure he wouldn’t have heard you.
There was something cruel in the way your eyes were glistening with tears and your body shook— from the cold or nerves he could not tell. Cruel in the sense that you’re acting as if you hadnt been hiding this. He knew it, felt it, from the second yuji couldn’t answer.
“Did you know” he spoke tone indiscernible
“What do you mean?” Your brows furrowed as you sniffled
“When we broke up did you know” he doesn’t know why he wants to know that, he’s somehow afraid of the answer
You shook your head in response “it didn’t happen then” you mumbled
It clicked then in Sukunas head that it was that god damned one night stand stunt he pulled. His eyes widened slightly and hes glad you were too busy wiping your eyes to see his surprise. Somehow he knew he’d come to regret that night even more than he already did. Even if that night was the last time he felt actually well rested solely because he had you in his arms again, your presence down to feeling you breathe, how your shampoo and lotion smelled, everything about you had overtaken his senses. He missed you, he had missed you so much it made him so frustrated to be so weak for you, and having to leave you that next morning— without so much as a goodbye sent him spiraling for months after, doing the opposite of what he wanted.
He didn’t know where to start or what to ask he didnt even think he wanted to know anymore yet the words start rising to his throat unbidden “why didn’t you tell me?” He spat out
You slightly startled not expecting his harsh tone out of nowhere “Oh please” you laughed it was vacant of any actual amusement “I did, I tried so hard sukuna you have no idea”
He furrowed his brows and opened his mouth to speak buy you cut him off “If you happen to remember you blocked me on literally everything… I tried calling and texting I even used someone else’s phone and yet there was never a response” you started to get a little louder from all the pent up resentment
“And you couldn’t leave a voicemail? Or even texted me this?” Sukuna asked incredulously
You gawked “I DID! I fucking did, i texted you from 3 different numbers that it was me and that I needed to talk to you, I left plenty of voicemails telling you to call me back” you shouted your tone quickly escalating from what it once was and you were shaking from how angry you were “what else was I supposed to do? I couldn’t even go find you, I wouldn’t even know where to begin” you spat out, choosing to leave out the fact that he never gave you anything of his past that could’ve served as a hint for you, that wasn’t the point of this and it didnt even matter now anyways, you weren’t together anymore anyways.
Sukuna genuinely could not recall such attempts in the moment but if he stopped to think he'd surely remember (he deleted every voicemail and ignored every text for his sanity unknowing of the urgency behind them) although it probably didn’t help there was about 3 months that he wasn’t sober in any sense. That was the life he tried to convince himself he wanted to live, nothing but things that would bring entertainment to him.
So, youre not entirely wrong, you did try but thanks to time, alcohol, drugs and denial sukuna truly did not recall such events. Ignoring everything you just said he cuts your rant off “what about when you saw me the other night?”
To that you had no answer so he continued “how long did you know yuji was my brother?”
You swallowed looking back at the car to see yuji had put his head against the window but his gaze was faced forward you looked back to sukuna “from the moment I met him” you answered honestly
Sukuna scoffed he took a minute to look up at the house behind you. He didn't really notice how nice it actually was and how one of the windows upstairs had a light on. He looked back down at the door behind you and his stomach turned uncomfortably, he realized behind that door was an entire life you’d built without him. You’d even included yuji in this sickeningly domestic life.
“You knew that whole time that I was back” sukuna spoke, not a question but simply a statement
“I was going to-“ you began
“But you didn’t” he cut you off
He felt disgusted that you were scrambling to create excuses “if I hadnt found out, when would you have told me, if at all?” He questioned accusatorially
“I don’t know” you irritably replied “I don’t know, I was waiting for a right moment-“
“You needed a right moment to tell me about MY kid?” He argued
Fighting the urge to roll your eyes you settle on staring straight into sukunas eyes “I did” you spoke resolutely
Sukuna had to physically bite his tongue to stop himself from saying things that could make this much worse not because he cared if he hurt you, if he was being honest he’d lost a lot of respect for you. In his opinion you had no moral high ground here yet you could very easily not allow him to see his kid, although hes not even sure he wanted to meet her. It sounds like an absolutely shitty thing to say but he cant help but feel like he has no emotion about this aside from betrayal on yujis and your behalf.
And yet, “What’s her name?” He asked before he could stop himself
Your eyes widened slightly and you know he saw it “Airi” you spoke with much more certainty, he noticed and there was the smallest spark in your eyes, the same one he recognized when you’d start to talk about something you were passionate about-- he missed it.
“Birthday?”
“Her birthday?” You questioned making sure you understood since he wasn’t really using sentences he only nodded in response. So you continued “March 21st”
You saw the look of realization on his face, that it was right after yujis birthday yet he didn’t say anything.
There was an uncomfortable silence after you told him that, you didn’t really know what to say. There was nothing to say to make this any better and you knew that, as much as sukuna knew that too.
“Why?”
You heard vulnerability laced within the word, something you’d never heard from sukuna. You felt your chest burn as you accepted the fact that you were the cause of it. You knew what he was asking and standing here now, you felt like a fool for your reasoning.
“Y’know I wasn’t mad that you broke up with me” you began your eyes settled on his chest he was wearing a black hoodie with some weird symbol on it and you focused solely on that as you continued “I was at first especially since it was right after my birthday but once that initial rage calmed down I just felt” you trailed off
Sukuna felt annoyed at this monologue you were putting on he didn’t really ask for the reminder of one of his biggest regrets
“I felt hopeless I guess, I thought you were my end all be all. If you asked me to I would’ve stayed with you for as long as you’d let me and yet you couldnt even tell me why you dumped me”
Sukuna rolled his eyes slightly but you didnt see it so he interrupted you “So its some sort of revenge?”
You ignored him “I remember begging you to tell me why” you laughed but it sounded like you were in pain “Do you? How you walked to my room to grab your shit without so much as looking my way”
The memory of that night flooded sukunas brain, you were trailing behind him crying asking him why, what you did wrong, if he was okay. And he remembers ignoring it all. You stood in the door way watching him slowly gather his things as if he was trying to rid you of his presence before you even had the chance to mourn it.
“Years, we were together for YEARS and you left as if I was nothing, If you didnt want to be with me— I couldnt change that” you spat out and you finally moved your gaze from his sweater to his face that wasn’t looking at you but the door behind you “but you could’ve told me why… I deserved that much at least”
Sukuna still didn’t understand what the correlation was but you pressed on “then you come back for one night just to leave me more fucked up than before you came yet again leaving without thinking of what that did to me” you sniffled as you stared daggers into him while he finally moved his line of sight back to your face. Your face-- that beyond the melancholy your eyes held there was a subtle hint of rage.
Your voice raised and you choked up “Selfish. You were selfish, sukuna! And then I found out I was pregnant and after months of my desperate attempts— all my attempts to get you to care I just gave up” you shrugged exaggeratedly “Do you have any idea how exhausting that is?” starting to openly cry you continued “Do you know how much it hurt to try to get you to care not even about me but your kid?” You quickly wiped the tears from your eyes and sukuna felt a sinking feeling of guilt not liking the way this conversation was going.
Your voice sounded unfamiliar to you as you struggled to talk through the tears “So fine, I settle with the fact that I’ll tell you eventually, even if I wanted you to know then, even if I wanted you there every step of the way even if I wanted airi to know-“ you shook your head and brought your hands up to your face as your body was shaking with your muffled cries
Sukuna didn’t know what to do or say he held himself back from his urge to wrap his arms around you, it felt too foreign now, he hadn’t realized just how much of a stranger you were to him now. He deluded himself into thinking he’d be able to get you back somehow, that you wouldn’t even think twice of being with him again. Yet as he watched you breakdown in front of him and he heard how you felt about him, he’d be lying if he said he didn’t lose hope.
You calmed down after a few moments, having needed to let the cry out to be able to continue talking. You sniffled and it sounded disgusting as your nose was runny but you continued “I can’t put airi through that” your voice was gentle but hurt “if thats how you treat people you ‘love’ I cant subject her to that, she’s better off not knowing you at all”
Sukuna thinks he feels a crack in his heart form at that last part, the implication behind your words that you probably thought you would’ve been better off not knowing him made his ears ring. He wanted to tell you to stop but he couldn’t find it in himself to speak
“Because if I told you about her, if you came into her life and abandoned her the way you left me, without so much as a reason” you shook your head “I won’t let that happen to my baby” you wiped your nose and waited for sukuna to say something, he’d been oddly quiet and he was avoiding looking directly at you
Sukunas throat felt dry as he let your words sink in surely he’d look back on this and understand your reasoning but to no ones surprise he lets his defensiveness speak for him
“And you decided that for me” he spoke matter of factly but he could clearly hear the hurt in his words, he hoped you hadnt noticed
You wanted to punch him. Thats what he had to say after everything you told him, after the years of built up resentment and sadness, it made you sick. But if he wanted to play that way then fine, he knew you were always one to match his attitude and even if it was petty and immature you didnt care, he clearly didnt.
“I did” you answered back in the same tone
————
Gojo sat on the couch with his head thrown back as he screwed his eyes shut. Had he been as harsh on you as he is with others maybe he would’ve given you better advice. He should’ve told you to tell sukuna, he shouldn’t have coddled your emotions but he couldn’t help it. Sure, he doesn’t think sukuna is a good person he doesn’t deserve to be graced by you or airis presence but he is airis father.
Maybe because he’d been out of the picture for years it was easy to imagine him as merely a sperm donor but after hearing the entire conversation you and sukuna decided to share with the neighborhood, an uncomfortable feeling of guilt settles in gojos gut. He shouldn’t feel bad for sukuna and yet he does… that man probably doesnt even care about airi but granted the reality of the situation sucked. If gojo was in sukunas shoes he’s not even sure he’d be able to even look at you. All things he should’ve thought about before any of this happened, but it was too late now and he was probably going to be left to pick up the pieces. He heard foot steps running down the stairs and didn’t bother looking, he had honestly wondered if megumi noticed what was happening, gojo didn’t really think to alert him. He’d been too concerned with checking on airi and as your conversation got louder he decided to stay close, just in case.
“What is going on?” Megumi harshly whispered
Gojo sighed and kept his eyes closed “he knows… about airi”
Megumi figured as much considering he heard most of the argument but he was still confused “she told him?”
Gojo shook his head “we don’t know how he found out, the fucker just showed up out of nowhere”
Megumis brows furrowed he had at least 10 more questions but he could tell gojo wasn’t in the mood
“Is she okay?” Megumi asked, he clarified he was talking about you as gojo looked him waiting for an elaboration
“Probably not” gojo shrugged
Megumi didn’t really know what to do, he hadn’t received a text from yuji so maybe he doesn’t know that sukuna is here. Or maybe he actually told his brother, megumi didnt want to think yuji would do that so he quickly shut that thought down
“That guys an idiot” gojo mumbled
And all megumi could do was nod in agreement.
