I'm out of Excuses, So I'm Staring at the Bed.
They were bad at this. Like two teenagers on the cusp of puberty, seeing the attractiveness in the other for the first time. Unable to voice it. Unable to understand it. A deep tension lingering in the air between them. Keeping them at a fine distance. Taunting them with heartbreaking desire.
You had to be careful, gentle, slow. One slip and a raging, vengeful rush of emotions would wash them out. It had stepped in before. And Terra could feel in working around the edges of the room. Pushing panic at them. Waiting for one of them to trip up, unconcerned of who first. Though in fairness, it was usual her. Reckless and brash. Knees shaking at the force she held beck with.
"….Hi.."
A voice unlike her own. Soft. And almost timid. The way you would speak to a young deer that wondered into your front yard. And just like with any skid-ish animal, she made no movements. Stark still. Even her eyes didn’t seem to need to blink as much. Or maybe it was the fear he would vanish the second they closed
"Would you…ho…..do you wanna come in?"
So what if he already was? She was inviting Thad to stay. But, acting as though he hadn’t been caught sneaking in. It seemed in her mind, a fair compromise.
The impulse to flicker inside the room at the speed of a tachyon enveloped him. He pushed it down, slid it under the hum that deafened everything. He tried to shake it off. Had to shake this off. Terra was here. Terra was talking to him. This was happening. His hand flashed to his hair where he pretended at pushing it back behind his ear. A nervous laugh nearly erupted from his suddenly dry throat, but he stopped it short just as it began. His motions blinked this way and that and even Thad had to wonder what on Earth he was fucking doing.
He was in the room. Just four feet away from her. Wait, when did that happen? He was discombobulated. His processing speed was lagging at least a few seconds behind his actions. His brain was folding in on itself trying to keep up. Hadn't he just been trying to sneak through here without her attention? He should be running. He owed her better than that. He should be running. He was already in the room.
"Hey." His voice sounded a hell of a lot more even than he was feeling. There was still a dull pulsing at the top of his spine. He wet his tongue and it lessened. He should be running.
"Long time no see." That sounded ridiculous. His eyes darted over her form, scrambling to memorize her features again. Her appearance had faded in his memories and he had to drink it all in again. He might forget it again. Later, after he'd run. He owed her better than that.
He should be running.
