WK 12-Demons
Background Origins
Demons appear in folklore and religious traditions across many cultures and time periods. In ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Greece, and later in Christianity and Judaism, demons were believed to be supernatural beings associated with evil, temptation, illness, or chaos. In Christian belief, demons are often described as fallen angels who rebelled against God and were cast out of Heaven. Throughout history, people used demons to explain things they did not understand, such as disease, mental illness, natural disasters, or sudden misfortune. These stories also served as moral warnings, teaching people what behaviors to avoid.
Pop Culture Connection
Demons are extremely common in modern pop culture. TV shows like Supernatural feature demons as recurring villains who possess humans and manipulate events. Movies such as The Exorcist and The Conjuring portray demons as terrifying forces that require religious rituals to defeat. Demons also appear in books, video games, anime, and music, often representing inner struggles or ultimate evil. Even today, demon imagery is used in art and fashion, showing how these ancient ideas still influence modern creativity.
Analysis / Reflection
I believe demon legends were mostly created to explain fear, guilt, and unexplainable experiences before science and medicine were advanced. Mental illnesses, sleep paralysis, or sudden personality changes may have been interpreted as demonic possession. Demons also symbolize human inner darkness, such as anger, greed, or temptation. While I do not think demons are physically real, I think they are real in a symbolic sense because they represent fears that humans still struggle with today. This is why demon stories continue to exist and remain powerful.
Conclusion
Demons are one of the oldest and most widespread folklore figures in history. Even though their forms have changed over time, their purpose remains the same—to explain fear and warn people about harmful behavior. From ancient legends to modern movies and shows, demons continue to live on in culture. This proves that folklore does not disappear; it simply adapts to new generations.