————
“And yuji?” He asked angrily
“What about him?” You asked with a mocking tone
Sukuna looked back at his parked the car, of course the brat was trying to listen in because the second sukuna turned around yuji took his head off the window and looked at the steering wheel of the car instead, trying to play it off
“You manipulated him into not telling me, you claim im the bad guy here yet you-“ sukuna was cut off by you too quickly for his liking
“For your information, sukuna, I was expecting him to tell you, in fact when he found out I swore that was it, I freaked out trying to think about how he’d tell you everything” you spoke with gritted teeth “but I guess you just have your head so far up your own ass that he decided not to tell you”
Sukunas eyes widened slightly “I didn’t need to do anything, you did all the work yourself” you huffed out, glaring at him like you’re sick
He didn’t have a response to that, he knows its probably true yuji decided that on his own.
And somehow in this moment he’s a child again. He’s watching as his parents look at him with disgust, as his grandfather tells him to ‘just behave’, and as his classmates run away in fear from him. Sukuna himself does not realize thats what hes experiencing in the moment, he just thinks the look in your eyes pisses him off.
He thinks you’re never going to stop taking from him. You’ve taken all the space in his brain that is allowed, you’ve taken a part of him and created a whole other person out of it. You took his kid from him and now his brother. It’s not supposed to be like this with him practically at your mercy, with him just lucky enough to be granted a glance from you.
How much was it going to take to change this? To set things right, to start over. Had he confused your power for his? All this time he really could’ve convinced himself you were wrapped around his finger, but he was cruelly proven wrong.
You cleared your throat snapping sukuna out of his thoughts, you didnt know what he was thinking or what he was planning but it made you anxious
“Did you want to meet her?” You asked quietly
“No” sukuna answered all to quickly. He needed time, he didn’t know how much but he couldn’t see her like this. Any normal person would think they’d hate to spend one more second not knowing but he thinks if he met her and he was face to face with a life he’s missed with you, well he’d probably lose his mind.
You flinched at his response and you felt your heart shatter, it was exactly what you were afraid of you knew it. You started to nod in acceptance, because at least you knew it was coming, at least airi didn’t have to know this happened
Sukuna realized you couldn’t read his thoughts as he saw you cave in on yourself, you were shaking and nodding the tears away so he spoke up “not right now I mean” he corrected
You looked him like he was full of shit “It wasn’t going to be right now, she’s asleep”
Sukuna bites back a comment on how you wouldn’t have woken her up for this but chose not to
“You should go” you said, tired of his immaturity
He needed to say something, even if he was mad at you, at everything that just happened “Ill call you” he spoke
You laughed in his face “Go home” you spat out
He wasn’t ready for how fast you retreated from him or how loud and hard you slammed the front door in his face after you went inside.
He was left staring at the doormat, it was a shade of blue that somehow looked lonely. He was disgusted by his vulnerable train of thought, this was not something he wanted to indulge in yet the silence you left him with was eating him alive. The thing about you was that you posed a threat to his own personal philosophy. Love was merely a concept people needed to cope, to find a reason for their existence and for him he was convinced he didn’t need someone else to satisfy his needs. Yet everything about you contradicted that, after all these years he was still left feeling as if he needed you. It was abhorrent.
After a few minutes of being unable to move, his feet moved of their own will as he walked back to his car. The way yuji avoided looking at him made him slam the door shut as he got in the drivers seat
“How long did you know” sukuna asked quietly but Yuji couldnt discern any of type of emotion from his words
Yuji held his breath as he prepared to answer “It wasn’t long” he mumbled “maybe 2 weeks”
Sukuna merely scoffed as he inserted the key into the ignition, he didn’t really have anything to say. Sukuna of all people who always knew what to say, who always knew what he wanted, just didn’t have any words.
———
You slammed the door shut and leaned against it, sliding down to sit on the floor with your knees tucked to your chest you put your head in your hands and cried. It was a continuous stream of tears as you sat with your guilt.
Gojo shooed megumi to his room, which megumi was more than happy to take this opportunity to get away. Not that he didnt want to be there for you but he’s not even sure he’d be of any use right now other than just standing awkwardly. Gojo approached you quietly as he sat down next to you on the floor, you had noticed but didn’t acknowledge him. You just sat there for what felt like forever and he allowed the silence between you two to speak for itself until you were ready.
You sighed and pressed the back of your head against the door “he doesn’t want to meet her” you whispered, voice raspy from the tears and the arguing with sukuna
Gojo couldn’t quite catch the end of your conversation with sukuna, all he had heard was mumbles so as you told him this he felt his heart break for you
“He said that?” he asked in disbelief
You nodded “I asked him if he wanted to meet her and he said no almost immediately” you sniffled “he noticed he fucked up cause he added ‘not right now’ quickly after” you shook your head in disbelief as you huffed out a small laugh
“He does need time to process” gojo spoke up “but-“
“I know he does, I never said he didn’t but its like he didn’t even need to think about it” you snapped “I just don’t know what to believe when he speaks”
Gojo cant blame you for feeling hurt by sukunas crass behavior but he can understand him, would he do the same? Probably no but thats not for gojo to say
“Im sorry it happened that way” gojo whispered and when he noticed you weren’t gonna respond he continued “I seriously don’t know how he found out, we didn’t talk about-”
“I know it wasn’t you satoru” you solemnly smiled at him "he is right though”
Gojo raised his brow as he waited for you to elaborate
“If he hadn’t found out” you waved your hand dismissively “in whatever way he did, I don’t know if I would’ve ever said anything” you whispered
You wanted to believe you would’ve told him eventually. That you would’ve swallowed your pride, would’ve stopped being a coward and just tell him— regardless of what came after. But you were comfortable, living with a false sense of security that your actions wouldn’t have consequences.
“You don’t know that” Gojo tried to reassure you, he thinks you would’ve a little late? Sure but your guilt was eating you alive
“Thank you satoru” you said as you leaned your head on his shoulder “I don’t think I say it enough” you whispered
Gojo could hear the insecurity laced in your words and he felt bad that you think you need to thank him, as if he’d done all of this for thanks but before he could say anything you slowly stood up
“Im going to sleep, ill see you tomorrow” you mumbled
“I got breakfast, okay?” Gojo spoke and when you looked at him, the look in his eyes made you want to melt into a puddle of shame. He had concern swimming in the depths of his too blue eyes and it hurt, you didn’t want him to look at you like that, you didn’t want pity for something thats your fault
“Whatever airi wants” gojo added and you had to snap yourself out of your self loathing thoughts
Nodding with a small smile “sounds good” you murmured
———
“So thats it?” Yuji asked, the words left his mouth before he had a chance to stop them
Sukuna threw his keys on the kitchen table and started taking off his jacket, intent on ignoring that brat asking ridiculous questions
The drive back had been insufferably silent and yuji hated it, yet he couldnt bring himself to speak. He felt he wasnt in any place to ask sukuna what had happened but at the same time, if he was dragged along to that confrontation— for literally no reason, the least sukuna could do was say something… like a single word.
“Are you going to meet her?” yuji was clearly referring to airi and the sentence made sukunas heart clench slightly
Sukuna rolled his eyes as he walked to the kitchen, he was in desperate need for some painkillers this whole ordeal gave him a headache. He should’ve known involving yuji in any way would have led to this, the kid was always too nosy for his own good and if he didn’t respond the questions would simply keep going.
“Eventually” sukuna grunted out, he was tired and did not feel like explaining himself to his traitor of a brother. He is still not over the idea that yuji was complicit in this, he always knew yuji was stupid but this was a new low.
“Eventually?” Yuji asked, he sounded like that was his first time hearing the word and Sukuna wouldn’t be surprised by that possibility
“So what was the point?” Yuji asked “you dragged me down there with you, you went and harassed them at nearly 1 am-“
“Harassed?” Sukuna repeated with a smile teasing on his face “you really need to learn what words mean before you use the-“
“Do you even care about her or airi? Or do you just want something to control” Yuji sounded disturbed, like he couldnt wrap his head around the idea that his brother wouldn’t fight to see airi. Was sukuna confusing love for control? Yuji doesnt understand why his brother denies so vehemently that he still loves you or why he would make such a big scene out of tonight if he didnt even plan to do anything about it, he just didn’t like not being the one in charge. That had to be it.
“Are you even going to try to be there for airi?” Yuji persisted and his tone was teetering on the edge of yelling
Sukuna felt whatever thin veil of patience he had snap, he wouldnt admit it but yujis words were striking a chord sukuna didn’t want to even go near “If you know whats good for you, you’d stop talking” he spoke with a threatening tone that told yuji to stop but he kept going
Deep down Yuji knew sukuna wouldn’t actually do anything it was all just a front “y’know at least our dad is dead” yuji huffed out “at least he literally physically cant be here-“
Sukuna laughed and it was yujis turn to furrow his brows, he didn’t understand why anything he said would be something to laugh at
“You idiot, Jin isn’t dead thats just what the old gas bag told you, to spare having to explain anything to you” sukuna spat out “Jin itadori is off doing god knows what who knows where, he’d be better off dead”
Yuji for some reason or another didn't feel surprised. HIs grandfather did try to tell him something before he passed he kept insisting he needed to talk to yuji about his parents but maybe in the back yujis mind he already knew. He’d never so much as visited his fathers grave, his grandfather always told him it was too far and as yuji got older that excuse made less and less sense and yet he never questioned it.
But to yuji, what hurt the most in the moment is that sukuna couldn’t see how low he’s stooped, how he was just always going to be stuck as a bitter and miserable man. Even if yuji didn’t know why sukuna hated their parents so much, he couldn’t fathom why sukuna couldn’t just be happy with what he had. Was his relationship with you not enough? Was having an actual child with you not enough? Yuji long since accepted that he’d never be enough for sukuna, for whatever reason sukuna just couldn’t be a normal brother, yuji stopped trying to understand.
In this moment, standing across from his brother— who still has a smirk on his face as if he thought he did something all yuji could feel was pity— not for himself but for his brother. There was no point in trying to get sukuna to understand, it wasn’t as though sukuna couldn't'— he was capable but he just didn’t want to. And at that point it was out of yujis hands, if sukuna had never been there for yuji why was he going to stand here and try to get sukuna to make better decisions.
Yuji laughed but it wasn’t a laugh sukuna had heard before. Sukuna likes to think he knows yujis body lanuage and mannerisms better than anyone else— considering the fact that he’s a decent amount of years older than yuji and yuji never really had many friends, its not like there was anyone else who would know him so well. While he could talk to just about anybody, which pissed sukuna off to no end especially in yujis toddler days when they’d go to a store and yuji would talk up a storm with anyone who had the misfortune of making eye contact, yet sukuna noticed yuji wasn’t a “friends” person. It seemed to be preferred, like yuji wanted the solitude despite knowing he could be well liked by anyone, and thats why sukuna knew he was screwed when yuji entered high school and actually had a group of friends, there was no convincing yuji that the fushiguro kid was satans (gojos) spawn cause when yuji did decide he had friends, he took it very serious.
So whenever yuji did something sukuna hadn’t seen before (it was rare) it always made him irrationally annoyed because he didn’t know what to expect next. As he took one look at yujis face, and he saw pititful look yuji was giving him Sukuna could’ve sworn the vein on his forehead could’ve burst
“Well im sure airi will be thrilled to be able to say the same thing about you” yuji spat out “like father like son, right?”
