tbh it’s very difficult to explain mara without sounding like i’m exaggerating, and i don’t want to do that because the truth is already enough.

she is, quite easily, one of the best people in this rpc, not in a loud, attention-demanding way, not in a way that needs to be constantly proven or performed, but in the quiet, consistent, almost infuriating way that just is. you don’t question it. you don’t debate it. you just notice, over time, that everything feels steadier when she’s there. there’s something about her presence that changes the shape of a space. conversations feel easier, lighter, more intentional. people soften around her without even realizing they’re doing it. and it’s not because she tries to be anything, it’s because she doesn’t. she shows up as herself, fully, honestly, without calculation, and somehow that ends up being exactly what everyone else needs. she’s always been kind in a way that isn’t performative. thoughtful in a way that isn’t forced. she remembers things, the small things, the important things, and she carries them with a kind of quiet care that makes you feel seen without ever feeling exposed. she has this instinct for people that i don’t think can be taught. she just understands when to be there, when to listen, when to make you laugh, when to let something sit.

and she’s funny, which i feel like doesn’t get said enough. not in a try-hard way, not in a way that pulls focus, but in these perfectly timed, almost effortless moments that make everything feel less heavy. she has this ability to cut through tension without dismissing it, to make things feel manageable again. writing with her, being around her in any capacity, honestly, never feels like work. it feels natural, like something that flows instead of something you have to force into place. she brings out better ideas, better scenes, better versions of people, and she does it without ever making it about herself. and i think what i admire most about her is that she doesn’t need to take up space in order to matter. she just does. her presence is enough. her voice is enough.

the paddock empties slowly, like something reluctant to let go of itself. engines have gone quiet, the roar reduced to memory, but it lingers everywhere: in the air, in her chest, in the way her hands still feel faintly unsteady even hours later. clarissa does not rush through it. she never does. there is something about the aftermath she has come to understand, a softness that settles over everything once the noise is gone, like the world exhaling. she walks ahead of cassian at first, helmet long since gone, hair loosened by the day, though not entirely, she has never quite been careless, even when she pretends to be. her pace is unhurried, almost deliberate, as though the race has not demanded anything from her at all. ❝ you didn’t look impressed, ❞ she says without turning, her voice light, almost thoughtful, as if she is remarking on the weather rather than him. ❝ i couldn’t decide if that was because i drove badly … or because you expected more. ❞ she has already shed the parts of herself that belong to the track, the helmet, the gloves, the practiced composure expected of her when cameras are near; though there is always something that remains . there is a way people look at her after, a kind of brightness in their attention, as if she is still moving at that same impossible speed, even when she is only walking. ❝ you were very still during the last lap,” she says, almost absently, as though she is remembering it for herself rather than offering it to him. her voice is softer now, stripped of the sharp edge it carries on the radio, on the track. ❝ i could hear you over the radio. ❞

The paddock is quieting around them as the remnants of the day begin to fold in on themselves, but his attention does not drift to any of it. It remains fixed, precisely where it has been since the final lap. “Has anyone told you that you measure everything?” he says at last, his voice low, composed, carrying easily through the softened air between them. It is not a criticism. It never sounds like one, even when it is. “Performance, reactions, even the way people look at you when you step out of the car.” A brief pause. “And now you are measuring me.” There is something faintly amused in it, though it never reaches his expression. He studies the way she moves instead, the absence of urgency, the deliberate ease she allows herself once the race is over, as though the violence of it never quite touches her. He has always found that the most interesting part. “You did not drive badly,” Cassian continues, almost absently, as if dismissing the possibility entirely rather than entertaining it. “If you had, you would already know. You'd never need to ask.” His gaze sharpens slightly, though his tone does not. “And I do not expect more than what you are already capable of.” A beat. “I expect you to deliver it.” He slows slightly as they reach their table, sliding into the seat and smoothing up his sunglasses. “When you are driving like that, I do not need to be impressed.” His gaze lingers on her, her. The girl that brought him riches and fame. His masterpiece. “I need to know it is sustainable.”

“You move through the garage like it belongs to you,” he says at last, voice even, almost conversational, as if this were an observation made in passing rather than something chosen. “People adjust when you enter. They slow down, sometimes they correct themselves.” A faint pause, his attention sharpening just slightly. “It is useful. It keeps things from breaking in ways that are difficult to repair.” Cassian fingers tap once, lightly, against the surface of the desk before stilling again. There is nothing restless in the motion. Everything about him remains controlled, deliberate, contained. “And yet,” he continues, leaning back just enough to study him properly now, “there are things beginning to slip.” He doesn't raise his voice to Elias, Cassian has learned how to command respect without needing to yell for it. “Sector two, for example. The tire response, the timing on entry....small inconsistencies, the kind no one else would notice because they are too busy watching her win.” A faint shift of his expression, not quite a smile, not quite anything at all. “I notice.” His gaze does not leave Elias. “She doesn't make mistakes like that,” Cassian says, more quietly now, though the weight of it lands heavier for it. There is something almost clinical in the way he speaks of her, but it does not quite hide the undercurrent beneath it. Not to someone like Elias. Not to someone who has been watching as long as he has. He rises then, unhurried, crossing the room with the same quiet precision that defines everything he does. He stops a short distance from Elias, close enough to make the space between them feel intentional. “You have been with her longer than anyone here,” he says, tone shifting just slightly, not softer, but more pointed. “Long enough to know the difference between pressure and decline.” He lets the words settle, a pause for anger. “Which makes this your responsibility before it becomes mine.” His gaze flicks briefly toward the glass wall, toward the distant outline of the track, before returning just as steadily. “I invest in outcomes, Elias. In consistency. In control.” A faint tilt of his head, studying him now with something quieter, more deliberate. “And she is the most valuable thing this team has. And I do not tolerate instability in what belongs to me.”
