NYFW - SS18 Favourite’s...
New York Fashion week kicked off with designers pulling exceptional pieces and collections out on to the catwalks. There were many I found to be relevant and iconic... sharing some here.
Marchesa Spring/Summer 2018 Ready-To-Wear Collection
The gorgeous collection had elements of glamour and style with the darker colour scheme reminding me of something from past royalty. I love the structured yet effortless way the fabrics are fused, combined with classic cuts giving the sexy somewhat fairytale appeal.
Jeremy Scott Spring/Summer 2018 Ready-To-Wear Collection
The incredible collection from Jeremy Scott proved to incorporate new elements and trends to bright and functional pieces that inspire the ‘ready-to-wear’ vibe. Graphic prints and high lace up boots combined with colour and camo makes for a iconic and unique collection that has taken to be one of my favourites.

High Chroma
S/S 17 colours are in and WGSN have revealed that pink is fading and high chroma is taking over. The insider explains that new colours are arising, ready for people to emerge in change. The summer will see a rise in blue as a core colour as well as purple leading an importance.
The infusion of bright hues and mellow shades will ‘celebrate our current obsession with art and videos’ and high chroma purples will see the neon trends light up the colour palettes of wardrobes. The summer vibes will release a fun interpretation of the saturated colours with key season pieces that achieve high light intensity to override the pink.
Christian Dior Resort 2018
This year, Dior’s Resort collection for 2018 took a Western turn with beautiful garments inspired by the country and location. The runway itself was set in a nature reserve that had a desert feeling to it where the sunset added a delicate touch to enhance both the scenery and the catwalk vibes. The mountains in the background gave it a natural backdrop, complementing the garments perfectly.
As for the garments, they all had distinct qualities and each brought a new adaption to the western mood. There was a fairly limited colour palette, with natural, earthy tones that created the most impact along with some brighter reds and oranges to link to the desert setting. A major standout feature were the patterns on the fabrics. Each are individual and complement the culture and venue. Personally, this was one of my favourite collections from Dior and the scenery added an impactful touch to the show. I loved how everything was natural and raw, with the models hair left undone and the large hats and accessories adding simplicity and style.
Aerate - Fragrance Project
Aerate Candles was the chosen brand name that our group went with for our fragrance project. Our aim was to develop our big idea into a final brand launch, explaining our message and how this consumer driven product will be beneficial within the market.
We began by researching into relevant issues that are around at the moment which stand out and could possibly be explored further. We decided on the toxic air warning that was issued by London’s Mayor in January 2017. Since then, there have been lots of concern about the levels of pollution in London with many twitter accounts and newspaper articles attempting to arise information regarding the rise in toxic air. They have warned people to be aware of the amount within the air and ways in which we can help prevent harm. From these insights, we chose to think of a way that a fragrance can improve these standards for city residents.
‘A candle which acts as an open window alternative for working professionals living in toxic air environments’.
Our idea will explore ways in which we can reduce the amount of air pollution within the homes of working professionals along with leaving behind a clean and fresh scent that will make people feel more comfortable and safe. We chose to also use this opportunity as a way to raise more awareness on the issue as well as possibly bringing in a collaboration with a charity that relates to breathing or lung problems.
Our consumer was considered carefully, and we chose to market the candles at residents of large cities mainly London where the problem is at its peak. The age range will be 24-34 as we thought that this was an appropriate target as these people will typically have more disposable income and less likely to have settled down without families. Our secondary target would be consumers that are concerned about their health who wish to help contribute towards cleaner air in their homes or workspace.
From this idea, came a photoshoot where we brainstormed ways in which we could communicate our message using a few props. Smoke was a major contributor towards our photoshoot as we wanted to portray the pollution as smoke which was essentially being ‘sucked up’ by the candle to portray the level of pollution decreasing. From this idea, came a final print advertisement that would be both a promotional method for Aerate candles and a form of awareness.
With this final ad, we wanted to communicate a simple design, which reflected our main design message in hopes that it would appeal to our desired target consumer. We wanted to have a standard candle to show what our product is and have the smoke resembling the pollution. We also chose to add some colour by adding the ocean image via post production to show the scent.