Yuji began to walk away from sukuna, ignoring the look of complete and utter disbelief sukuna had written on his face. Stopping at the foot of the stairs before heading to his room, throwing a small glance over his shoulder
“You’re proving her right you know?” Yuji mumbled, referring to your worries about sukunas presence in airis life
And when sukuna met gojo half way the handshake held more weight and tension than any conversation could.
The employee who had been trying to chat it up with gojo immediately noticed the shift in energy and made himself scarce, he could tell this was a conversation he didnt want to be a part of.
“So its been a while” gojo joked uneasy, he doesn’t know how to explain it but he could feel that his father was watching
“It has” sukuna dryly responded “figured it’d be sooner considering the brat has been hanging around you lately”
“Around megumi, not me, I hardly see him” gojo lied and shrugged as he reached for a non alcoholic drink from the tray that a waiter was holding “Hes a good kid though, not sure how you guys are related”
Sukuna smiled with a glint of irritation behind the eyes that anyone else wouldn’t have notice but gojo had the luxury of being classmates in high school with this guy so his mannerisms didn’t go unnoticed
“So you and her?” referring to you, Sukuna bit the bullet and asked because at the end of the day both him and gojo knew the conversation would end up there
“What about her” gojo didn’t take the bait though
“Just didn’t take you for a guy who would take someones leftovers” sukuna shrugged he knew the line that came out of his mouth was gross and in no way did he view you in that manner but he just needed to get a reaction out of gojo and insulting you or that black haired loser gojo used hang around would be the quickest way
“So thats what you think of her? Im sure she’d be thrilled to hear that” gojo tried to temper his attitude but sukunas comment agitated him, even if he knew it was just to get a reaction, it was working.
The immaturity sukuna was displaying made gojos stomach turn at the idea that sukuna would talk about the mother of his kid like that (sure he doesn’t know airi exists but still why would he speak about you in that manner even if it was for provocation)
“Well she’s dating you, so I’m sure shes heard worse” sukuna bit back, still not getting a direct answer
“Thats interesting for you, of all people, to say” gojo smiled with a contemptuous look on his face. Sukuna was halfway to a response before he was cut off
“So I see you two are finally having a chat” Gojo Sr. cut in conveniently at the right time to which satoru rolled his eyes
“Yes, I can see your son inherited your way with words” sukuna changed his demeanor entirely as he addressed Gojo Sr.
“I hope you mean in a good way” Gojo Sr. joked as he and sukuna laughed, Satoru stared at them with a fake smile
“Yeah, sukuna here has shown me why you both were able to come to an agreement with a deal” satoru interrupted with a cheerful tone “Certain minds think alike”
“Don’t you mean great?” Gojo sr. corrected with a playful tone that had an edge to it
Satoru hummed “no, I don’t think so”
Before gojo sr. could say anything back he was called away by his assistant and Satoru couldn’t have been more thankful, he didnt need his dad trying to get involved. The man wouldnt ever stay in conversations for long but when he did talk he was insufferable. Sukuna watched the interaction keenly, it was obvious by the way Gojo sr. spoke of his son to sukuna, that there was some level of disdain— from both father and son and the interaction only proved to be a confirmation.
“What are your intentions?” gojo finally spit out after his father was out of earshot, Sukuna gave him a look as if asking him to elaborate so gojo said your name quietly and that gained a glint of amusement from sukunas eyes
“That’s something that is none of your concern” sukuna replied smugly. Just because you’d been with gojo for the past few years doesn’t mean gojo has any right to be involved in you and sukunas business, at least thats how sukuna saw it.
“Not my concern?” gojo laughed in disbelief “You mean the same way it’s not your concern what her love life is like, right?”
Sukunas eye twitched slightly before gojo continued “if you really cared so much why didn’t you reach out to her in the months you’ve been back?” gojo was venturing into territory you would’ve smacked him over the head for but he doesn’t care he finds he genuinely needs to know what sukunas playing at
Through the years gojo has seen you pick yourself back up and piece yourself back together, constantly trying to be better. Trying to be someone without sukuna, something you hadn’t known since you started dating him so young. The very idea that sukuna could prance into your life and possibly undo all that makes gojo seethe. Gojo knows you’re an adult who can make your own decisions, he’s just looking out for you the same way he’s sure you’d look out for him if the shoe was on the other foot.
Before sukuna could even respond gojo was being called over by his father to prepare for some ridiculous speech. Sukuna is not stupid he’s aware if he screws up here with his behavior it wouldn’t look good for either company. No matter his distaste for gojo it wasn’t worth losing his job over. He kept that in mind (even if he despised gojos words) as he watched the white haired bastard walk away.
Or at least he thought but as the night went on he felt genuine disgust just being in gojos presence. Even as both father and son made decent speeches about another successful year for the company, even as gojo had the ability to work the room with literally any conversation. Nothing about it was genuine though, and it made it sukuna scowl every time he was subjected to hearing gojos bullshit in the next group over. Sukuna smirked thinking about how it looked bad on gojo considering this was supposed to be “his company” someday, yet the lack of tact was alarming.
Whatever, it wasn’t his problem, but it was truly sukunas favorite pastime to judge and criticize other peoples poor decisions. He just simply would not find himself in such ridiculous situations, he thinks, as he overhears most conversations through the night. It was all just petty drama or conversations that he considered himself above. A couple of times, rei would try to engage in conversation with him but his mind was only on you. As if fueled by his confrontation with gojo, he now swears he’ll be back with you. He doesn’t care if you and gojo are dating, he knows you still love him. You have to, right? He’s never really thought about if you don’t.
On the other side, in all honesty gojo had forgotten sukuna was there as he focused on entertaining the party. He was able to ignore sukuna for the sake of his job, something that he knew if he didn’t put his all into he’d hear it from his father later. So sure, he caves in and does what he does best— put on a show. A passionate worker that looks forward to all the great things the company has in store…bullshit. He did have changes he wanted to implement but with his father still in control of most of it, it just felt like an endless cycle of going nowhere. It wasn’t even two and a half hours into the event and gojo found a way to ease himself out of a too long conversation, as he searched for his secretary.
“Hana” gojo half shouted to her as she was enthusiastically talking with rei, she glanced over and waved at gojo
“Haven’t seen you all night, I assume its been busy” Hana joked
Rei admired Hanas ability to speak to gojo with such ease, if rei was in hanas shoes she’d be a rambling mess. Hana is aware that rei would jump at the chance to be with gojo but its simply hilarious to her because if rei really knew how gojo was, that physical attraction could only do so much for someone with a strong personality like he has.
“Yes, but im afraid I have to go” gojo made sure to sound somewhat devastated
“So early?” Hana asked with a bit of concern
“A family emergency” gojo smiled apologetically. He was flat out lying but he had every intention of getting out of this party unnoticed by his father but he figured he should at least have Hana pass the word along if she was asked.
“Oh” Hanas brows furrowed she fights the urge to ask what happened, knowing he wouldnt even tell her with this many people around “If Gojo Sr. asks ill be sure to pass your message along” Hana bowed her head slightly
And with that gojo left with a weight off his shoulders knowing he did his mandatory appearance and got away from sukuna without too much of a hassle.
————
“Okay, but we only have time for one book” you picked up airi from the living room floor, she was practically falling asleep as she was brushing her dolls hair but she insisted that she wasnt too tired for a bedtime story
“I want the one about the worm that eats too much” airi pleaded
“The caterpillar?” You asked, she couldn’t really say caterpillar at the time you bought the book so gojo told her to call it a worm and the name stuck, you really had to fix that soon
You’re not even 4 pages in and airi knocked out, still holding onto the sleeve of your sweater as you knelt on the ground next to her bed. You took in every feature of her peaceful sleeping face, she was so precious and looked so devastatingly like Sukuna, you wonder if he saw her would he figure it out without being told?
You brushed her hair out of her face as you hummed a simple song, you didn’t want to leave her yet but the sound of the front door opening caused you to rush out her room to find satoru holding a bag of takeout leaning against the door taking his tie off. He wasn’t supposed to be back this early and you bit back a comment on how he probably escaped
“Im exhausted” he moved to take his shoes off as you took the food from his hands
“Was it that bad?” You asked
“Not so much, just cant stand my old man” he waved off the subject
You nodded in understanding as you took the takeout to the dining table, megumi had retired to his room hours ago and it wouldn’t surprise you if he actually fell asleep and before you could ask gojo spoke up
“Saw sukuna”
You hummed in response
“He asked about you” gojo reluctantly admitted
Your breath got caught in your chest, quickly recovering because its embarrassing that you feel giddy at the thought of him asking about you like some idiot with a crush “about me or about if we were dating” you snap out of your hopefulness knowing Sukuna probably didn’t really care to know about you but more if you moved on, which hurts you.
“Well about if were dating but” gojo sat down at the table pulling out his food from the bag “I don’t know, I asked him what his intentions were and he told me it wasn’t my business” gojo shrugged
You rolled your eyes “hes a grown man, if he had any intentions besides being petty about the idea that I might’ve actually moved on he should say it”
Gojo could tell the subject touched a nerve with you, there was no winning. You would’ve been unhappy if he didn’t bring sukuna up, thinking he didn’t even ask about you and here you are unhappy that what sukuna did ask was immature. Gojo tries not to laugh at how you seemed to never really change, and he guesses he hasn’t either
————
“Ungrateful children” Gojo Sr. grumbled as he stood next to sukuna “never have them” he continued, swirling the liquid in his glass which by the looks of him wasnt his first drink
Sukuna refrained from rolling his eyes but he was irritated for two reasons, he purposely secluded himself to the corner of the room where he wouldnt be dragged into conversations and the second reason being he didnt care one bit about this old man yet he played along
“I don’t plan on it” sukuna playfully responded
For the duration that hes been in collaboration with the gojos company, sukuna has been more or less working at an angle of trying to get Gojo Sr. to trust him, not for any reason other than it would get under gojos skin to see sukuna being chummy with his dad. That and maybe Gojo Sr. could tell him something useful about you and gojo.
He’d have to know something, yet as time went on sukuna lost hope, seeing as the old man hadn’t mentioned anything at all and seeing how this was probably the last night he’d be around the Gojos, he couldnt bring himself to pretend to care about what the old bastard had to say.
“I don’t understand, he’s getting this successful business I’ve built from the ground up, literally handed to him, and he cant even stay until the end of the event” Gojo Sr. scoffed “all for some ‘family emergency’ which is just a lie”
Sukuna glanced at Gojo sr. he didnt wanna make it clear that this intrigued him considering you were probably who gojo considered family. In the forefront of his mind he was wondering if something had happened to you. Were you okay? he didn’t care for gojos brat but he knows you cared about him, so for your sake he hopes nothing bad actually happened. He doesn't think for a second it involves his brother because yuji wasnt even supposed to be around the fushiguro kid today and if yuji was involved you would contact sukuna... or you should at least.
For someone who swore up and down about maintaining the family image, Gojo Sr. sure did a great job at undoing it in just a few minutes, thanks to a few drinks in his system and some misplaced trust. Sukuna had yet to say anything because for all he knows, Gojo Sr. could possibly get mad if sukuna does choose to say something, even if it was a chance to dunk on gojos character.
