How is it being trans in China these days? I worked there in a small city years ago when people saw me as a butch woman (and literally no one cared), I'm a little uncertain what to expect trying to go now as an androgynous guy (updated my passport, gotta reapply for new visa) + bringing T through customs, do you have any insight? so when I came out to my (chinese, mainlander) mom in 2021/2022, she did Not take it so well lol, but actually, the people who brought her around to the idea were her other Chinese friends (and tbh, I think our personal family dynamic really complicated things in her acceptance journey). Now, people who knew me pre-transition are still a little squirrelly about referring to me with male terms of address (i.e. they don’t call me Gege, they’ll just call me Nico), but so far everyone has been very chill about it. I also don’t really pass as male right now (purposely, because i don’t believe in the gender binary and my preferred gender expression is essentially “beautiful man that looks like a woman”) and so I get a lot of people just assuming I’m a woman or asking me if I’m a boy or a girl, and when that happens I’ll just answer that I’m a boy and that’s the end of it! I will also say, I’ve never tried to bring testosterone into the country, and I’m in a somewhat larger city (my family lives in Guiyang, which is quite close to Chongqing and that’s a city that is known for its LGBT population), so that might influence it. but to sum up, people are super chill with androgynous men/my flavor of transgenderism - like really and truly nobody really gives a fuck lol.
