your past self was doing the best it could. You know more now, and in the future, you’ll know even more! You grow each day! Don’t hate the past versions of you for not knowing what you know now.
Happy pride month specifically to folks on the asexual and aromantic spectrum who oftentimes feel isolated and left out of the conversation. You belong here as much as the rest of us and I hope that you are all loved in a way that is comforting to you.

"unbecoming" is such a great word. bro that shit was so rude you no longer Are
His name hasn’t even finished leaving your mouth when he appears in front of you, like he’s been anticipating your arrival. You smile, and Xiao glances away, though you detect a subtle lift in the corner of his lip.
“I got your letter,” you explain. “How is the bird doing? Can I see it?”
Xiao nods. He leads you up to the blue-tiled roof of Wangshu Inn, at the intersection where the tree twines together with the building. A small nest of twigs, dead leaves and feathers has been tucked into the eaves. In its centre sits a round little finch, looking quite snug.
“Here.”
You crouch down to inspect the bird closer. Like Xiao said, it seems to have injured its wing: instead of tucking its left wing into its side like its right one, the finch nests with its left wing outstretched slightly. Noticing your presence, the bird shifts in the nest and chirps.
“Have you chosen a name for it yet?” Xiao asks, crouching down beside you.
“About that… I was thinking we could name it together.”
“Together?”
“Yeah. I give it one character of its name, and you give it the other. Thinking of connections, it would make more sense if we both contribute, right?”
“That… is a sound idea,” he said. “Which character will you choose?”
“I thought I would keep it simple. Tiān, for sky. So this little fella can strive for the heavens when it recovers.”
Xiao’s eyes linger on the bird in a prolonged moment of deliberation. At length, he says, “Then I will choose yá, for border or margin.”
You nod. “Oh, so something like, ‘the sky’s the limit’, or travelling to the ends of the earth?”
“In a way.” His eyelids drop. “This phrase—tiān yá—appears in an ancient poem.”
The hint of bashfulness in his voice intrigues you. “How does the poem go?” you ask.
“The first few lines are, hăi shàng shēng míng yuè, tiān yá gòng cĭ shí. The bright moon rises over the sea; though we are apart, we share this moment.” His eyes dart over to you as he speaks, laced with a tenderness which makes warmth unfurl inside you.
“That’s beautiful, Xiao,” you say, smiling. “And a perfect name. Thank you for choosing it with me.” He dips his head, and you pretend not to notice the red flush blooming on the tips of his ears.
A few days later, the time comes to release the finch, Tianya, back into the wild. You and Xiao meet at the balcony of Wangshu Inn and go to collect the little creature from its—well, you’ve concluded that it’s a ‘her’—nest. You lift her gently in your palms, careful not to startle her. Tianya is not skittish and allows you to hold her, all the while regarding you with round black eyes. As Xiao watches you raise the bird in your cupped hands, something in his expression is… not exactly forlorn, but struck through with a tinge of melancholy, maybe regret. You can guess why: he cared for this bird, but because of his karmic debt, he can’t get close to her lest he harm her in some way. Even around humans, he’s like this. You’ve lost count of the amount of times that same look comes into his eyes when he’s overlooking Liyue Harbour, as if he wants nothing more than to reach out to those below, but can’t.
An idea strikes you. You carefully tip Tianya into one hand, and you close the other around Xiao’s own hand. He looks at you in surprise as you begin channeling a stream of energy into him through the shared contact. His karmic debt isn’t the same as abyssal energy, but maybe your purification will still have some effect in reducing its potency. “Try holding her.”
In fact, Xiao doesn’t need to do anything. It’s like Tianya can sense something has changed, because she quickly hops off your fingers and flutters into his free hand. Xiao’s eyes widen. The two of them, adeptus and bird, share a long look. Then there’s a flurry of wings, and Tianya flies off into the evening sky. Xiao’s gaze lingers on her retreating shape for a while, until even you can’t see her shape against the sky anymore.
“Something’s on your mind,” you note.
“I am worried for her,” he admits after a moment. “The world is a dangerous place, especially for creatures such as she.”
“She might be stronger than you think,” you reply. “She knew to come here. To come to you.”
His eyes fall. “Perhaps you are right.”
Silence stretches between you, holding you together in unspoken thought. The sky darkens into dusk, and then night. In the distance, a round moon rises, bright like a coin.
You take it upon yourself to disturb the quiet. There’s something you still want to say to him. “By the way, in your message… That ‘affinity’ you mentioned. What do you mean by it?”
Xiao frowns. “I do not understand.”
“As in, would it be a mistake on my part if I thought it sounded a lot like you’re inviting me to have a child with you?”
Crimson engulfs his face. “W-what?” Xiao splutters.
“Sorry, I phrased that badly. Not have a child with you. But saying Tianya is ‘born of our affinity’ doesn’t seem to have many alternative ways of understanding it.”
The poor yaksha, an ancient and dignified defender of Liyue, is lost for words. You wonder whether you’ve perhaps been a little too forward with him. Eventually, he collects himself. He mumbles, “I had not thought of it like that, but…”
A grin sneaks onto your face. “But?”
“I suppose…” His eyes fix on a spot which is determinedly not your face. “It is not an inaccurate way of interpreting what I meant.”
You take a step closer to him. “And what does that make our connection, then? Or maybe I should say, what do you want it to be?”
“I—” He makes the beginnings of a few words, but can’t get any out. You exhale, something halfway between a laugh and a sigh.
“It’s been five years, Xiao. I guess what I’m saying is… If you want our connection to be a bit more like this”—you step forward and press your lips to his cheek—“then that’s what I’d like it to be, too.”
Xiao stares at you for a long, uninterrupted second. Okay, now you’re really worried you’ve broken him. Slowly, his gloved fingers come up to brush the area your lips touched. He looks down at his hand, then back up at you. He takes a step closer, and another, stopping when your noses almost touch. At this proximity you can feel the warmth emanating from his skin. You find that your heart has leapt into your throat, where it’s racing so hard you struggle to breathe. Xiao’s gold eyes drop to your mouth, rise again to your eyes. “This… this is a good connection,” he murmurs. His hand comes up to touch your cheek, then to hold it.
You smile. “Then we should keep it,” you whisper, and close the remaining distance.

Author's note:
The poem referenced by the bird's name (characters are 天涯) is an actual poem by Zhang Jiuling, written in the Tang Dynasty, with the title often translated as 'Looking at the Moon and Thinking of One Afar'. It's about longing for your loved ones, so, uh... yeah. Nice choice Xiao. Very subtle.