“Family this, family that yet those damn kids aren’t even his” Gojo Sr. turned to look sukuna directly in the face who now had a look of interest on his face “he should be more like you— motivated and passionate, hell you even stayed later than him” he dryly laughed as he took another swig of the drink in his hand
“Im sorry, kids?” Sukuna asked, he brushed off the other comment, he needed an elaboration. There was no way there was more than one, it’s just supposed to be fushiguro.
“That whore he lives with is using his no-- MY money” the older white haired bastard took sip of his drink “now my idiot son is raising some kid who isn’t even his” sukuna tries to keep himself composed, hearing you spoken of in such a negative way has him more irritated than any encounter with gojo could.
Sukuna is still convinced this escaped nursing home patient is just confused “i’ve met the kid, he’s well mannered” he tries to frame it in a way that’ll get Gojo Sr. to elaborate
“Not that one… that kid” he waved his hand in the air in a dismissive motion “his dad died years ago” Gojo Sr. shook his head at the memory
Sukuna hoped he wouldn’t elaborate he didn’t care for a back story right now (hes pretty sure he’d already heard it from you anyways). Right now he’s finding out you and gojo might actually have a kid together. He thinks this old man must lying about it not being gojos kid since it seems he doesn’t like you at all. Sukunas too focused on genuinely trying to keep his shit together
“There’s another one” Gojo Sr. bitterly continued “he thinks I’m not aware but I know and I don’t appreciate him being played for a fool its bad for our image and damaging financially” Gojo Sr. doesn’t really realize, through his buzzed state, that hes revealing more than he would had he been sober and it didn’t help that he truly thought positively of sukuna.
Another one? An actual second kid? Whatever else the old man was saying was drowned out by the ringing in sukunas ears. He could feel the sweat building up on his forehead as his heart beat wouldn’t slow down. He swears he feels himself grow light headed. Years of memories flashing in his mind as he accepts the reality that you’re actually with gojo, hell you even have a goddamned kid with him. His mind is racing genuinely questioning if you truly moved on so fast. He really thought he’d get you back but now? That seems like the most unlikely path in this scenario. His mind finally registers the old gas bag next to him is still talking and he catches onto something that he wishes he misheard, for the sake of his sanity
“That whole mess was... 4 years ago. I haven’t heard much about that disgrace of a woman since, but she’s still being a gold digger” Gojo Sr. sighed “I may have found out but my son does a good job at keeping his affairs private, I’ve only met that woman three times”
4 years? sukuna doesn’t want to let himself think about the fact that the timing was weird. Were you cheating on him with gojo? Did you rebound as soon as sukuna broke up with you? Every possibility was running through his mind until a horrifying possibility hits him as if a bucket of ice cold water had been thrown on him. That couldn’t be it… there was no way.
Sukuna thinks back to how the past two weeks yujis been avoiding him in ways he didn’t before. The kid can barely make eye contact and while sukuna initially thought maybe he was just hiding bad grades, was it actually something serious?
Theres no way you had a kid and it was sukunas, he refuses to accept that reality because the you that he knows and loves, would tell him. You wouldn’t keep something like that from him, so sukuna decides to convince himself that the idea of you possibly rebounding with gojo hurt less. He also refuses to accept the idea that you’d cheat, in his mind he creates an elaborate reason that maybe you and gojo had a kid for tax benefits or something along those lines.
Even if yujis awkward and terribly distant behavior was an indication that he’s hiding something and even if the way you no longer looked at sukuna with stars in your eyes, none of that was enough to convince him that you had his child, and decided not to tell him. And even worse, his own brother knew of this and didnt say anything. He rules this idea out of his mind as he doesn’t even realize its become painfully obvious how fast he’s spiraling.
Gojo Sr. finally realized sukuna was no longer paying attention to him “Are you okay there? You look awfully pale”
Sukuna abruptly ended the conversation, excusing himself as he ran to the nearest bathroom, he splashed water over his face and stared at his reflection for longer than he realized. He needs answers, and he needs them now. He knows he’d be able to get something out of yuji, the brat couldn’t lie to save his life, and now that sukuna knew what he needed to ask, he was gonna see what exactly yujis been hiding from him.
Sukuna didn't even remember his drive home, his mind was simply not present. He really truly hopes he’s being unreasonable and piecing together a theory that could very possibly be incorrect it was more than likely he was dead wrong and yet he's never felt so anxious in his life. You having a kid is enough of a shock for him— but it possibly being his? He cant even wrap his head around it. He actually finds himself hoping that its actually gojos, because if you knew… if you knew the kid was sukunas and didn’t tell him. He doesnt even stop to allow a logical thought like adoption or something, no he immediately jumped to conclusions, because when it was you all rationality was thrown out the window.
As sukuna slammed his car door, fumbling with the keys in his hand and struggled with the door knob just long enough that yuji swung the door open with an agitated look on his face — frustrated because he had to pause the movie he was watching when it was at the best part.
But the frantic look in sukunas eyes was enough to have yuji quickly making his way back to the couch
“Wait” sukuna said so quietly yuji would’ve missed it had the house not been dead silent
Yuji turned awkwardly to look at his brother. Yuji was never truly afraid of his brother, he’d always considered him all bark no bite, but there was something about the almost crazed state he was in that made yuji doubt that judgement in this moment. What could possibly have him this frantic? Yuji wondered, it was truly out of character for his brother, he was always composed even in the worst situations. Yujis breathing got heavier as he realized theres exactly one thing— one person, who could have him on edge like this. He’s scared to think of what would come out of sukunas mouth next
Sukuna mumbled your name so quietly, it was enough for yujis to hold his breath as he waited for sukuna to continue “does she have a kid?”
Yujis eyes widened and he took a few steps backwards, his heart was beating so fast he swears you’d be able to hear it thudding. How sukuna found this out was still a complete mystery, yuji swallowed slowly trying to think of words to say but this was not his conversation to have. Did sukuna talk to you? Or Gojo? Yuji genuinely had no words, nor was he ready for this.
“My dad invited sukuna to the companys holiday party tomorrow” gojo spoke with his mouth full of food
You, airi and gojo had gone out to eat while Megumi went bowling with his friends for his birthday. Although you and gojo were a little sad about it, you were both definitely excited at the idea that megumi actually had friends he would willingly hang out with.
“What for?” You asked as you focused on coloring the kids menu with airi, gojo was too hungry to wait and ordered an appetizer that wasn’t appealing to you or airi
“Just a courtesy invite I guess, considering the deal that happened a while ago, I doubt he’ll go though” gojo replied as he looked around the room
“Yeah we’ll see about that” you don’t really think sukuna will pass on the opportunity to be an asshole to gojo
“Do I have permission to be mean to him?” Gojo asked with a sly tone
“Would it even matter if I said you couldn’t?” You joked glancing up at him
“Probably not” gojo retorted taking another bite
You smiled to yourself because you know he would’ve respected whatever you asked of him even if he probably didn’t agree with it
“Who are you talking about mommy?” Airi chimed in
“Just an old friend of mine, baby” you responded as you kissed her head
You and gojo made eye contact from across the table, trying not to laugh at your response. You’re not stupid, you know that eventually she’ll ask about her dad. Maybe she thinks its satoru even though you’ve told her hes her uncle, you’re not sure she truly grasps that concept. You know once she starts school it’ll no longer be easier to avoid the “do I have a dad?” Or “where is my dad?” questions.
You’re aware that you and satoru discussed that he wouldn’t have “stepdad” title but the way he has been present in her life, you wouldn’t be able to blame her. That was a conversation you were dreading to have, and even more so if sukuna did become present in airis life, what would that to your family now? It was a scary thought and maybe what was part of holding you back from telling sukuna. You didn’t want to lose what you have now for someone who probably wouldn’t even stick around. And maybe the smallest tiniest selfish part of you felt like he deserved not knowing, that thought in itself ate you up inside and you felt riddled with guilt that you would deprive airi of a father out of spite.
Airi just hummed in response seemingly losing interest and instead asking when you guys were gonna see megumi
“In a bit he’s with his friends right now” you told her as nice as possible but she still lifted her head from the paper she was coloring with a pout on her face
“Are we gonna have cake?” She asked and you laughed because you figured thats why she was asking
“Yes, we are!” gojo answered “even if megumi doesn’t like sweet stuff, he already told me what flavor to get”
You smiled knowing megumi probably chose that for the sake of airi and gojo (but he’d never admit the gojo part)
“I hope its chocolate” airi whispered as she went back to coloring
“Do you think megumis enjoying himself?” You spoke up changing the subject
Gojo sighed “I hope so, its hard to tell with that kid sometimes”
———
Megumi and yuji had a few more friends from school that they actually got along with, so convincing megumi to do something for his birthday wasn’t the hardest thing to do. Mainly because megumi doesn’t really care for his birthday, he doesn’t think he’s ever really understood the excitement around them. Even if when he was growing up, you and gojo tried to make them fun for him he just couldn’t enjoy it. This applied to when it was someone else’s birthday too, he couldn’t help but feel normal about it. Megumi shakes his head slightly as he realizes he’s too into his own thoughts when its supposed to be his turn, and to his luck (even though he was distracted) he threw a strike that went unnoticed by his friends because they were currently barely learning everything thats been happening in yuji and megumis lives
“Wait, so I’m confused you have an actual niece?” Nobara half shouted over the noise of the bowling alley
Yuji nodded proudly “yup and we almost have the same birthday too”
Nobara was genuinely shocked, sure she hadn’t known yuji for that long but she had heard a few stories about his older brother and truly who would want to be with that man? but even more crazy that the mom of yujis niece was megumis older sister figure (?) Nobara wasn’t too sure how megumi viewed you, but she assumed that would be the best observation on her behalf. Either way the entire situation sounds like a mess and shes honestly shocked they were acting semi-normal at school, if she was in their shoes she would’ve used the chaos as an opportunity to miss a day or two of school.
“And your brother still doesn’t know?” Maki interjected
Yujis smile dropped and his body language changed entirely, he curled in a little on himself and refused to make eye contact before mumbling “well no, not yet”
It was barely loud enough but maki and nobara still heard. Before maki could respond Megumi came back from his turn, “You’re next” Megumi addressed maki as he approached the group but he noticed it had gotten a little awkward, as he figured it would considering the conversation had landed on airi and you about 10 minutes ago. Yuji had truly done a great job at telling their friends about the past few weeks, so naturally they were pretty invested. Not that megumi could blame them, the whole situation sounded like something out of a tv show considering how dramatic it all was.
