Naruto’s Gift to Boruto (Naruto Shinden)

Earlier that day, while out with Himawari, Naruto makes a stop at Tenten’s weapon shop, “Ningu Tententen”. She has a special parent-child kunai for sale. It’s a kunai with blades attached at both ends of the handle. One end is long and thin. The other end is round like a fountain pen. Although this end is short, the tip is sharp and shines.
“……I still don’t see why it’s called parent-child.” -Naruto
“The longer blade is the parent, and the shorter blade is the child. See, is not like a parent and child?” -Tenten
Naruto buys the parent-child kunai.
Excerpt from pg.62-65, dialogue and narrative are translated in full:
“Onii-chaaan! Dinnerrr! Papa bought hamburgers! It’s already getting dark! How long are you gonna stay in bed!”
Himawari called for her older brother from downstairs.
The door creaked as Boruto opened it, and sleepily answered.
“Ahh… mhnn! Welcome hoo……me. So he came home, huh? Can you believe that? Haha. Alright. You got ‘Papa’ to buy it? That’s right, this too! Also this, and that, and that too……" (*)
It appears Hinata just came home as well. Tonight, for the first time in a long time, we’re going to have dinner together as a family.
Naruto was on the living room sofa, dozing off, as he listens to Himawari’s cheerful voice.
This was supposed to be a day where he could sit back and relax. He reflected back on the busy day that passed. Though he had no time to rest at all, he’d be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy it. This was how you’re supposed to spend "Parent-Child Day”.
Suddenly, Naruto’s eyes opened. He seemed to have fallen asleep without knowing, and didn’t realize that right next to him, was Boruto.
Startled, Naruto froze on the sofa, and then turned to Boruto.
“Yesterday…… sorry about that.”
Boruto held his hands behind his head, and discontentedly murmured.
“It’s fine. Who cares about that, ‘ttebasa.”
He doesn’t seem to be angry that I couldn’t make it home the other day. Maybe he’s cranky from sleeping in all day. Or could it be…
Perhaps, it’s—Naruto turned and looked towards the front. He could hear the sound of Himawari’s voice as she’s showing off to Hinata what she did today; and she’s still going at it.
“Boruto, did you also wanted to go somewhere with Dad?”
Looking upset, Boruto turns away.
“I don’t know, 'ttebasa! I just… it’s just… I wanted a hamburger……” (*)
“The bag, isn’t it still there?”
When I pointed to the Thunder Burger bag on the table, Boruto looked and froze.
His mouth was flapping, repeatedly opening and closing, like a goldfish. Was he looking for another excuse?*
Naruto noticed that Boruto had something hidden in his hand behind his head. A flyer. Just like Himawari this morning, it was crumpled in his hand.
He got a peek at the name of the store—“Ningu Tententen”—
Naruto understands now, and with a wry smile, brought his hand to his pocket.
“Actually, games are probably better… Thunder Scroll, was it? I don’t really know……”
He takes out a long and thin packet, and hands it to Boruto.
“A present, dattebayo. Since just a hamburger won’t do.”
While tilting his head, Boruto starting unwrapping it—
A kunai with blades at each end, it was shiny and brand-new.
A smile lit up on Boruto’s face, but instantly, his lips dropped with a sour look, reverting back to his sulky attitude. He put the wrapping back on the kunai, and abruptly pulls back his heel.
However, as he left, I heard him softly murmuring, “……thanks.”
His response, too, was softly spoken.
He again lets out a wry smile as he sees his son, whom isn’t honest with himself, take off. Naruto then sinks deeply back into the sofa.
