She was pleased when he responded to her words with a smirk of his own, and a faintly satisfied glimmer shone in her eyes. Perhaps this wouldn't be too bad, after all.

Waving a hand to dismiss her assistant, she turned to give Aramis her full attention.

"Come, sit with me. If we're going to be spending a lot of time together, I'd like to get to know you first. Are you married?"

"No, Your Grace... I have yet to find a woman who would be willing to put up with me for such a long period of time. I am a hopeless romantic, I admit. I would only wish to marry once and for life. I imagine it is not so simple for you as a Queen."

Out of all the lands she could have been sent to, Narnia was both the most fascinating and terrifying. It was like no other place she had ever visited. Not least because of the ruling sibling monarchs, but also the talking beasts. She had only been in Cair Paravel for a couple of days, but she wondered if she would ever get used to it.

There was a knock to the door of her chambers, and her lips parted in surprise as her betrothed stood in the doorway. They'd not had a moment alone since her arrival, what with the many important people she had to meet and all the wedding preparations, and she fell into a deep bow.

"Your Majesty," she smiled, rather shyly.

Anne had been here for a couple of days but everything had been so busy that they had not been alone for a single moment, much to Edmund's frustration. He decided it was time for that to change.

"Princess." He smiled, suddenly feeling awkward as she bowed to him. "Please, don't do that." Edmund rushed forward and pulled her upright.

"Have you plans for this day?" He asked, unaware they were still holding hands.

Her face contorted with discomfort and a faintly pained sigh escaped her as she gazed across at the hill in question. In truth, it wasn't far, and usually Anne thrived on horseback...but not when she had mere weeks until she was due to meet the babe in her stomach.

"Alright," she reluctantly agreed, and she allowed herself to rest slightly back against Aramis' chest - her lips curving upwards just slightly as he soothingly held her hand. "But I must rest soon, unless you wish to meet your son earlier than planned." There were no ears that would hear her scandalous admittance - any that mattered were likely no longer living, regardless.

"You do not know it is a son." Aramis pressed a kiss to the soft column of her neck, suddenly aware of the thudding of his heart in his chest.

"It could be France's first ruling Queen."

He fell in and out of consciousness; colours blurred as people rushed to and fro in front of him, and he was vaguely aware of being lifted into a vehicle of some kind. Was it a helicopter? The next thing he's cognizant of are the faint beeps of machinery and the characteristic, clinically clean smell of a hospital.

As his eyes flicker open, and immediately fall shut again, he felt fingers squeezing his hand and he stubbornly fought against the heaviness of his eyelids.

"Mary," he breathed, as he blinked her into view. "You're here," he took a pained, effortful breath. "You were right...about - ah - everything." He was sure they've supplied him with a generous amount of morphine, but even speaking caused a considerable amount of pain.

❝ 𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐘 ate or slept in the last three days as she remained at Cenred's side as if stuck by invisible glue. It had been horrendous to watch as he was rolled away to the theatre rooms with no one willing to give her any answers because she wasn't family.

A few quick calls to her father had quickly fixed that!

Mary's exhaustion was beginning to get the better of her in the bright hospital room where she was curled up in the cosy chair when the voice rang brightly in her ears.

"Oh, Cen." She staggered to stand, taking his free hand into her own and clinging to it desperately, tears prickling at her eyes. "I never left, Cenred, and of course I was right. I'm always right, haven't you figured that out by now?" Mary managed a small laugh, purely for his benefit.

She grabbed at one of his hands, cradling it between both of hers and pressing a surprisingly tender kiss to his fingertips. "Stay still," she warned him, as her eyes were immediately drawn to the crimson stain that erupted on the crisp, white bandage at his movement.

"Who did this to you?" she demanded, her eyes flashed with her barely concealed fury. She would personally make them suffer. Lord, her heart was throbbing strangely in her chest as she gazed down at him and - bizarrely - she felt the prickle of tears forming at the corner of her eyes. What was wrong with her? She never cried.

"I should hope so too," she swallowed back her emotion, "I don't pay you to lay around in bed all day," she tried to joke, with a weak attempt at a smile, before she glanced back up at the physicians. "How badly is he injured?"

The potion given to him before Cenra entered now began to work its way into his system and his eyes began to drift shut while he mumbled incoherently.

"Mose dit to affer fun her to to."

"My Queen, he has been given milk of valeria for what we must do next. He will not remember as we pull the poison from the wound before it circulates around his body."

Aramis gripped at the Queen's hands, eyes suddenly wide and wild. Teeth bared at her and a few faint gasps came from parted lips. It was a brave fight against the powerful sedative.

"Morg gauze."

He smirked faintly at her clever deduction, unable to stop himself from inclining his chin and kissing away her pout. "He didn't want me to tell you," he admitted, "but of course he'd come to me, right? We're the only ones who actually know what a relationship is. I'll only be gone for a couple of hours."

Despite only being a few years older, she still referred to Steve as a boy. "I hope Steve knows that he's doing to me." Mary pressed the back of her hand to her forehead, gripped tightly to a nearby chair and sighed loudly. "I am being left. How will I ever survive?!"