“Won’t that piss him off?” Nobara asked with an incredulous tone “the fact that you know he has a kid and just didn’t say anything”
Megumi nervously looked at yuji after nobaras comment
“Its not really up to me and I can’t condemn the decision either” yuji sounded a little irritated and maki could tell
“Well its not our place to judge nobara” maki stood up ready for her turn turning to look at megumi and yuji, who both had a displeased look on their faces “but him not knowing might blow up in your guys faces eventually”
Nobara huffed and shrugged “whatever man, it’s not my brother”
Yuji doesn’t know why that stings as much as it does. In his mind he thinks he understands the situation but is it really truly fucked up that he hasn’t told his own brother? Should he have fought to defend sukuna a little bit more? Deep down yuji knows sukuna cares about him but would this screw up their already precarious relationship? And he feels even more guilty knowing this is supposed to be megumis birthday and they’re making it about yujis family issues
“Its fine, we’ll figure it out” megumi spoke up noticing that yuji seemed to have zoned out
After that awkward conversation the rest of the evening went fine and despite his friends antics megumi found himself smiling to himself throughout the day, he didn’t think it was all that bad, but he’d never admit that.
———-
“Maki was too good it wasn’t fair!” yuji exclaimed with a mouthful of cake while recounting the day to you and gojo.
“So you guys had fun?” You asked as you finally joined them at the dinner table, sitting right next to airi
They both nodded but megumi spoke up first “it was fine”
Gojo groaned looking directly at yuji “ignore him, that’s megumi talk for he loved it”
You, gojo and yuji broke out into laughter as megumis face got red
“That doesn’t even make sense” megumi retorted
“It does too” gojo argued
You smiled fondly at the interaction, their arguments never got old to you and you hoped they’d never stop. Airi was hardly talking as she was very focused on enjoying the cake she had been talking about all day, she was hardly talking but laughing plenty as her and gojo kept making silly faces at each other.
As the night went on, you let yourself enjoy it because it all just felt so natural and peaceful. Yet the guilt leaves a bitter taste in every moment nowadays. At this point in time, the idea of telling sukuna seemed less hurtful than hiding airi like this. As you watched Airi attempt to play some car racing game with gojo and Megumi, you let your mind wander to the outcome of sukuna finding out, possibly the most annoying part of this whole situation is how you cant make up your mind.
You decided to busy yourself by cleaning up the plates left from the cake and decide to push sukuna as far out of your mind as possible. You laugh at the exaggerated and fake complaints from Gojo as he claims that he lost (he purposely did bad so that airi wouldn't land in last place, not that she understands the concept but he does it anyways) you wish he’d let her lose so doesn’t expect to win every time but he disagrees. You dont notice that yuji, who decided to skip out on the game, followed you to the kitchen
“Can I ask you something?” Yuji spoke up startling you
You turn around to face him noticing he had an unreadable expression “of course… what’s up?”
“How do you do it?” Yuji asked as he shifted around uncomfortably not making eye contact
You gave him a curious look, waiting for him to continue
“Deal with the guilt” yuji spat out “I understand why you won't tell him, at least I think I do, but how do you deal with the idea that he knows nothing… that airi knows nothing”
You’re taken aback by how blunt he was, feeling yourself fight back tears, its odd how he seemed to know how your conscience was eating you alive the past few weeks. You didnt respond but instead looked down at the plates in your hands, the blue frosting smeared over the plate and a half eaten piece that megumi didn't finish.
Yuji took your silence as a cue to keep talking “I feel awful, every time I think about him finding out I feel a knot in my stomach and” he paused as he swallowed “he might not be the best brother, and maybe” he gestured to you “he wasn’t the best boyfriend in the end, but I don’t know if this is right”
Yuji was taking a risk here knowing this could make you either angry or sad but he hoped you’d understand. Nobara comment from earlier kept replaying in his mind, he couldnt even enjoy the rest of megumis birthday because at the very front of his mind was the idea that this could ruin any progress he hass made with sukuna. Not just that but, if he was in sukunas shoes… he’s not sure how he’d react. In yujis mind, if by any chance sukuna doesn’t care about airi the idea that yuji knew and didn’t tell him would probably still bother him.
You bite the inside of your cheek to stop yourself from crying, you truly wish you didnt cry so much nowadays but ever since you had airi your emotional state as been a bit turbulent. You know deep down yujis not wrong, and hes not telling you this out of malicious intent, but it still stings all the same.
“Im sorry, I really am, it must be harder on you considering you have to face him everyday” you moved to put the plates in the sink “I know, in some sense you’re right, and its been chipping away at my conscience everyday lately”
Yuji looks at you, your faced away from him but you can feel the daggers he’s staring into the back of your head
“Theres nothing I can say to make you feel better about the whole thing, because I put you in a difficult position” you sighed before continuing “all I ask is that you give me a few days okay? Just let me think about it” you turn around to half smile at him, maybe it wouldnt hurt to grab lunch with sukuna and see where he’s at mentally, if its even feasible to drop such a heavy topic.
Yuji breaks out into a laugh of relief “man, I thought you were gonna get pissed at me for that” he rubbed the back of his head with an awkward smile on his face and you find yourself smiling back. He really was such a good kid, and you’re thankful megumi has him as a friend.

“I expect you to have a professional attitude today, satoru” Gojo Sr. spoke through the phone
Satoru rolled his eyes in a way he hoped his father could sense, as he made breakfast “you say that like I don’t usually”
Satoru moved around the kitchen with ease as he brushed off his fathers rant about the holiday party their company was throwing. His mind truly would not be invested in this evening, with the occasional stray thought roaming to how he’d handle a sukuna confrontation including how busy work has been? His fathers lecture was exhausting to say the least.
“It starts at 6” Gojo Sr broke satorus train of thought
“Why so late? Thats ridiculous” satoru pointed out
“Thats not late…”
Satoru pouted on the otherside of the phone call this night was sounding more and more nightmarish with each minute. Yeah this would just be his everyday life in the years to come, and maybe it wasn’t as awful as he makes it out to be considering most clients love him, but his fathers involvement made satoru loathe the very idea of going into work— even if it was literally a party. 10 minutes later, the call ended with some small pointless argument that satoru couldn’t bring himself to care about.
You walked into the kitchen and noticed gojo seemed on edge about something but you didn’t pry, if he wanted to talk about it he’d bring it up.
Satoru was grateful you never expected anything of him but simply just to be himself. He yearned for that growing up and when he could no longer find it in geto, he found solace in your presence. In the back of his mind, the idea of sukuna coming into the picture for airi was something scary. Satoru knew he had no ownership or demanded loyalty of you but he didn’t wanna lose the family he had now, and in some sense he could tell you felt the same way. For so many years in your weakest moments, you both were all each other had and while change is inevitable he wished it wasn’t something he was dreading. It was the elephant in the room that neither you, gojo nor megumi was willingly to address ever since yuji came along.
“So for Christmas, I got airi the doll house she wanted” gojo spoke up
“Satoru…” you shook your head but smiled “thank you but where is that going to fit?” you joked
He shrugged “she’ll probably forget about her old one we’ll just replace it”
You shook your head at his logic, truly a sentence that could come from someone who was spoiled in his childhood
“No, she’ll use both until it breaks or we can at least donate it”
Gojo shrugged in agreement, knowing not to argue with you
“Good luck today” you mumbled as you watched him flip the pancakes in the pan grimacing at the way It looked a little too burnt. Work for him is a touchy subject, that you’ve learned is better left untouched but you don’t want him to think you don’t care
“Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to have the loudest argument possible with sukuna” he turned his head to give you the cheesiest smile possible
“Very funny, Satoru”
Megumi came downstairs shortly after, he looked tired, as expected of someone who never really socializes
"did you have a nice time yesterday?" you asked as you stole bacon from the plate gojo set aside
"wasn't bad" megumi shrugged
"would it kill you to say you had a nice time?" gojo complained
"yes, it would actually" megumi deadpanned
"whatever, did you set your new phone up?" gojo asked, he had gotten megumi a new phone for his birthday (and for Christmas he'd be getting a new gaming console and headphones which gojo was excited to give him)
"yeah actually, thank you" megumi pulled said phone out of his pocket "its bigger than my old one its pretty cool"
you and gojo smiled at each other because that was probably the most enthusiastic you'd ever see megumi about his birthday-- or presents in general
————
The employees started pouring in and the building grew into a lively atmosphere much unlike during the workday, it was something satoru could never get used to. Every year it was the same, he’d spectate the crowd as he prepared to put on his best act. He could fool everyone, except his dad and maybe thats where the innate irritation for nights like these came from.
His rant in his mind was cut off as his dad knocked on his office door telling him to “greet people” in all honesty gojo was going to do that in just a few minutes but now that his father was telling him to he felt compelled to say no.
After gojo begrudgingly left his office, familiar faces greeted him and he always makes sure to reciprocate the same energy at least until he sees sukuna walk through the doors with a smirk on his face and the receptionist, Rei, following behind him. Gojo knows his face changed for a brief moment and he hopes no one noticed, he knows this has to remain professional but what he would do to punch that pink haired idiot in the face.
Gojo pretended to be invested in conversation with some employee he’s not even sure what his name was so as to come off as unbothered. Yet out of the corner of his eye, he saw sukuna approaching him, and the conversation he was in the middle of became more and more distant.
“Gojo” Sukuna interrupted the poor soul who was in the middle of speaking
Gojos smile slightly twitched as he turned to face the voice of the man he knew all to well
“Sukuna” gojo stuck out his hand for a handshake but he had desperately hoped sukuna wouldn’t reciprocate the energy.
And when sukuna met gojo half way the handshake held more weight and tension than any conversation could.
You exhale, blaming the shaking in your voice on the cold air “hey”
As you looked up at him you had to hold your breath when you saw how intensely he was staring at you, it made you anxious. You felt your heart beat begin to grow heavy and loud, it echoed in your ears.
Sukuna searched your face for a reaction, something— anything he just needed to see that look in your eyes again. An embarrassingly large part of him really thought you’d still look at him the same. He couldn’t stop looking at you, nothing and yet everything had changed. For a moment all his thoughts of how he was unable to move on quietly flush out of his mind as he takes in your face for the first time in years.
You felt stuck like a deer in the headlights, his staring felt like it lasted an eternity. You cant say you were any better, you were trying to avoid intense eye contact but you still took in every feature. He was so handsome it made you almost sick, you missed his piercing eyes and his nose, his soft hair that you used to run your hands through. His eyes truly were your favorite color, you wish you could be wrapped in the warmth they reflected even during his coldest of looks you swear you could feel your face warm up just by thinking of it.
He had a slight pink tint over his cheeks and nose and you wonder if it was from the alcohol or the weather, you bet on the weather though because his alcohol tolerance was not low at all. You didn’t care though, it was still cute and you felt your eyes fixate on his lips, it took everything in your power to look away and finally maintain eye contact with him.
Sukuna noticed that you slightly furrowed your brows as if waiting for him to say something and he hadn’t realized just how long he’d been staring
“You finally met the brat” he tried to joke but you just had a disinterested look on your face
“I did, he’s a good kid”
“Did you know?” He needed to know if you truly just didn’t try to see him first
“Know what?” You knew what he was asking but you didnt wanna admit that
“That he was my brother” his voice was already laced with irritation, you have to bite back a smirk
“Yeah, I figured it out the first time I met him” you said with no intention of elaborating
Sukunas eyes slightly narrowed, it’s enough to make him bite the inside of his cheek. In the back of his mind, he’d clung onto the idea that you just didn’t know him and yuji were brothers. He thought he knew you well enough to assume that you’d be the first one to reach out, he thought you’d be more forgiving than this.
