In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, Josh is joining this year's #asianreadathon hosted by booktuber, “Read With Cindy”.

There are 5 different challenges that you can combine or finish individually, but each book read must be from an author of a different ethnicity to count towards the challenge:

1. Read any book written by an Asian author.

2. Read any book featuring an Asian protagonist.

3. Read any book featuring an Asian author in your favorite genre.

4. Read any nonfiction book written by an Asian author.

5. Read any book written by an asian author that is not U.S. centric.

Josh's Book Recommendation 📚

Channel Miller survived one of the most widely publicized sexual assaults in recent memory, but you are more likely to know the name of her assailant, Brock Turner, than you are to know hers.

In her memoir, “Know My Name”, Channel shifts the narrative away from centering Brock, by walking us through her journey navigating the American justice system in the wake of surviving a sexual assault.

Often harrowing, and always insightful, Channel’s examination of trauma and the ways our communities fail victims is a powerful and necessary wake up call.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

"Everything has two histories. Especially in the South"

When Bree is accepted to an Early College program at her mother’s Alma Matter she encounters a secret society of magic users that may be responsible for her mother’s death. The twist? The so called, Order of The Round Table, are descendants of King Arthur and his Knights.

I cannot say enough great things about Legendborn. It has easily become my favorite Urban Fantasy novel. I’ve been nothing short of obsessed since picking it up. Tracy Deonn uses a fresh reimagining of Arthurian Legend to build a story that explores the complexity of grief, intergenerational trauma, and racial identity in america with loads of fantastic, casual representation across the spectrum of gender and sexual identities.

Winner of the Coretta Scott King Award and recently nominated for a Hugo.

"Growing up, I never had an interest in books, and the books that were assigned to me at school never really caught my attention.

There was one book that did peak my interest that I was told to read in 7th grade, and that became my favorite, but it was the only book I would read.

I never understood this quote until now.

The world went dark last year, and was put into rest mode, and everyone had to stay in there homes for a lot longer most would be used to, isolated from each other. But, thanks to technology, I was able to stay in touch with my friends.

One day, I was asked to read a book alongside two of those friends, and soon enough, two more joined, and our little book club was started. My first thought at the start was, 'Will these books have movies? I’ll watch those.'

But I gave it a try.

And I found I had been reading all the wrong books. Now I'm learning more about what I love. I'm learning more about what brings me joy, and finding the stories that speak to me, outside of just movies and tv.

There’s a whole new world that I get to explore, and it took me a long time to get here, and I'm gonna make sure the adventures last even longer."

Last year was a mess, but it was also a time where old friendships got reignited into something new, something brighter.

Our little found family has kept us together through times of self-doubt and sadness, and with unwavering love and support for new opportunities and growth.

We will never stop firing each other up; to be the best versions of ourselves, through and through.

And I wish that kind of friendship for each and every one of you reading this. ❤

The first book this club read together, before our shenanigans were put in front of the camera, has become the foundation for what we love about literature.

We all have that one book that we read for the first time, and at the end, you instantly just want to read it again and again.

It leaves your feelings on another level. When someone asks, "What's your favorite book?" it's the first one that's always at the tip of your tongue.

And when you meet someone that loves the same books as you, it's a complete sense of bliss that overtakes you, the kind experienced when you find a kindred spirit.
