Aaaand we have a new deadline: 31 Dec 2021.

After going through the feedback on our last update, I can now announce that I have extended the deadline to 31 Dec 2021.

Again, a big THANK YOU to everyone who already submitted fic or art for “Danse Macabre”.

For anyone who could not complete their piece in time, now is the chance to do it. 3 ½ months to work on fic, art, meta, poetry. Please keep in mind that the limit of 10K for fic as mentioned in the submission guidelines is really just that: a limit. Shorter fics, ficlets, even drabbles or drabble series are very welcome.

Also, because this has come up a few times in questions: NSFW content is fine, but not a requirement. You can find the submission guidelines on our website. One thing I’ve added is that we do accept previously published works (print or online) as long as they differ substantially from the earlier/online version, have been edited or extended, e.g. a short one-shot turned into a longer fic, an added chapter, scenes explored in greater detail, a WIP that you complete for the zine etc. Enough change to say: this merits a new Director’s Cut edition. :-)

Hi! Hope everything is going ahead for the zine as planned, I'm really excited about it! I do have a question: I know the guidelines say Erik/Christine as the main pairing, but I wondered if it would be acceptable if another person was also involved - especially if the main relationship is still E/C?

Let’s make this a summer of writing and creating art for Phantom of the Opera!

A quick reminder of the submission guidelines: 

The theme for this first issue is PotO in all its incarnations, from Gaston Leroux to the film and stage versions, with the focus on its dark and twisted aspects.

Pairings: Erik/Christine and tangential pairings, as well as gen content. 

We are looking forward to your contributions: fiction (limit 10K words), poetry, meta (limit 4K words), and art (both traditional and digital, colour or b/w).

Explore the darkness of PotO!

Taboo and outrageous topics are welcome, as are horror & violence, angst and drama, dark romance, character studies, explicit sexual content; however, while NSFW is of course allowed, it is not a requirement.

For this issue, we will not accept modern AUs. Please no Real Person Fiction (actors). No extreme underage characters (under 14).

Please submit your artwork as hi-res files (preferably .png / lossless compression) suitable for high-quality print. If you want to send in traditional artwork as master, please contact us to discuss the details. If you are submitting artwork especially for cover consideration, please mark it as such.

Multiple entries are allowed both for writing and art. Depending on space and the number of contributions, we may not be able to include all of them. We give priority to contributions that have not been published in print or on the internet before, as well as older works that are out-of-print. Authors and artists may post their works online 9 months after the zine’s publication date. Each contributor receives a trib copy of the published zine.

Happy 2021! And a new deadline for submissions.

2020 was quite a wild ride, with unprecedented challenges for many. Here’s hoping 2021 will turn out... less dystopian! 

I have changed the deadline for submissions to Danse Macabre to 31 May, 2021. 

Yes, so much about “hard deadlines” - but when the year is hard, it is valid for a fannish deadline to soften. This is meant to be a fun and inspiring project and not to put pressure on fans during a tense situation.

I’d appreciate a heads-up about submissions, however. If you already know that you would like to contribute a story or artwork, then please drop me a line: [email protected]. You have time until 31 May to send in the completed piece, but it would make things easier to have an idea what we can expect.

Hi! You said no modern AUs for that poto zine, would you mind defining how modern modern is for this? Like what year "modern" starts?

Hi there and thx for the question! 

The setting should stick to canon era - of course, there are several ideas and theories regarding the actual year of events for Leroux, ALW (especially with both the 2004 film and LND mixing things up), and e.g. the mini-series with Charles Dance. Playing with these varieties (1880s, 1890s, or fin-de-siècle) is completely fine, but for this issue of the zine typical modern AUs (present day settings and situations, for example coffee-shop AU) would not fit the overall tone. I’d say the start of World War I (1914) is a good cut-off date.

Announcement & Call for Contributions: Danse Macabre Issue No. 1

It is our pleasure to announce the launch of a new phan zine, a celebration of Phantom of the Opera in its rich variety!

The theme for this first issue is PotO in all its incarnations, from Gaston Leroux to the film and stage versions, with the focus on its dark and twisted aspects.

We strive to give our very best, both in editorial and layout work. However, we ask you to have your work beta-read before you submit it.

“Danse Macabre" is first and foremost a print zine. We will, however, also offer a digital version for phans who prefer ebooks or a pdf.

This is a fan project featuring transformative works, and not for profit — all proceeds will go into covering the costs of production.