He was waiting for you to ask if he knew about you but you weren’t showing any indication of speaking again. He felt his heart beat a little faster trying to cope with the fact that he was starting back at square one with you, maybe even worse as he tried to look at you again but you fixated your gaze on his house
“So you and gojo?”
If you’d been looking at him he would’ve seen the anger that flashed in your eyes, the audacity to even ask about that before asking about you personally. Not even a how are you?
“Not your business, although it seems like you already know I live with him” you sounded bitter and he noticed.
He felt that with that question alone you’d mentally taken 20 steps away from him. He also noted how his question was still not answered. Seriously, why could no one answer this for him?
“Yuji has a loud mouth”
You finally met his eyes again and you slightly squinted as you hummed in response
“Sorry about your grandfather… yuji mentioned he passed a while back” you didn’t want sukuna to think you were trying to be nice but you really did feel bad
Sukuna shrugged “he was sick for a while”
You didn’t know how to continue the conversation after that, it felt so unfamiliar. You felt yourself growing more restless as you tried to think of a way to say bye. You waited years to see him again, thinking it would change something… that maybe things could be different. It hurt knowing you and sukuna would never be who you were all those years ago, and while you know you should be happy about growing as a person, you cant help but be saddened by the fact that you didnt grow alongside him. You unintentionally let out a sigh at your tiresome thoughts, you were shaking because of the weather and your nose started to hurt from how cold it felt but taking note of your discontentment sukuna spoke up
“have you been good?”
Your eyes widened in shock slightly and it made him happy to get some reaction out of you
“Im good” you mumbled out “and you?”
He smirked before answering and it irritated you, you used to love his cocky smirk but now you feel like he shouldn’t even wear it around you
“Im good” he parroted your response and continued to stare at you
“Sorry we have yuji over so much, him and megumi really get along” you changed the subject
Sukuna raised his brow, as if asking “who” and suddenly you felt yourself get hit with nostalgia, you almost lost your composure because it made you want to smile. Sukuna saw the slight quirk of your lips but he could tell you were trying to stop it
“Its fine” it’s not, he actually intended on chewing out gojo, probably try to pretend like gojo was trying to turn yuji against his own brother. But now that its you in front of him he feels as if any sudden movement would scare you away even more so if he showed genuine upset
“Gojos brat has good manners I assume thats your doing” sukuna didn’t really mean this he could see the hatred in the kids eyes every time they saw each other; he just wanted to get you to talk more
“no, he’s just a good kid” you replied somewhat monotone
Although you do know if gojo alone had raised megumi he’d turn out a little different
“How long have you been living with them?” Sukuna was quick to ask
“Shortly after the last time I saw you” you looked him directly in his eyes. He felt as if every ounce of anger you felt was laced in the look you gave him
Sukunas brows furrow slightly, he doesn’t like the idea that he unintentionally ran you into gojos arms after he left you that night. He remembers it like it was yesterday and he hated to think about it.
He keeps hoping that you’ll ask some questions or just talk in general. He didn’t realize how much he missed your voice until now, but you weren’t answering enough for him to really listen to it again
“How long have you been back?” You wanted to kick yourself for asking the second the words left your mouth
“Since july, I got a job out here” he chose to keep out the fact that he’s been to gojos job before and works in somewhat close relation to him
You slowly nodded your head, you also chose to not to say you already knew that. Gojo is not a subject you want to broach with sukuna, he was always irrational about him
All the while your mind couldn’t stop seeing the resemblance between sukuna and airi. You start to wonder if she’d meet him would she find him scary? He’s a huge guy with a constantly mad look on his face. She would definitely hate his inability to have fun.
Would she be able to get sukuna to have fun? you like to imagine how ridiculous he would look trying to be a dad. The look airi gives you when she asks you for anything is always enough to make you heart melt and almost makes you agree to whatever she says. Would sukuna feel the same way? You feel a heavy suffocating pain in your chest at the thought.
You remember sukuna loved cooking and food in general would he think you’re a bad mom for airi being a picky eater? it’s not like that’s something you can control. You quickly scratch that last thought out of your head, what right would he have to be judging you as a parent?
Sukuna notices that the look on your face has changed and you seem to be thinking of something but before he could ask your phone started to ring and he saw how quickly you answered it— gojo was probably on the other side
He watched as you answered the phone with caution, and you were trying to keep your answers vague
“Ill be home soon, i can’t really talk right now” you replied exasperated. Gojo had called to ask if you were okay and that airi didn’t want to sleep because it wasn’t you putting her to bed. You hoped gojo would pick up on the fact that you were answering abruptly for a reason.
“Is sukuna there?” Gojo asked quietly, there would be no other reason for your behavior
Sukuna watched as you slightly turned your head to look at him, the voice on the other line was muffled but you responded while still looking at him “yes, but im gonna wrap it up right now, ill see you at home”
Maybe you added that last part just because you knew sukuna would be annoyed that it was gojo and you were right, his eye twitched and he had a slight frown
“Gojo?” Sukuna asked impatiently
You shrugged in response
“I have to go, sukuna. Tell yuji I said goodnight” you were tired, cold, and wanting to go home to cry. The entire interaction left you feeling empty.
“No goodnight for me?” Sukuna joked but you looked at him with disgust, he didn’t even care because he missed your look of disapproval
“Ill see you around” you mumbled reaching for the car door handle
“Actually” sukuna blurted out, already mentally cursing himself because why would he do that “the brat never answers his phone when he’s out”
You eyed him suspiciously not knowing where he was going with this as he reached his hand into his pocket
He pulled out his phone and you watched as he opened up the contacts app
“For emergencies?” he pushed the phone towards you telling you to add your number
You couldn’t believe the audacity, it actually pissed you off. You scoffed and he looked at you confused. You snatched the phone out of his hand, you’re kind of mad you got a new number recently because you would’ve loved to point out that he blocked your number he could just simply unblock it. You entered your number and left the name section blank
You shoved the phone back in his hand “maybe you can block that one too” you said sarcastically but when you looked back up at sukuna, he had a serious look on his face and you saw him swallow slowly
Sukuna didn’t really have a response to that, he obviously didn’t think you’d completely be okay with him but you’re more angry with him than he realized. He doesn’t want you to leave yet but you seem adamant on going. He wont argue it too much, he was a little cold and he didn’t want to make you more mad.
You watched him seemingly zone out as he was looking down at his phone, he suddenly got quiet. Was the joke too soon? Its basically been 4 years though…
“Bye sukuna” you said quietly and he raised his head to look at you
You gave him a nod before reaching to open your car door, and finally sitting down in the slightly warmer car. You turned on the car and the heater and watched as he still stood next to your car. It was awkward, you didnt want to run his foot over (you briefly entertain the thought though) but he wasnt moving at all he just went back to looking at his phone and you watched as he typed something before you finally honked at him
He snapped his head up at you and saw your annoyed face (he couldn’t take it serious at all) but understanding that you wanted him to move, he stepped onto the sidewalk. He watched as you drove away and felt angry that he didnt say more, but his pride was happy that you gave him your number even if he did say it was for emergencies. He didn’t want to go back inside and deal with yuji who would most definitely ask questions
You drove back home fighting back tears you had to wait, you’ve driven and cried before— big mistake you could barely see anything. You really just wanted to see your baby, your head and heart felt so heavy.
——-
Yuji pretended that he wasn’t staring at you and sukuna from the kitchen window, and when he saw sukuna start to walk back inside he pretended to be grabbing a snack.
Yuji noticed that sukuna seemed to be lost in thought
“how did that go?” Yuji spoke up
“why do you think i would tell you?” sukuna snapped
yuji shrugs “i don’t know just curious”
“you can ask her next time you see them since you’re so happy over there” sukuna didn’t mean to sound so petty about it
“since when do you care” yuji was slightly shocked at his brothers reaction
“i don’t, but dont forget that i’m your brother and your guardian don’t go acting like they’re your family, you’re probably annoying them by being there so much”
yuji feels his heart drop to his stomach, it’s always like sukuna knew what insecurities were running around his head. Even though you made it clear you do want him there, he doesn’t want to forget his place. But he also tries not to let sukunas words get to him, when yuji quite literally has a niece because of you. Yuji wonders how dumb sukuna would feel if knew that.
“i don’t know why it matters, as long as i’m not here right?”
sukuna doesn’t know why that comment has a bite to it. He doesn’t hate yuji in fact right after you he’d place yuji in the “people he cares about” category. A very alarmingly small list, he’s aware but it’s not like anyone else mattered.
Sukuna said nothing else as he headed to his room leaving yuji alone in the kitchen. Yuji would probably ask you if it didn’t feel invasive, you may be kind to him but he’d probably hate to be in your shoes right now.
————
When you arrived home, gojo was reading a book to airi. You could hear her asking him questions from down the hall and it made you smile to yourself when he would answer them.
you only caught the tail end of the story but it was one of airis favorites, one about a mouse who would ask for a cookie but could never just end with having a cookie. You laughed quietly because in your mind you see satoru in that way, one thing always led to another with him.
“hi my love i’m sorry” you entered airis room and knelt down next to her bed
“mommy i want you to sing to me”
“hey i tried that” satoru joked as he closed the book and stood up to put it back in her bookshelf
“you don’t sound good” airi said
satoru gasped dramatically, pretending like that didn’t actually hurt his feelings but it did kind of sting
“airi, that’s mean, saying that kind of stuff hurts peoples feelings remember? Say sorry to satoru” you said as you moved to replace the spot where satoru was sitting
satoru long since learned to stop interjecting when you discipline airi on his behalf but you insist that its needed for her social skills.
you wonder why she tends to be meaner to satoru than anyone else, you try not to laugh thinking that maybe she just inherited it from sukuna (you know that’s not actually possible but it’s a funny thought). The more sensible thought would be she probably sees his immaturity as it being okay to be mean because he never genuinely gets mad.
airi pouted “i’m sorry uncle toru”
“it’s okay airi, next time we’ll get megumi to sing or something” he joked to which airi made an alarmed face
“i only like mommy’s singing, gumi doesn’t know how to sing” to that you and satoru burst out laughing
satoru said goodnight one last time and left the room to get some cookies that were meant as a snack for airi (the book may or may not have anything to do with it) and yes he did get a small cup of milk to go with it. But as he stood in the kitchen with a cookie in hand he could hear your faint singing and maybe he understood why airi didn’t wanna hear him at all. He didn’t sound remotely the same, it was kind of embarrassing.
“goodnight my baby, i’ll see you in the morning” you placed a kiss on airis forehead as she was already looking sleepier than when you walked in the room
You should really try to solve her whole inability to sleep until you say goodnight but for now you allow yourself to feel needed by her. She’s growing up so fast it’s bittersweet and just thinking that she’s gonna turn 4 soon scares you. You stay until she falls asleep, as a few tears stream down your face.
—————
Sukuna couldn’t help but toss and turn after his conversation with you. He tried not to be hurt by the way you looked at him. Yeah, maybe he shouldn’t have opened with asking about gojo, but its eating him alive. He won't lie and say that the little spark in your eyes when you got mad didn’t make him content though, at least it was something.
