Swept-hilt Rapier
Dated: Late 16th century
Culture: German or Dutch
Measurements: Overall length 119cm
The hilt of the sword is of Norman’s Type 76 form with long, straight quillons with chiseled ball finials. The ‘pas d’ane’ comes with oval shell guard pierced and chiseled with flowers and interlace. Each of the three guard bars are forged with a spherical central boss and chiseled en suite with a flower. On the reverse the sword features four bars connecting the quillons and lower guard. It has a flattened hemispherical pommel writhen throughout and a long, narrow, diamond-section blade.
Sidenote:
The "pas d’ane" is a term of French origin, used fairly widely but incorrectly since the 19th century to describe the arms of the hilt. In the 17th century it was used to describe one of the oval shells forming the sword guard.
