Examining Contrasting Views from Behaviorism and Psycho- Biological Perspectives
Examining Contrasting Views from Behaviorism and Psycho- Biological Perspective by Deborah Williams in Biomedical Journal of Scientific & Technical Research (BJSTR) https://biomedres.us/fulltexts/BJSTR.MS.ID.000130.php
Back pain and unhealthy behavior go hand in hand
Health News : A new study indicates that adolescents who experience back pain more frequently are also more likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, and report problems like anxiety and depression.
During adolescence, the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain (pain arising from the bones, joints or muscles) in general, and back pain, in particular, rises steeply. Although often dismissed as trivial and fleeting, adolescent back pain is responsible for substantial health care use, school absence, and interference with day-to-day activities in some children.
The study aimed at determining whether adolescents who experience back pain more often were also more likely to report other health risk indicators, such as alcohol use, smoking, school absenteeism, and depression or anxiety…Read more

Do you believe that watching violence on video games and/or television leads to violent behavior?
There are several different things that I believe are involved when it comes to games and/or television and violent behavior. As an adult, I understand a little bit better as to the violence in video games and television and see why my mother didn't want me to play certain games or watch certain things on TV. Although, at the time, I thought it was all fun and just wanted to be the kid in the neighborhood who had the latest video game. For me, I believe that watching or taking part in a video game as a child, (newborn-16), is dangerous. I believe that the brain is still developing what it needs on several levels including: emotions, actions, and right from wrong. Growing up and spending time in an altered state of consciousness makes it difficult for a developing brain (mainly the hypothalamus and hippocampus) to grasp the reality of the levels of emotion, actions, and right from wrong. Also, as a child between these ages, sleep is a necessity. It gives multiple sections of the brain and neurotransmitter systems within the brain time to replenish. When the brain over works it doesn't properly develop which can lead to multiple neuropsychiatric conditions, (attention and cognitive deficits, uncontrolled anger, headaches, addictions, depression, anxiety, etc..). Which, in a rapidly growing child, can cause damage to other things such as energy produced by the bodies metabolism, neural activity, and blocked adenosine receptors in the brain. Lack of sleep, due to tv or video games (and whats involved in the content of it), is constantly being recorded by the neuronal circuits (or the "chips), of the brain. Imprinting previous emotions, feels, events, actions, etc., are rapidly firing together.
So, my short answer would be - yes, I do believe violence in video games and tv shape and alter our brains behavior.
How does the information in your assigned reading and the statistics presented support or challenge your beliefs?
The information in our assigned reading with statistics presented support my beliefs but also challenge my belief. I believe every individual is different and some experiences that one person goes through in life can have a different mental or physical outcome on them then another individual with the same life experience. I also believe that all negative human behavior, such as outcomes of violence in video games and tv, are based off of understanding- Not all violence is the same and different forms of violence and have and different reaction on an individual. The brain controls/transfers/reacts/learns all behavior. And lastly, biological statistics of the brain and its behavioral attributes are the result of developmental and genotype experiences. For example, violence is heterogeneous (varying in character or content). Physical violence can be defensive, reactive, predatory, remorseless, or impulsive. Beliefs and culture can also be a reason for an individual to act out in a violent manner. Although, I do NOT believe that entirely. For instance, the discussion currently in my other class is about a murder case of a step-father brutally killing his son due to how important education was to him and how his belief and culture belief to have a good education led to an argument between his younger son and resulted in the son being bound, gagged, beaten, stabbed, and partial drowning. Personally, my belief is, is that at one point in the human brain, you have to know what is right, and what is wrong. But, if there was a proven neuropsychiatric condition to explain why an individual wasn't able to comprehend the consequences of their violent aggressive actions and behaviors, then that would explain more into detail as to why someone can act out the way one does towards certain situations.
When it comes to the brain and the study of neurobiology, there are several things that are unexplained that I, personally, would love to understand. such as certain negative emotions like hate. Why does the brain react so strongly to hate? I would love to "pick at someones brain" to understand better.
- Side note: Answering these 2 questions make me realize that maybe I am in the wrong profession! -