You didn’t smell the same, you seemed to be wearing a different perfume than the one you used to use and you weren’t wearing the necklace you insisted on wearing everyday. Your hairstyle wasn’t the same and neither was your taste in clothes, granted you looked tired but still it was a version of you he didn’t know. He cant imagine all the little things that you’ve changed and it makes him slightly distressed not knowing. All these changes he didnt witness.
He laments that he didn’t get to hear you talk more, reminiscing on all the times you’d tell him about your day complaining about your shitty co workers. He wonders where you work now and if you ever finished school. Did you date anyone after him? He thinks he knows you well enough to consider that you haven’t moved on either, but the way you acted today made his confidence falter.
His bed felt more empty than usual and his irritation levels were making new records. He had so many words on the tip of his tongue, he wanted to say so much more than he did but he couldn’t bring himself to say it. Even after all this time, you still had such a strange effect on him. He often threw away all common sense when it came to you, even coming off as clingy or needy because he had to be near you. When you were together, he didn't care to think too much about his behavior, because the reward of being with you was worth it but now that he's starting over he feels like he agonizes over every small thought and feeling that pertained to you because he didn't know what to do with it. It wasn't very fun for his pride nor did he feel like it matched his reputation.
Deep down he wanted you to be the one to reach out first, so he would know that you missed him just much and that selfish part of his pride and stubbornness could remain intact. And as much as yuji irritated him he thinks if not for him befriending fushiguro, he might’ve taken years to speak to you.
————
When you come back to the living room you see gojo on the couch pretending to watch a movie but he was really playing some game on his phone waiting to hear what happened with sukuna.
He looked up at you as you sat next to him on the couch he saw that you were crying and he didnt know what to say or do. Sukuna is always a sore subject for you that makes it hard to navigate
“you know after 4 years before he even asks me how i am he asks me if you and me are a thing” you sniffled
Gojo feels himself try not to laugh and waits for you to continue
“he asked me for my number for ‘emergencies’ concerning yuji” you said emergencies in a mocking tone because you know he couldn’t care less about what yuji was doing that much was clear
“did you give it to him?” gojo half whispered
“well he’s kind of right, i couldn’t say no to it he is yujis brother yknow?” you feel like maybe sukuna counted on your conscience to say yes to him
gojo nodded, it wasn’t unreasonable but considering it was sukuna is what made it unreasonable
“how do you feel?” gojo was almost scared as the words left his mouth
“i don’t know. i don’t know who he is anymore, and i’m not the same either” you sighed “i tried hard to be unbothered but i don’t think it worked”
gojo can just imagine you doing the thing you do when your anxious, speaking in a monotone voice while refusing to make eye contact, it was funny to think about in a sense considering you never acted that way with sukuna before
“i thought maybe if i saw him, i’d gain some closure, or clarity. That my gut would tell me if i should let him know about airis existence but the moment i saw him” you paused trying to find the words “i felt nothing but fear”
gojo didn’t understand what you meant by that, had sukuna done something to make you feel unsafe? but before he could ask you answered it for him
“i’m scared because i can’t trust him the same anymore, and maybe i should get over it for airis sake but at the same time-” you stopped mid sentence giving up on trying to justify not telling sukuna
gojo knows you’re doing what you think is best for airi, and before yuji came into the picture bringing sukuna along with him, you never doubted yourself this much
gojo said your name to get you to look at him, your eyes were red like you were crying harder than you let on
“if it wasn’t for yuji would you have ever known he was back?” gojo asked
He didn’t wanna be cruel but he didn’t want you to blame yourself for sukunas cowardice
“no” you mumbled, gojo had that stern look in his eyes that always made you feel as if you were in trouble mainly because he rarely looked at you like that
“don’t let him get to you now... he took advantage of the fact that he didn’t have to reach out first, it was just a matter of time before you went around to his house” you stared at him with widened eyes as he continued “he’s using yuji as an excuse to talk to you, that in itself shows he’s not ready to know about airi”
you bit your bottom lip to stop yourself from speaking up because you know gojo was right... of course he was.
you nodded in agreement silently before you leaned over to hug satoru. you buried your face into his shoulder as you relented and cried a bit more, you couldn’t help it. You just needed to sleep already it was an emotionally turbulent night that you didn’t expect.
Gojo hugged you back hesitantly he could feel your ragged breathing as you silently cried into his shirt. He tried not to think about how you were probably getting snot on it but if it was you, it didn’t matter.
“let’s watch something, yeah?” gojo asked and you only nodded yes in return
——
by the time the movie ended and you finally went to your room it was 12 am as you plugged in your phone to charge you saw a text from an unsaved number you unlocked your phone nervously knowing that it could be no one else but sukuna
“you should bring yuji here at some point, i’m sure he’d have fun” you spoke up whilst laying on top of sukuna, your head on his chest. This was personally your favorite position because you could hear his heart beat and feel his chest rumble when he spoke.
It was supposed to be a date night but it started pouring rain and was simply too cold to be out. So it turned into a movie night with every blanket you had laid on top of the both of you.
He didn’t respond for a few seconds and all you could hear was the muffled voices from the movie as the rain hitting the window became louder yet neither of you bothered to turn up the volume
“eventually but i don’t want to babysit a brat anytime soon” he replied
You don’t know why you feel your heart physically ache, you knew sukuna loved you but he never took you to meet his family nor did he ever bring them into town. You tried not to take it too personal you understood they lived further out and it could be a hassle but you’d think maybe he’d try at some point.
You also think you know nothing about his childhood, he’s only mentioned he doesn’t have parents anymore and that his grandfather and brother is all he had. it felt like no matter what you did or said you couldn’t fully understand him because he never told you anything
“mmmm makes sense how old is he again?” you tried to play off the sadness lingering
“don’t know maybe 8 or 9 right now”
you shot up from his chest “he’s megumis age?”
he just stared at you with an eyebrow raised as if he was asking you who you were talking about
“you do that every time I bring him up just because gojos his guardian” you pouted and rolled your eyes to which he smirked
he leaned forward to kiss your forehead “yeah he’s around the same age”
you went back to laying your head on his chest and started to pick at the loose thread on the blanket you had wrapped around you
“i do want you to meet him someday” he rubbed your back and it shocked you that he even bothered to clarify that for you, he usually just made up for it by being more affectionate with you
you just nodded in response, you didn’t really have any words because you weren’t expecting him to reassure you
Sukuna likes to think he noticed the exact moment you fell asleep because he felt the way your breathing changed. He wrapped his arms around you a little tighter knowing that you were sad.
It wasn’t cause he didn’t love or trust you it was just he didnt quite see a point in telling you about his parents or his grandfather. If it were up to him he’d simply pretend he didn’t have a life before you.
The whole reason he had to move schools was because he had simply fucked up too much where he lived. Getting kicked out of school countless times, narrowly avoiding being arrested and just generally a pain in the ass. His grandfather reached the end of his patience and decided to send sukuna to live with a family friend, uraume. Sukuna hated it at first and swore he’d make uraumes life a living hell but found that maybe it wasn’t so bad— courtesy of you, of course.
His parents were... parents by every technical term. He’s not sure on the details since no one ever told him anything but apparently he was supposed to have a twin, but he didn’t make it during child birth.
Sukuna knows this is what made his mother, kaori, resentful towards him growing up. And his father, jin, well he loved his wife so much that he reflected her behavior. Sukuna grew up neglected in every emotional sense and his other basic needs were barely met and when they were it was with reluctance. His grandfather often stepping into to scold jin about his lack of parenting. Parental love wasn’t something sukuna was graced with and any adult could see that.
He doesn’t talk of them with titles of mom and dad but simply refers to them by their names— he doesn’t think they ever did anything for him to deserve that.
Kaori would look at him with disdain in her eyes and only hugged him on his birthday, but he doesn’t think it was because it was him, but more cause she was mourning. Jin was as withdrawn as a father could be, he was affectionate towards kaori but sukuna speculates that jin probably didn't even want kids.
He wasn’t sure when he stopped crying growing up, he noticed early on that it granted no reactions from his parents so he just trained himself not to. His teachers thought he was freaky and were often scared at his lack of emotion.
And for some reason entirely unknown, kaori and jin decided to have another child. Sukuna thinks it was to replace him or to start over. It didn’t matter to him anyways, kaori passed away due to complications during yujis birth.
Jin took this as an opportunity to abandon Sukuna and yuji not even two years later to no one’s surprise. Leaving the boys in their grandfathers care for the better part of their lives. Sukuna doesn’t know where jin is now or if he’s even alive, he hopes he’s living a miserable life, something befitting of a man like him.
Sukuna doesn’t look back on his past with pity or sadness, in fact he just pretends it didnt happen. It would make no sense to dwell on it and he finds it pointless to even think about it (although anyone could see it obviously had a lasting effect on his behavioral and emotional issues). As far as he was concerned, family wise, all he had to mildly concern himself with was his brother and occasionally his granfather, when he wasn’t getting on sukunas case.
Maybe when yujis older sukuna would bring him around, he has too much of a big mouth right now, he’d surely tell you about their parents. He’s not too worried if you would get along with yuji, much to his chagrin he had to admit anyone who met the brat could never hate him (sukuna thinks they just haven’t spent enough time around the kid).
————
“you guys are almost done with finals!” you said excitedly as you placed airis food in front of her. Everyone was fine with ordering pizza, as celebration for the boys almost being on winter break, but airi hates pizza so you made her something different. This prompted a shocked reaction from yuji, he couldn’t believe she didn’t like pizza he insisted it was one of the best foods ever.
You sat at the table joining airi, satoru, megumi and yuji who were waiting for you to start eating
“yes, thankfully i don’t think i can do another test without my brain melting” yuji joked
“i don’t know they weren’t too bad this time around” megumi shrugged to which yuji responded by rolling his eyes
“Megumi i expect straight A’s or your disowned” satoru sarcastically stated with one finger pointed in the air
“is that a promise?”
And while gojo reacted in the most dramatic way possible airi spoke up before gojo said something dumb again
“can i have some?” she asked yuji and pointed at his pizza
you whipped your head to her shocked that she was asking for a food she didn’t like even more so that she asked yuji.
She had definitely warmed up to him considering he’d been over for dinner almost every night since he found out. She was excited that someone other than gojo would play tea party so enthusiastically with her.
“here baby you can have some of mine” you tore off a piece and put it on her plate but she shook her head
“no i want his”
Yuji looked at you and you looked at him then to gojo and megumi
“and why is that?”
“he said it’s good”
it’s hilarious that she met this kid a few days ago and just cause he’s fun to play with she’s considering eating a food she hates just cause he said it was good
yuji laughed and airi furrowed her brows not understanding what was so funny “sure you can try some” he finally replied
“you don’t have to yuji it’s fine she doesn’t even like it” you told him before he tore off a piece
“no it’s fine are you kidding? if it means she ends up liking pizza it’ll be worth it”
he gave her a small piece and everyone watched as she slowly picked it up, gojo took out his phone to record this momentous occasion— airi not being a picky eater.
