Types of Patterns in Chinese

I recently came across a post describing the different types of patterns, so I thought knowing them in Chinese would also be useful.

Stripe - 条纹 - tiáo wén Pinstripe - 细条纹 - xì tiáo wén Cabana stripe - 沙滩条纹 - shā tān tiáo wén Breton stripe - 水手条纹 - shuǐ shǒu tiáo wén

Suzhou Numerals or Flower Numbers

As it turns out, China had it's own unique number system (which is known as Suzhou Numerals or Flower numbers) based on the rod numeral system, prior to the introduction of the widespread Hindu–Arabic numeral system (0, 1, 2, etc.) . The numbers go from 0-99, so anything above 99 is quite rare.

Although they're very rarely used now, with the possible exceptions of marketplaces, it's still quite interesting to know what they are and their unique features. The pinyin remains the same for the characters, so five would still be wǔ regardless of whether it's 五 or 〥 when using the pinyin system (it would presumably be different in Cantonese). I added an image at the top in case the Suzhou characters aren't showing up correctly for whatever reason.

You may notice that when the numbers change from 10s to 20s, the 十 gets an addtional 〡, so the 10 〸 would get an extra 〡 to become 〹, 〸 with 〢 would become 〺 (30). Interestingly enough, it's only up to 30, after it just adds 〇 to create 40, 50, 60 and so on. The "ten" part tends to be omitted, so 37 三十七 would simply be 〣〧 without the 〸.

Decided to do it for a hundred days instead of just period until exams week. Haven’t studied much yesterday due to not feeling well, accidentally doubled studies today…

Today’s study log

5h 44min - Chinese, mainly training writing characters

1h 43min - Economic, brain exploding, HELP

1h 15 min - Digital Literacy exam. Idk how I wrote it, still not feeling well today. Just hoping for the better

53 min - English, just some exercises and finally started to create flash cards.

Slightly not as intense as it was yesterday, but I’m still satisfied. Besides it’s weekend, for the sake of gods🥹

1/53 days of productivity 31/1/2025

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here… Over the past semester I’ve developed some consistency, so I want to start this productivity challenge

(a tiny proof that I can do it)

Why 53 days? My spring exams will start on 25th of March, so it’s exactly the time until the exam period.

What are my main goals for this challenge? Increase my overall study performance. During the past semester, my average grades were around 65-70%, I want to get them as high as possible.
