“What an interesting election this is shaping up to be,” he mutters to himself, flipping a page of his newspaper, an untouched cup of coffee growing cold on the table next to him.

“Interesting isn’t the word that I’d use for it.” It was certainly suspicious that the most promising candidate was dead, but that wasn’t her problem anymore.

“When you have years of experience behind you, you tend to get a feeling when things aren’t right.”

“Forget what the papers say, it’s highly likely that the two incidents were completely related.”

“I will do. How long has he been missing for?” Helen tried to convince herself that she wouldn’t get involved in the search.

“Have you seen this?” Olivia held out a Missing poster with JJ’s face on it. “When was the last time you saw him?” 

“I’m sorry, but I don’t even know who that is.” Helen wasn’t entirely sure why she was apologizing to the girl.

“Excellent,” He responded, starting down the path to the pub and hoping she would fall into step next to him. She seemed especially uptight, but laid back personality always seemed to work well with the uptight women he ran into. “You know you don’t need to feel obligated to go with me. If you had other plans I won’t keep you..”

“I didn’t have any other plans.” Helen replied as she fell into step with him. She knew that people would talk though, and she was honestly a little worried about what they would say.

“You!” He said, walking up to the stranger briskly, “Yeah… Hey, help a fellow out, okay? Pretend like we’re talking until those two leave, alright?” He said, gesturing behind him.

Helen turned when the stranger walked up to her. “Um.... why?” She asked bluntly.

Writing Challenge 1

1.  What is your character’s personal fashion style?

Helen has a bad habit of wearing tight clothing because she has come to find it more comfortable. When she was working as an auror it was generally leather pants and tight vest tops but now they have given way to skinny jeans. Unlike most women her age, when Helen lounges around at home, it’s normally in a corset and jeans. 

2. What is your character’s strongest memory?

Despite having a few bad memories that frequently haunt her, her strongest memory was when her mother remarried. Despite the fact that she had only been three years of age, she will never forget the day when her mother admitted in front of hundreds of guests, that she loved her new husband’s daughters more than she loved her own.

3. What do they think of creation? Do they believe in evolution or do they believe in God? What is their religion like?

Helen decided from an early age that religion was just a crock of shit. After all, if there was a god, there wouldn’t be so much wrong with the world. 

4. If your character had one thing to say to their parents before their parents died, what would it be?

Helen was fortunate enough to be with her father when she died. She told him that she loved him, and that she never blamed him for leaving. If she was to speak to her mother again, she wouldn’t lie. She wouldn’t pretend to love her, and she would also admit that she would never forgive her. 

5. What does your character most want to change about themselves?

Helen has a bad habit of questioning anyone who behaves even the slightest bit suspiciously around her. It is something that she hates about herself, and a habit that she wishes she could kick.

6. What is one of their long term goals?

Helen’s main long term goal is to become a mother. She wants to be a better mother than hers ever was, but she is starting to realise that this is a goal that she might never achieve.

“Quite the habit. I prefer music myself. That and traveling..” He joked, trying to lighten the mood after her interrogation. “I was heading to the pub myself. Care to join?”

Helen paused slightly to think about her options. Either she could go home and worry about where her husband was, or she could join Thomas at the pub and possibly make a new friend. “ Um... Sure.”

“I wouldn’t call it ‘complaining’ if it’s just stating the obvious.”

“Well then, less stating the obvious and more drinking.”

“Oh, good. You can stop complaining then.”

“I don’t think drinking alone is ever in any sort of spirit–not the good kind, at least.  Everyone should have a friend to drink with them.”

“Well then, why don’t you get yourself a drink and be my friend for a while.”

“Who are you to say I’m shirking my responsibilities? Today happens to be my day off.” He smirked over at her, amused by just how harsh she was being to a man she barely knew. Who knew how long that amusement would last though. “Pleasure to meet you Helen. I’m Thomas O’Malley but you can call me O’Malley.”

“I guess old habits die hard.” Questioning people’s motives used to be a huge part of Helen’s job, and therefore her life, and it was a habit that she hadn’t quite managed to break yet.

“Well, that’s not exactly in the holiday spirit, now is it…”

“I’ve found from experience that drinking whisky alone is very much in the holiday spirit.”

“Can’t a man get a little fresh air without the third degree around here? You sure do ask a lot of questions and I don’t even know your name.”

“There is a huge difference between a little fresh air and shirking responsibilities. It’s Helen by the way.”

“Everyone could use a little fresh air darling. So I head to the village whenever I can. Maybe its all the beautiful women who keep me coming back.”

“And when you’re supposed to be teaching just so happens to be the best time to leave the castle?” She asked skeptically, ignoring his comment about beautiful women.

Has someone been neglecting their studies? I know it’s just music class but it still requires even the most minimal of effort.

“Shouldn’t you be up at the castle teaching those music classes, instead of just stalking your students into the village?”