She ate the piece and her eyes widened “mommy it’s good!” she smiled and you let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding, you don’t know why it makes you anxious that she might say something rude that would (unintentionally) hurt yujis feelings
she made grabby hands and looked at you “can i have some more?”
“what do you say?” you’re trying to get her to remember her manners more often
“please?” she said hoping that was the right answer
you smiled and gave her a small slice of pizza, to which she ate happily. Megumi even found himself shocked that she was so open to it
“well that’s a new one” gojo nudged your arm as he sent you the video he had just taken
“i’m just glad she didn’t cry” you joked “thank you for letting her have some” you looked to yuji
he nodded in response “is she really that much of a picky eater?”
“you have no idea” megumi mumbled
“right now the only thing she’ll eat is peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches— i don’t get it she can’t only have that” you said kind of desperately you were running out of things to get her to eat
“airi you need to try burgers next” yuji joked but she wasn’t even paying attention she was too busy eating her newfound food
“maybe we can get her to eat something else for megumis birthday” gojo said
“or christmas” megumi added
you noticed yujis mood shifted slightly after the mention of christmas “are you doing anything for christmas yuji?”
he shook his head “nah probably not sukuna treats it like any other day”
You let your mind wander to the holidays you spent with sukuna, sure he was never enthusiastic but he would just do whatever you said you wanted to do in the end.
You laugh to snap yourself back into the moment “to be honest, so do we it’s more just an excuse to buy gifts and eat our favorite foods, you can join us if you want to”
he perked up at your invite “i shouldn’t—“ he cut himself off he knows he should try to spend it with his brother but if he was being honest with himself would sukuna even acknowledge him “do you guys mind?”
“not at all! that’s why i invited you, you’re always welcomed here” you smiled at him
“yeah and we have about 50 other foods we need you to get airi to eat” gojo said opening up his notes app writing down the things airi dislikes that gives everyone the most trouble at dinner
megumi was surprised you invited him but not upset he doesn’t think it would be too bad
“i’d really like that, thank you” yuji smiled
Yuji wouldn’t bring it up if not asked he still feels he’s intruding somehow, it’s still a big change he’s not used to. In the moments he’s talking with all of you and playing with airi he loses himself and has to remind himself that he is really just there by your good will. Even if he was friends with fushiguro at any moment you could decide he cant come around anymore. At least thats how he saw it.
The rest of the dinner went smoothly and afterwards yuji and megumi studied for their final test before yuji announced he had to go home
“I can give you a ride this time, yuji” you smiled at him
Gojo turned to look at you but you just waved him off, you wanted to speak to yuji about how he was doing but you didnt want to pry in front of megumi. You dont want to scare yuji away by being too concerned but you cant help yourself.
———
Sukunas been thinking about what he would say to you when he finally does see you, he isn’t even sure how you would react. He wants you to be happy to see him, he wants to see your smile and hear your laugh. He hasn’t heard it in years and yet it plays in his mind often.
He wants you to look at him with eyes full of love, the way you used to. He swore he’d be able to see every thought in your mind whenever you stared up at him, like you were trying to tell him how much you loved him in any way you could. It irritated him greatly that he was so weak at the thought of speaking to you, its really not who he is, he swears. He washes out the too sweet thoughts of you with the bitter taste of his now warm beer, he took too long to drink it and now he barely wanted it.
He was supposed to be working on paperwork he brought home but instead found his thoughts wandering back to you, as they always do. Its been happening far too much for his taste, zoning out, simply because you were stuck in his head you and his pure hatred for gojo. Every time he pictures you in his mind an image of that white haired bastard just has to pop up and it irritates his soul. Sukunas distaste for gojo wasn't all that prevalent in high school, yes he was annoying but thats how most people saw gojo. It wasn’t until you just had to spend time with gojo and megumi, in sukunas mind there was really no reason other than you wanting to be nice and irked him that gojo got to see that side of you.
He was gonna call it a night and just head to his room but he got a text from yuji saying he’d be coming home soon. Yuji had never really texted him a heads up before so sukuna thought it was strange.
If he was honest yujis behavior had been weird for the past few days. He figured it was the argument about you, but yuji usually recovers from their disagreements pretty fast. Instead, he has has barely been home and when he is, he avoids sukuna, not even greeting him. Sukuna isn’t hurt, truly he never thought he’d see the day Yuji finally stopped talking all the time but he was annoyed that he was being ignored. He may be spending time with you and gojo now but sukuna was still his guardian and older brother, he still needed to have authority.
If yujis on his way home that means he got a ride from gojo most likely and sukuna swears he’ll confront him, about you or about his brother hes not sure yet. Either way he steps outside with his beer in his hand waiting in front of his house to give gojo an earful.
———
“Bye airi! Ill see you next time okay?” Yuji tried to sound as enthusiastic as he could, he wanted airi to think he was cool as ridiculous as it sounded, he really wanted to be a good uncle.
What neither you nor yuji expected was for her to start tearing up as she ran to hug yuji, something she had yet to do. You couldnt contain your smile knowing that airi finally warmed up to him and you caught yujis look of surprise before hugging her back.
Airi looked up at you while wiping her eyes, you were worried she was gonna throw a fit especially because she was tired but she just sniffled before speaking “when?”
“When is he coming back?” You asked her making sure you understood what she was asking
She nodded before you continued “oh I don’t know baby, thats up to him” you bent down to brush her hair out of her face
“I’m not sure when I can but for his birthday i’ll for sure be here!” Yuji told airi as he pointed to where megumi was sitting and she slowly nodded, she understood megumis birthday was soon considering she constantly asked you about it
You asked gojo to put airi to bed for the night but you had a feeling she wouldn't sleep until you tucked her in, but its fine it shouldn’t take too long to drop yuji off.
The first few minutes of the ride were quiet as yuji scrolled through his phone before you spoke up “how are you feeling about everything?”
You know its only been a few days but you still felt you needed to ask, you cant imagine what its been like for yujis conscience
“Ive been okay, im happy about you and airi I really am” he trailed off for a few seconds “its just I cant really look at sukuna the same”
You wanted to tell him thats exactly what you were afraid of but he kept going “not because I can’t tell him about her, but because I find myself not wanting to tell him at all… and sometimes it sucks cause I wanna slap some sense into him but” he shrugged instead of finishing his sentence
“Im sorry yuji” but he only shook his head in response he didn’t think you had anything to apologize for, his irritation was more directed to his brothers immaturity
“Theres something I promised myself that if it happens then I’ll tell sukuna” this caught yujis attention as he turned to look at you “a sincere apology”
Yuji noticed a small smile form on your face before you continued “when we dated I feel like I used to let sukuna get away with things if he upset me because he truly is all bark and no bite and he’d show me his remorse through the stuff he’d do for me, I know it sounds toxic”
Yuji looked at you with slight concern, maybe you were just delusional because he knows sukuna doesn’t really do anything for anybody. And he definitely was not all bark, but maybe his brother was really just that different with you
“If he says sorry for the way we broke up and the way he left me that second time and I feel its sincere then id tell him about airi” you slightly turned your head to look at yuji and he had a hopeful look in his eyes before it quickly changed “I dont want an apology for the break up itself, if its what he wanted I can’t change that but I do know I deserved to know why”
You both knew that sukuna apologizing would be a miracle within itself and maybe you learned to accept it would never happen. Yuji in time would come to accept it too, it all laid on his brothers shoulders.
Yuji has a small part of him that thinks maybe, just maybe you’d be the person sukuna would apologize for.
“He better do it soon” yuji jokingly replied still staring out the window
You laughed as you focused on the road “I know, it may be hard to believe but I don’t want him to miss everything about airis life y’know? I just need to make sure I don’t make the same mistake as I always did”
“Do you still love him?” Yuji quickly spat out and maybe it was too invasive because you stopped smiling
“I think a part of me always will but I’m still in love with a Sukuna that doesn’t exist anymore” it happens, you never meet the same person twice, not even in the same person and it’s what terrified you about eventually speaking to sukuna again, what if he was someone you don't know anymore?
Yuji hummed in response as he noticed that the car pulled into his street and as you parked in the front of his house he felt his heart drop. Sukuna was waiting out front... in the freezing cold weather? It made absolutely no sense yet there he was with an obviously dissatisfied look on his face. Yuji turned to look at you but you already noticed sukuna and he noticed a sadness took over the look in your eyes that he hadn’t seen before.
“Thank you for the talk and the ride, i’ll see you guys soon definitely for fushiguros birthday” he awkwardly smiled
You hadn’t really heard what yuji said because all your attention shifted to sukuna, everything around you became silent and there were so many memories flooding your mind. And worst of all is that he looked so good. You’re not even sure how he managed to get more attractive but he did, his face had changed, like he matured. He also became more buff you felt yourself trying to shove every positive emotion towards him down, you couldn’t forget everything just because he got hotter.
You noticed yuji was still staring at you so you spoke up “yeah, of course! im sorry we’ll see you then, thank you for coming over today” you smiled as he got out of the car
You watched as yuji approached sukuna and as he did sukuna finally looked at who was driving the car. You maybe imagined it but you swore you saw his eyes slightly widen, and your breath hitched as you and sukuna made eye contact. It felt like an eternity and you didn’t want to tear your eyes away. You felt the sting of tears in your eyes as you began to chew on your lip trying to ground yourself. Your breathing began to speed up as well, and you couldn't believe you were actually dreading seeing him after years of thinking if you saw him one last time you'd get some closure. You didnt exactly prepare for this moment nor did you think it would come so soon, gojo never said anything about seeing sukuna whenever he'd occasionally drop yuji off.
Sukuna said something to yuji but you’re not sure what, and handed yuji the beer he had been drinking. Yuji headed inside the house as sukuna started to walk to the car and you could hear your heart beat in your ears. It’s been years theres no way he’s gonna see you like this, in your lazy outfit with no make up, and worst of all with airis carseat in the back. You were tempted to start driving away but maybe you spent too much time thinking because before you knew it sukuna was knocking on the drivers side window.
You slowly opened the car door as little as you could as you stepped out, if you rolled down the window he’d have a more clear view of airis area in your backseat. The food crumbs from earlier that day still on the seat, and her beanie left behind. There would be no hiding that from him.
Sukuna backed away from the opening door and crossed his arms, he didn’t think he’d see you so soon. The second he saw that it was you who dropped yuji off he spoke without thinking and told yuji to go inside. He should’ve just gone inside himself and not even bothered to approach you but the moment he saw you he felt himself automatically moving.
As you stepped out of the car he noticed you seemed scared. Why would you be scared? Since when was that a look you ever wore around him, it made his eye twitch slightly. He tries to convince himself that maybe you're just tense because you're nervous. And you looked tired, a tired he hadn’t seen before that didn’t seem entirely like physical exhaustion.
And worst of all, when you finally lifted your head to really look up at him he thinks any love you had for him may have died. There wasn’t a single emotion or reaction in your eyes, your eyes that usually told him everything were suddenly unreadable.
He cleared his throat before speaking “hey”
You exhale, blaming the shaking in your voice on the cold air “hey”
