This is formatted more like a bibliography (organized by subject) or directory to orient people towards Canaan and adjacent resources. NOTES: Added a Language section aimed at making Ugaritic language and cuneiform more accessible and understandable, as well as making the connections between all ancient and modern semitic languages clearer (I have gained a lot of understanding of texts by consulting Arabic speakers and I think the etymology of semitic words cannot be understated in this context. I also personally feel that this adds credence to Arabic being a West/Northern semitic product that did not originate so far south as usually attributed, but this is an aside). Will be updating over time.

Unofficial note: Fuck Brill, fuck all publishing houses, they are all demonspawn of the capitalist-academic class trying to suck every last red cent out of us by holding knowledge hostage.

hey sorry for the radio silence but I have been working on... things! Like a research paper. That I got accepted into a symposium panel to present. So the vomit-inducing idea of me standing next to actual academics aside I'll be posting my paper in full once I've presented because I'll be damned if I fall into the hole of stonewalling anyone from my work like how Big Academia does even if it's bad. Because if it's bad then we can learn from it, right? :sweating profusely:

the symposium was this morning, i had my paper rounded out at around 11k words 32~ish pages double spaced and somehow managed to get through my speech without puking all over myself.

the bad news: i dont think im gonna be able to post it for you guys. at least not yet

the good news: the moderator for the panel i was on wants me to publish my paper in an undergrad journal. so i might be able to just give it to you guys that way (when i make my citations all pretty LOL)

anyway yeah this has been a hell of a ride lmao ill get back to posting art soon now that i dont have a proverbial knife hanging over me

Coogan and Mark S. Smith (2012), "Baal in the Ras Shamra Texts" by Arvis S. Kapelrud (MY GOAT) (1952), and "The Goddess Anath" by Umberto Cassuto (1965). ive been meaning to get my hands on the Kapelrud and Cassuto for a while so I had to flex (and take them on loan to steal 🙂‍↕️)

sorry for being inactive but rest assured im back on my rogue academic bullshit by printing out a phone scanned version of Neal H. Walls' "The Goddess Anat in Ugaritic Myth" (1991) in the library. the guys at my local UPS who do the binding for these must fucking hate me. i will not stop though.

(note: i havent read as thoroughy as id like but ohhh my god so far i really love Walls' analysis of Anat as a representation of women [and to an extent other minority/subaltern genders] in rejecting femininity as a form of rebellion and anger at androcentric societies. like that fucking rules)

further thinking about how Walls isn't shy about talking about Anat's gender/lack thereof. She exists completely outside of the genders we see on display both in devotional texts/hymns and any kind of historical record, and Walls' bringing up how this connects to her status as "betulat" (virgin) and "ybmmt lmm" (sister in law of the peoples), because her rejection of femininity in a lot of ways keeps her from taking on the role of marriagable woman, keeping her as "betulat" and in the social group of rebellious, gender nonconforming "adolescents". Walls also brings up an interesting point about how this could connect to Anat's violence and passion and trophy-taking + the Aqhat epic as seeking to metaphorically and physically castrate men either to reinforce her genderlessness/third gender (???) or lash out against androcentrism (as Walls put it. I'm not sure if i want to label Ugaritic society as misogynistic even if Aqhat clearly is as a character, we just don't know if he's a stand in for a type of person who actively looks down on Anat for being a woman/perceived as a woman / women in any kind of nonconformity or if hes just stupid and an example of hubris). Walls also references a translation of the Aqhat epic that describes Aqhat's death in a.... uniquely grotesque way, which is saying a bit compared to Anat's slaying of Mot and her fighting in the valley in the UBC. imma try and find it. its a really good book.

like i HAVE to get my hands on this. its horrifying and nauseating in its simplicity and allusion to the butchering and processing of animal parts, but also fits with how Aqhat's remains are found and verified by his father from within the stomach of an eagle/vulture. that fucking RULES.

again im not buying the "adolescent" as literal, but Anat again occupying the liminal space between child and woman, and Baal being a young man from outside the family/taken as a son of El and seeking to ascend to "manhood" by becoming king of the gods. sort of like my working idea of El/the king of the gods being the "father" of all gods regardless of if hes actually their sire, as a status within the "family" structure of the pantheon, where every other god is a child in comparison. i guess. but still absolutely fascinating i love this shit. my goat