Kendall Jenner followed in her sister’s Met Gala footsteps by baring more than she wore on the 2017 red carpet.

Met Gala. Theme - Rei Kawakubo
The Met Gala 2017 had a huge range of influential celebrities within the fashion world that show off their beautiful garments with pride and confidence when getting photographed. A favourite that always stands out for me is Kendall Jenner. With her constant persona dominating the industry at the moment, her Met Ball outfits never disappoint to accentuate her assets and prove that she is constantly renowned for the stunning brands that she wears.
Other celebrities had beautiful adaptations of the theme with another favourite of mine being Lily-Rose Depp wearing a fuchsia Chanel dress. This took a sentimental take on Kawakubo by introducing her favourite colour within the ball’s guest list and expressing this in a classy way.
Photographs
Whilst analysing these images, I found that they conveyed a variation of emotions and narratives which helped to contribute to the overall interpretation that we receive when looking into the photographs.
Venetia Scott: PRISCILLA (1969), BY JOSEPH SZABO.
This image conveys a strong narrative and gives me the impression that this young girl is lost and possible fed up with the life she has, with the cigarette showing that she is stressed and longing for a change. It proves her daily struggle with the blurred out background suggesting that she may be homeless. This also ties in with her oversized trousers that she may have just found on the floor. She releases a ‘carefree’ attitude by her positioning.
Theo Wenner: NUDE WITH STOCKINGS BU04 (2001), BY THOMAS RUFF
Again, this is a very strong image which exposes a lot whilst still maintaining some modesty with the blur. This particular image reminds me of a Sarah Moon photograph due to the lack of focus and blur, however its much more bright with more vivid colour.
Roberto Cavalli:
This fashion photograph is very strong when conveying colour and tone with the bright yellow and flesh tones. It conveys a distinctive message and accentuates the clothes from the designer very effectively.
Lace It Up
Lace-up details are a trend that I am continuously seeing in high street shops and online for spring and summer 2017. Through my own research with garments that I've seen, I have discovered that there are many variations and adaptions to the trend and designers and brands have incorporated it in different ways.
Personally, I like the way that using a little or a lot of lace-up detail brings a sense of femininity and delicacy to any item of clothing. The most common places that the detail is imbedded is at the cleavage of a top, at the hem of trousers, lace-up skirts and lace-up corsets are becoming more and more popular since the likes of Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian was seen sporting them over oversized t-shirts.
I believe that this trend has formed from attempting to bring back the silhouette shape and to add an interesting and feminine touch to any garment. They also show a somewhat sexy appeal, with some revealing skin. The trend itself has completely taken over social media and is showing everywhere on many celebrities and instantly showing up on homepage’s of high-street fashion websites. It has also been spotted continuously on the catwalk with Gucci and Isabel Marant sporting some lace-up designs. I believe that this trend can only get more popular and is currently growing more popular in wardrobes this spring.
Dior FW17 details
by Nick DeLieto
I love this look of Dior details by Nick DeLieto with the all black attire and striking gold accents from the bag, accentuate the accessory and give a stylish influence for FW17. The rings are also a huge part of the look as they help to accompany the look and give a rougher, more edgy take in comparison to the flow, delicate skirt.
Chanel’s Gabrielle Bag
Chanel have used Cara Delevingne as their celebrity endorsement to promote their new bag named ‘Gabrielle’. They have created an innovative campaign with a cartoon pop-art themed video to accompany. The way in which the video has been made is a clever and effective way to bring in a new adaptation of the relationship between a woman and her bag. This connection has been carefully explored in a way that proves that her bag is her main accessory and partner. The way in which she skates down the street gives the message of the bag being a true lifestyle item with connections to her busy life.
The video has Cara skating around the busy streets in a colourful and fun way, reflecting the characteristics of the bag itself. Personally, I love the effects of the watercolour paint strokes in a messy and ‘careless’ way, which gives a new attempt to connect with the consumer. The colour palette is very similar to the bags, with the chosen paint shades from the surrounding buildings and locations keeping within the block colours of red, blue and yellow. The music is kept fresh and sporty with a relevant and uplifting vibe.
