Why couldn't the commission solve the grandfather paradox? They would have known Harlan was the cause. They could have just sent someone to stop him from killing the Hargreeves mothers.
I have just added this to my very long list of timeline questions.
Okay, wait, wait, wait. If the grandfather paradox is destroying all the timelines, even the Commission, then the only timeline that would be left is the one Reggie makes after Hotel Oblivion. Then what are all the timelines the subway is connected to? How did they survive the kugelblitz?
Possible theory: the Commission is wrong about how many timelines there are, and there are timelines beyond their reach that also aren't destroyed by the kugelblitz. But if so, then the Cleanse shouldn't affect them either.
So, I conclude there are timelines that are not destroyed by the Cleanse in season 4 (which is my headcanon).
Or else someone at the studio did not hire a time travel consultant.
P.S. To make matters even more confusing, Herb distinctly says "the timeline is collapsing," which implies only a single timeline. Yet if another Five founded the Commission, clearly there's more than one. I request a five-minute interview with Founder Five just to get this all sorted out.

So much for their "loyalty." Unimpressed.
Where did Five get the money to buy a tailor in the lobby? Did they cut the scene where the Umbrellas rob the bank?
Is Lila taking a bath in the men's shvitz? Is that why Five says: “What are you doing in here?”
Viktor’s description of the grandfather paradox is spot-on. But what about the universe in season 4? How can Allison be with Ray and have Claire at the same time? Is that universe paradox-proof?
I also don't quite understand why Five says to Allison: “This is our home, accept it.” Once he spots the grandfather paradox, he should rush to get the briefcase and get them all out of the timeline before the universe collapses. It’s weird that he doesn’t, and I guess has to do with how badly he feels about killing the board, but it's still weird.
Since we’re on season 3, there’s an opinion I wish to share with you all.
I didn’t like Harlan being the reason the Umbrellas didn’t exist and the reason the grandfather paradox happened.
Him having powers is cool, but the sole reason for the paradox seemed too much.
I say this because I had a theory. Reading the comics, some of the Annie’s were tossed aside or abandoned to die. We never meet the other of the 43 children.
Wouldn’t it be more mysterious or shocking that either Reginald killed them as to not have them exist in order for hotel oblivion to be their solution? Or that they actually died din natural disasters like getting dumped or killed in accidents?
That’s my opinion.

I think the third consecutive apocalypse plot was unnecessary, as were the reasons for it. It's starting to feel cheap, and in Season 4 it's downright far-fetched. I agree with one fan who said they could have done without the apocalypse after Season 1, and Season 3 could have worked without the Kugelblitz. Marcus could have simply disappeared by accident using the briefcase, and then the Commission would have temporarily disabled the briefcases while they dealt with the new management. Besides, the Umbrella-Sparrow confrontation is interesting in its own right, without killing off unnecessary characters every episode.
I really hate that Harlan, who they all saved, becomes some kind of villain and most of them don't care about killing him even though they know he's Sissy's kid and Viktor took care of him and they all saw him just a few days before. They just treat him as expendable and it makes me mad.
I do think we should have met or at least heard about more of the 43 children. (In the Sparrow universe it's fewer children, I think--why exactly is that? The marigold got tired?). If Reginald tried to kill them, I hope some of them fought back.
Wait, Five got the newspaper clippings so he does know who his mother is! I wonder if he looks her up when he's at the CIA.
My inexplicably favorite lines in the Umbrella Academy are about birds.
"We've been replaced by a bunch of blobs and cubes and birds and shit."
"The sun is shining. Birds are doing whatever the hell birds do."
Also, on the topic of birds, Lila using Fei's powers is very cool.
Poor Five really is Odysseus. "We are in the clear,” huh? Never any rest for the wanderer. But does anyone think that Jayme did Five a big favor without realizing it? I mean, he got to see Delores in living color. I bet he remembers that fondly.

Question: when Dave meets Klaus in Vietnam, does he know him from when Klaus came to the paint store etc., and just not tell him? Or is it a different timeline that Dave is headed into when he gets on the bus and looks around for Klaus, and we don't really know what will happen to him?
Bonus question: Who is Luther calling in the last sequence before they leave?
Five dropping his gun in front of the Middle Swede is a moment I'd forgotten and it's really an extraordinary moment because Five makes a choice that isn't about his family's survival or saving the world but is about him putting down violence as a tool. And I think part of it is because he saw Diego talk Lila down instead of killing her, and part of it is that he realizes after hearing Lila's story that the killing he's done is always personal to someone. And it's also because he knows he and the Swede were both used by the Handler and they're not really enemies. And maybe it's also because he's thought he was going to die so many times in the hour before this happens and he's thinking about what kind of person he wants to be. It's just a great moment.
The only way I can understand Old Five being sent to Five's siblings through the time portal is if that constitutes yet another timeline, and the one in which Five and his siblings come back and find the Sparrows is a different timeline. In which case there's a whole other story about Old Five and his siblings waiting to be written.

Herb tsking at the mess Diego's made of the infinite switchboard is just so good. "Oh, no. Why would you... No, no. Bad! Don't hurt the timeline!" Herb, I so get it. If only people would stop blundering around messing with timelines.
I swear, Five is the best lunatic of all time. Preparing for his gig with baby powder and calisthenics. Appointing Luther his spotter. “’I don’t trust him.’ ‘But he’s you.’ ‘Exactly.’”
For all that, in Vanya's dream/hallucination, Five is the only one who doesn't eat the brain, and I wonder if that's an allusion to him being the only one of the siblings whom Reggie didn't brainwipe after the Jennifer incident. (I seem to remember reading this somewhere a while back.)
Five's the lunatic, and in some way, he's also the only one who's sane.
