Personality, Mannerisms, ect:
He's shown to be rather polite and friendly, using this to gain the players' trust. It’s likely a facade seeing how quickly he switches up to threatening us once Officer Duckman shows up or when he’s refused something
He’s seemingly shown to be an at least somewhat competent manipulator, he uses flattery and praises to get closer to the player so he can get what he wants (coffee, favours ect.).
He refers to the player as a “friend” quite persistently (like literally every other sentence oh my god bruh) pretty much since the first encounter with him. He dosn’t do this to any other characters, examples we have are the Ratthew interactions and the fact Harlow never brings this little “quirk” of his up when we ask him about Barney
Observations:
I find the choice of the assets used for his model very interesting, the moustache being the Roblox Limited “Master of Disguise Mustache” and his hat being the (also limited) “Coffee House Intellectual Imposter”:
The description of the moustache states: “See, once you put on the mustache, no one recognizes you. Unless you already had one, everyone remembers a guy with two mustaches.” which might imply his ‘stache is FAKE and that he’s a moustache FRAUD (take this with a grain of salt tho)
The description of his hat goes: “You like to sit in coffee houses and attempt to impress random other customers with your faux-intellectualism. You pronounce Goethe like "Go-eth". You order lattes made with free trade soy milk. You pretend to like poetry accompanied by bongos. You are everything that is wrong with this country.” This might further imply the way he presents himself to us as a player is a persona, a facade he puts on to appear the way he does. We could also take this at face value and just say he’s a jackass faux intellectual when it comes to ordering coffee in coffee places.
Harlow mentions him dropping a book titled “Advanced Quantum Mechanics For Geniuses”. Harlow says this might imply him to be smarter than he seems but knowing Barney carrying a book like that could totally be a preformative action- Personally I prefer to take Harlow’s speculation at face value though, it seems to be what the developers had in mind for Barney.
Harlow also mentions him as usually seemingly not present in the here and now, “day dreaming like he’s not really there”. I don’t have a comment or speculation about this one that wouldn’t be a head canon so i’ll probably say a bit more about this under the hc section
Despite hinting at harm with his threats if sold out to the police or refused he never actually harms the player for whatever reason.
QUESTIONS:
WHY does he ask us for a picture? :
he is not fully aware of his anomalous status and wants to get a picture taken to check a suspicion (he might not own a phone since he’s on the run)
he for some reason wants to reveal himself as an anomaly to us- This is kinda dumber than the explanation above but not out of the question
Why does Barney ask for a scalpel? :
he needs a secondary weapon to his knife for whatever reason
the scalpel IS the knife we see later on but the model is different because the devs overlooked it idk 😭💔
Why doesn't Barney ever actually harm the player despite threatening to do so?
Maybe he’s aware he’d somehow be at a disadvantage while in a fight with the player and his threats are a bluff?
genuinely no idea besides this because i find it unlikely that he actually sees us as a friend (especially when refused or ratted out to the police)

HEADCANONS:
He doesn't actually like coffee all that much, he says how much he likes coffee sometimes performatively but in reality he only drinks it to “self medicate” to keep what’s left of his sanity.
He used to be a college professor before getting infected by an anomaly. To be more specific, a physics professor.
he was always a manipulative individual, just didn’t use it as maliciously before becoming an anomaly
his moustache is FAKEEEE (this could be canon but i’m putting it here anyways)
