Jess looked at the girlâs phone, unsure of why she hesitated when she did. Making friends was relatively easy for her, after all, being an extrovert had itâs extra-perks, but this almost felt too easy. Was this what finding a soul mate in a friend felt like? Jess tried to squash down the excitement in her stomach, reducing it to little bubbles in her fingers and toes instead. Trying to appear casual about the exchange, Jess shrugged it off to the wind a second later and snatched up the cell to punch in her number. With a grin, she put herself under Jess: Second Coolest Person Ever. Satisfied with a devil emoji thrown in there, she handed the cell back with a wide grin, âGod, even your name sounds cool. Life is so unfair.â Jess sighed, gesturing at Isabella.
âMy life is basically a living meme, okay, and not the good kind so donât overestimate me.â Jess laughed, shaking her head at herself and the unfortunate situations she got herself into without even trying. When it came down to it though, she wasnât so much a klutz or habitually stupid like some comical sidekick to a pop-cult classic⊠but that being said, she was a magnet for radical gestures, plot twists, and unfortunate consequences. Boring definitely didnât suit her or her lifestyle, and Jess wondered if that would bother Isabella. After all, some people minded.
âWell hey, if you end up getting one make sure to tell me and use me as your what-not-to-do inspiration,â Jess gave a lazy grin, looking at the other brunette curiously. âYeah, well, West Hollow kind of has that effect on people. If itâs not finding some weird way to turn your life into an episode of Bold And The Beautiful with a Twist or whatever â youâre bound to go missing in the woods sooner or later.â She joked, âSeriously though, watch your back. This place⊠it can be kind of unforgiving on people.â Jess told her new friend, feeling a moment of sobriety through all the shared laughter and dark jokes. Perking up though when Isabella said she worked at the campground, Jess couldnât believe her luck. If anything weird ever happened there with the witches or the wolves or the fairies even â surely Isabella would have heard about it.
âThatâs so dope, Iâm going to come visit you on one of my days off. I havenât been to the campground in ages, I remember it being the bomb when we were kidsâŠâ Jess remembered before sucking in a breath and recalling the details of her earliest childhood West Hollow mystery. âOh, god, I donât know, we were like⊠fourteen, maybe? Fifteen at max. It was for this stupid school camp we had to go to and the teachers were all on us about you know, staying in the designated campground and not wandering off, etcetera etcetera⊠Spoiler alert, rules drive me crazy so I got my best friend at the time and told him we had to check out some of the other cabins and stuff after everyone went to bed. Another friend of mine had said something about that kid who had died down by the lake back, I donât know, in like the sixties?â She trailed off, waiting to see if Isabella had heard of the story.
Isabella grinned - the woman had an excellent sense of humor. She didnât want to get overly excited either, over making a new friend (who seemed pretty awesome in every way, so far), but a feeling of something like belonging - the same feeling she felt when she found the pack - washed over her. âYour name is cool enough.â She assured the girl, rolling her eyes a bit, âIâd almost love to chuck my last name back to my dickwad parents and just be Isabella - the last nameless wonder.âÂ
Letting out a loud laugh, the werewolf glanced over, almost shaking her head in approval at the womanâs comment. âA living meme. I have never heard anyone refer to themselves like that, and Iâve got to say - thatâs the best fucking thing I think Iâve ever heard in my damn life. Iâm totally stealing it. Iâll end it with as copyrighted by Jess - second coolest person ever.â She couldnât help but feel a little jealous - this girl had lived what sounded like a very interesting life and up until recently, Isabellaâs life had been bland. Her parents controlled so much of what she did, and mediocrity wasnât made for her. âCall me for your next wild living meme adventure.â She grinned, narrowing her eyes playfully at the woman, as if it were a threat.
She shook her head, âNope, nope, gotta make all the stupid mistakes for myself. I mean, if I decide to get devil horns on my forehead, then... maybe I will regret saying that, but it would definitely be cool to have until Iâm old as fuck.â She paused, thinking if I make to be old. Living life on the edge had its ups and downs. âWhatâs your tattoo of?â She couldnât remember - had the other told her? âIt does, but... honestly, more people need a little bit of life on the edge. And, sure, thereâs always negatives with that, like the potential for an early demise or some crazy attack... but we only live once, not to sound like a living YOLO or anything.â Nothing was worse than going through life just living through the motions, never experiencing anything incredible or anything horrible. Being at a constant neutral made her feel as if life had no meaning, and finally, she had found hers. But she did take her friendâs advice to heart, because Isabella could be pretty reckless, âThanks, though. Us short girls definitely have to be a little bit more careful than the rest.â
As the girl trailed off, Isabella thought, trying to pinpoint the specific story in her head. Certainly it had to have been something off - something that might seem a little bit strange to the human eye, but she couldnât pull it to the front of her mind. And, the girlâs answer might help Isabella pinpoint if the woman was human or if there was something extra to her. If she had a little supernatural blood running through her veins. Or if she even knew about them. âNo, I donât think Iâve heard that once since Iâve moved... sorry to make you blabber on about something that people here have probably known forever.â
