Feel away!

Artistic Vision

This is the thing we get told about A LOT in class.

Mine? Well I wished to explore raw emotion as a sound source using the process of intuition. Aka- “Feels good? Fuck yeah! Feels shit? Fuck no!” = Intuition. I want the listener to feel as if they are being taken on a strange, creepy journey into the raw state of emotion. Whatever that looks like for them. Society rarely allows us to experience true emotion because apparently you’re “crazy” if you have them. The Pink Floyd song “The Trial” puts it very succinctly: “The prisoner who now stands before you Was caught red-handed showing feelings Showing feelings of an almost human nature!”

So I want to invoke some of sort of emotional experience- whether that be as a listener observing my emotion objectively or more intensely: the listener empathising/experiencing my emotion to the point of bringing out their own emotions to experience.

As a strong side note: I sort of want all of my music to conjure this sort of reaction on some level.

The actual recording

So I never mentioned how I actually recorded the audio. Aka me crying. So after an (obviously) emotional day I got home and whipped out the compressor microphone and basically pressed record. It was VERY strange crying into a microphone. But I’ve experienced weirder things.

Mastering

Now to make it all sound cohesive. My friend has a 3 step “Ghetto bitch master” method that he has kindly shared with me.

1. Light compression (tick)

2. Eq out anything that sounds fucked (ve shall see)

3. Adaptive limiter

And boom, it’s bitchin’ and ready.

Weirdness

Clocks.

Gasps.

High hats.

Ice cubes.

Fill my drink with your sadness.

And white noises.

I thought these sound effects would be fitting for the mood. It almost almost hints at alcoholism yay (what? I said nothing!). The high hat crash sounds like a train coming to a stop (if I EQ it well) and the high hat beat adds some momentum although the timing isn’t QUITE right. Not sure how to fix that. As per usual, the beginning of the song is quite slow. I hope that’s okay, it’s been a source of criticism before. I just love creating levels of spaciousness. Then when rhythmic elements come in, it’s quite shocking and pleasing.

Chop off

I’m not satisfied with just the chop. I mean hey, I’ve done it, there is now a textural layering of chopped up crying/squeal sounds. I showed it to a friend and he shivered and told me to stop it because it was too creepy.... yes. Perfect. Ideal.

However, it isn’t full enough so I’m thinking of adding some samples to beef up the chop. Also watch some lectures to see how the fuck I’m meant to mix all this. Where do I start?

I sort of let loose a bit due to a whirlwind of personal life events and now I’m behind on the due date. I have the audio of me crying, I’ve done the two things I’ve learnt on it. It sounds creepy. But its not enough and I’m out of time. Then this sweet guy (link above) saved my life. Chopping things. My favourite. So I’ve learnt through this video to chop up me crying to insert some rhythm to build tension/release etc. I want to layer it so it builds. And then I will have to mix everything so it balances itself out. Be right back, chopping.

Much ado about nothing

Why not throw in some Shakespeare? Maybe he will possess my brain and actually create something worthy..

So I learnt about a few techniques I can do to make crying sound edgy as fuck. And I will link the youtube videos that helped me below..

1. Reverb/reverse madness.

Basically playing around with sending the audio to a reverb track, reversing said audio and then converting it back forwards in arrangement view to add a “ghost” track to your vocal. I have NO idea how this works/the theory behind it but HEY it sounds pretty creepy, and I know I’m a fan of that!

2. Side chain compression for a beat

Apparently this is where you put a compressor on the vocal track that makes it drop out when the bass beat is played. So you lower the threshold in the compressor effect of how much voice you want to be played during the beat. Very badly explained I know. But again, hey, the effect on the crying audio is that it makes me seem like I know some shit and that’s pretty spectacular.

Also, I wanted to put in a beat to represent a pseudo heartbeat because if you didn’t know, when you cry a lot (this says a lot about me), you sometimes stress yourself out enough that you begin to hear your heartbeat very audibly.

So I got two pretty cool things I can do to the audio of me crying. But it doesn’t flesh out enough material for a complete audio experience so hmmm. I mean, it would be pretty intense by itself to just experience the audio of someone crying. But I’m greedy and I want more things to be involved.

Crying

No, its not just a melodramatic title. I want to record myself crying and do something strange with it. I haven’t heard it before anywhere and I think it would be interesting to explore the sound quality that raw emotion would produce. Am I crazy? Actually, don’t answer that.

This time its to create purely for creation, as long as it is artistically sound and probably deep enough to stimulate many brains. What shall I do? So far, I’m thinking of doing some electronic psycho-active crazy sound world.. as per usual.. however, I did that for my major work so would prefer a more specific idea..

Final touches

I’ve ordered everything, done all the cuts. It’s imperfect but whatever, there’s no more time. I now have to manually do the crossfades because GarageBand sucks ass. Then delete all the shit. Submit. Reward? So much god damn red wine.

Next day

I forgot to tell you- brief side note: I had a massive chain of overdue assignments and this was the last damn one. So it’s overdue. I talked to Damian and he said to talk about the struggle.

THE STRUGGLE IS SO GOD DAMN REAL.

Concluding thought: I hate people who think they can cover Beyonce.
