does it ever fuck you up when hozier says "i slithered here from eden just to sit outside your door" because it implies he left eden for a mortal and not even a mortal who he finds himself worthy of being with but just to sit outside this person's door. he didn't leave eden as an act of like eloping with a reciprocating partner he just left because sitting outside their house is better than heaven even if they don't care about or notice him and he's content with just that. fuck
you can respect and admire and even *gasp* like celebrities without stanning them
i like plenty of celebrities. i like them because they're pretty, i like them because they make good music, i like them because they act well, i like them because they make me laugh and smile and i like them because they provide me with joy and entertainment.
but i never, not for a second, pretend to know a celebrity. they are strangers. they are not people i know. they are not people i trust.
at any point, someone i admire can do a shitty thing, and that sucks. it sucks because you want the people you admire to be better than that. but if they do a shitty thing, it is NOT your fucking obligation to defend them or help them or rationalize it.
celebrities are people, and you're totally allowed to admire and respect people. but when people do shitty things, it's not your job to leap to their defense.
we should really talk about Foreigner’s God by Hozier more its such an emotionally devastating song its a lamentation of the systemic destruction of Irish culture under English colonial rule but it also expresses a universal grief that every culture that’s been lost to colonialism can connect to the lyric “all that i’ve been taught and every word i’ve got is foreign to me” reflects so much yearning and loss Foreigner’s God is easily the most underrated Hozier song and is undoubtedly one of his best

“But the Wages”
Although many contend
You may find hope ascend
To mark just how everything changes
Whether the temperature highs
Or the sea level rising
It’s all going up but the wages
And murdered reporters
And talk of hard borders
Sky-bound as a heavenly choir
Or the stock price in Boeing
The screams of the dying
Or the skies over Yemen last night
It’s all going up but the wages
And maybe it’s time
It’s all going up but the wages
And maybe it’s time
Don’t mention the rent
Or the money that’s spent
Keeping the banks in good health
Or ridiculous claims
Or the level of blame
Pointed to anything else
And preachy musicians
And those stuck in prison
With scarcely enough for a blunt
Or the pressure of blood
That new hotel in the hood
With an oligarch’s name on the front
It’s all going up but the wages
And maybe it’s time
It’s all going up but the wages
And maybe it’s time
It’s all going up with the bump in the heating bills
Even though the city’s on fire
It’s all going up but the wages
And maybe it’s time
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
Higher and higher and higher
It’s all going up but the wages
And maybe it’s time
It’s all going up but the wages
And maybe it’s time
It’s all going up with the bump in the heating bills
Even though the city’s on fire
It’s all going up but the wages
And maybe it’s time
