How Blacked is your culture?
The Netflix show Dear White People, which I urgently recommend to all my followers, features an incident where a white fraternity hosts a blackface party that encourages attendees to dress up as “stereotypical black people”. This naturally ruffles a few feathers, but one of the black main characters succinctly observes the actual motivation behind the slightly racist theme:
They spend millions of dollars on their lips, their tans, their asses, Kanye tickets because they want to be like us.
And they got to be for a night.
Truth that is easily confirmed on Instagram. White women with more money than curves tend to aspire to this beauty standard now:
It’s the “I wish my daddy was Ivorian, but he isn’t and it’s going to drain my trust fund” look that suits any modern white girl of means.
Beauty standards aside for a moment, what’s the highest-grossing superhero movie? Black Panther; it certainly had the greatest impact on the general culture, too. Black Lives Matter not only continues to go strong in America and keeps offending delicate right-wingers during football games, but has branched out to Europe, making it one of the most successful political movements in recent history. How many white girls have felt the strong urge to kneel for Colin Kaepernick?
Fashion-wise, people are now paying top dollar to look a little more ghetto than they are. This would be even more laudable if the proceeds went to a reparations fund, but all in good time I suppose.
The most popular musicians of 2018? Basically a gallery of black rappers, whitebois who want to be black rappers and of course Taylor Swift. Who, let’s be real here, finally needs to take the plunge and shoot that Blacked scene she’s been low-key angling for.
In contrast, white culture is rather dead. It still exists; it’s just not particularly alive. Take a look at any nationalist tumblr for evidence. Greek statues, viking boats, old buildings; all briefly fascinating I’m sure, but it doesn’t really animate anyone.
The sad violins of European high culture continue to fade into obscurity while white heads are filled with the stories and concerns of black artists and activists and white hips are gyrating to the lively beat of African drums.
But there’s no need to feel bad about that at all. Let’s face it, my fellow Caucasians: Africans look better than us, they’re more fun to be around, their cultural memes are much more intuitively attractive than ours and they actually have powerful stories to tell that make our middle-class problems look embarrassingly petty.
It’s their world now and tomorrow belongs to black; all we need to do is sit back and enjoy the spectacle of white society twerking, moaning and mixing towards a brighter (or rather darker) future.
