Lupin fandom doesn’t really emphasize enough how FUNNY Goemon is. In the manga he literally went from being big scary murderous samurai to just popping in on Lupin’s doorstep being all “hi I live with you now!”. In the anime he and Lupin just had a nice sit down and laughed off the fact that he tried to kill him and cut his vintage Benz in half. He knows how to drive the Fiat, but doesn’t know how to open a text message. He thinks sandwiches are an exotic food and cried when he saw the Mona Lisa. I love you Goemon.

modern lupin could be a dad. miyazaki lupin would briefly get it in his head to retire to be a dad but would probably turn away at the last second and make sure the kid is taken care of from afar. part 3 lupin could be a dad but in the sense that the child would be an indestructible slapstick cartoon creature and lupin would love and cherish it as he throws it at his enemies. early part 1 lupin has way too much ego to be a dad. part 2 or mamo lupin would invent entirely new neuroses for a child to develop and they'd be studied in prestigious psychology journals for years to come

on that note, it never ceases to amaze me that Mamo managed to strike the perfect balance of "absolute clusterfuck" and "grounded examination of character relationships" on the very first try and they never really recaptured that again in decades of ensuing TV, movies, etc. there's all this bombastic scifi fantasy horror Everything that is very much at the forefront, but somehow the dynamics between the Lupin crew manage to ultimately be the focus. that's what makes it successful.

imo all of the weakest Lupin specials invert this order of operations and that's why they fail. they can have the most elaborate creative plots, settings, new characters etc., but if you leave the core cast eating crumbs and barely speaking to each other more than absolutely necessary to progress the story then it sucks. Mamo was perfect and it was the first animated Lupin movie ever. insane.
