This is heartbreaking. Mohammed Swierh is a father of 3 children, struggling to live in the poor conditions of Gaza due to the war. He was forced to get a job at a mining company, barely able to get basic provisions for his gorgeous family. I may not have much say in the matter of a ceasefire, but that doesn’t mean I won’t do my best to help the people struggling in these conditions at the moment. What are your opinions on Owen's mental illnesses and how the fandom treats them?

Okay this is something I have a lot of thoughts on, so get ready for a longpost!  I want to start out by saying that I’m not a mental health professional.  I worked with a counseling center as a mental health advocate for four years and it’s something that I’m very passionate about, but I’m by no means an expert. 

I think that for the most part, this is a fandom that’s really excellent with their treatment of mental health.  Jess does a great job with its portrayal and with discussion, which definitely helps.

So, Owen.  I think one of the most important aspects is that everything he does is a conscious, lucid decision, and that’s something readers seem to be good with remembering.  One thing that can make me uncomfortable is pathologizing his illnesses.  Not to say you can’t have thoughts on mental health of a character – I certainly do! – but pathologizing character traits is a slippery slope.  I feel like there’s an easy slip from theorizing about illnesses to assigning them as character traits.  It’s very easy to trivialize mental health issues into character quirks when talking about them this way, and even easier to set them up as a scapegoat for the reason that he’s so awful. 

The horror genre has a pretty rocky relationship with mental health – it loves to use mental illness as both the source of horror and as an explanation for it – someone’s crazy, how scary; or someone’s crazy, that’s why they kill people.  In terms of violence, people with mental illnesses are actually far more likely to be victims of it than to carry it out, especially self-inflicted violence.  It’s come a long way, but mental health is still massively stigmatized, especially the ‘scarier’ ones – psychosis, schizophrenia, personality disorders in general.  Those don’t get quite the same sympathetic treatment that some of the ‘’’’’’’tamer’’’’’’ more common ones do.  When they are discussed, they tend to be glamorized and sensationalized. 

As far as actual specifics, I’ve seen a lot of people speculate in terms of a schizoaffective disorder.  Personally, I have thoughts in regards to antisocial personality disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, along with all their comorbid effects and symptoms.  Of course, any speculation is to be taken with a grain of salt – especially when it comes to diagnosing a minor, since schizophrenia and ASPD can’t be formally diagnosed until 18. 

I think he’s been dealt a shitty hand in terms of both nature and nurture, but those are just circumstances.  Yes, he is absolutely mentally ill with violent compulsions.  He has disorganized thoughts and delusions.  BUT, the acts of violence are all completely conscious choices.  Apart from anything that can be safely blamed on being a ravenous corpse, everything terrible and harmful he does is a lucid choice.  He’s self-aware (no pun intended) and very pleased with himself.  As far as mental illness goes, that’s not his only trait.  It’s very important in his grand scheme, but he’s a full person.  And that full person is terrible.  He’s sick, yes, but also fully chosen to become the little monster he is.  He’s sick, but more significantly, he’s a bad person.

tldr: he’s mentally ill, and he’s also a terrible person.  These are two very discrete things.  Speculation is a slippery slope and should be handled with care, especially since none of  us are professionals.
