     That is a difficult question. In order to answer, Zenyatta must first find a name for what he’s feeling — meditation would help, perhaps, but he hardly has the time for that at the start of a conversation he isn’t sure he wants to have. It’s such a simple question — is he upset? — and yet Zenyatta finds himself at a loss for words. He remains silent where he’s knelt over the flowerbed, fingers still buried in the earth from his task of delicately uprooting the weeds for fear of them choking the other flowers.

     Is he upset?

     Their first fight had been a mere three days ago, and each passing moment since was spent in taut, tense silence or, if necessary, clipped, controlled words. Now, though, the silence has become unbearable, a noose around his neck, a clipper at his wires, and finally, finally, Zenyatta breaks the deafening silence with a sigh, pulling his hands from the dirt and brushing them absently against his pants.

     “It is hard to be certain,” he replies, avoiding Mondatta’s gaze as though allergic to it. Anger is a tight knot in his throat, and below it swims the pit of guilt in the cavity of his stomach — metaphorically, of course — and Zenyatta finds himself aching, aching, aching.

     He doesn’t like fighting with Mondatta.

     “I suppose I just wish circumstances were different.”
