Wonder Lakians come from all around,
some sit in chairs, some sit on the ground.Â
All are waiting in anticipation
for our community’s greatest celebration.
We commemorate in our own ways
the United States’ grand birthday.
(most of us come in packs).
Wee little children come too-
playing, running, finding something to do.
Some have wands and necklaces that glow in the dark,
though none are as bright as a firework’s spark.
Finally, shooting up high
a burst of color in the night time sky!
Fireworks that are yellow, purple, and green,
everyone here is enjoying the scene!
Fireworks that are blue, white, and red,
I’m glad I’m not asleep in bed!
Fireworks come in all shapes, colors, and sizes;
that evening, the sky is full of surprises.
Hearts, flowers, faces, whatever you please
some even resemble sweeping willow trees!Â
Sadly, the display is done,
and we’re all dismayed that the show is gone.
Yet as we go home and discuss the night’s events,
I can’t imagine an evening better spent.
Happiest Fourth of July, everyone! I actually wrote this poem a few years ago, quite a while before I moved here. Back in my small town, the fireworks were rather a big deal, one of very few community celebrations we did.Â
I truly hope you enjoyed it, it brought back some memories for me. Please let me know what you think! Constructive criticism is welcome as long as it isn’t cruel or hate-filled. Feedback helps us writers improve!Â
