“Jane-y….” Johnnie cooed, just outside of his apartment. He had sworn – sworn – that he left everything locked when he left this afternoon. Yet, when he came back, he had noticed that his window was open. Better yet, there was a gap the size of his fist, just thick enough for his black cat, Jane, to slip through. It was worse to know that he only noticed this gap after calling his cat several times, then searching through this entire apartment for her.

So, he left his apartment complex in search of his cat. At one point, kneeled in front of thick bushes, ducking beneath them in search of his cat, all the while going, “Pss Pssss Pss Psss.”

When Lucy was out of her appartment it was for one of four purposes, Work, errands, chess in the park or her nightly jog. This time, however, she was just...walking, exploring. She used to enjoy exploring, going into the dark places unthread by the fearful and safe but ever since...well, she couldn’t pin point one moment exactly, but ever since everything she’d grown tired of it. It felt nice to just be in a place, calming, hassle and drama free...

And then she heard him. 

She came to a halt when she spotted him crouched by the bushes. She approached slowly. Should she say something? Was it any of her business? No, she wasn’t working, she didn’t have to ask any questions she didn’t truly want to ask, besides, she was sure he wouldn't want her interfering. “Um...” she said, unable to rein in her curiosity. “I’m sorry to intrude but may I ask what you’re up to?”

She watched with intense curiosity as Lucy moved piece after piece. Montana had never been good at chess. Her mind went a million different directions but she couldn’t get it to focus on chess whenever she tried. As the person she was playing hung their shoulders in defeat, Montana beamed. “Wow! Where did you learn to play chess like that?”

Someone was talking to her right, a young woman. Lucy turned in the direction of the voice as she blinked out of the land of deep silent thought and into the real world where she couldn’t just stare blankly at people, she had to talk to them. When she was finally present she found she didn’t like the question. It wasn’t that the question was bad or that the woman meant anything cruel by it, no, the problem with the question was that Lucy didn’t like the answer. “Oh, well, playing in parks has really helped,” she said, editing as usual. 

Perhaps for the first time since coming to America, Lucy hoped the conversation would take a sharp turn to comments on her accent. “Do you play chess?” she asked, “or...have an interest in the sport?”

Sommer had heard about the new private detective in town. She wanted to get to know the woman a little bit more. Maybe this “Lucy” would be able to get her more information for the podcast, or at the very least, maybe this woman would be a good friend to make. As the game finished, she pursed her lips. “You know, I’ve never been good at chess.” She admitted. Strategy games were not her strong suit, as much as she wished they were. “You’re the new PI in town, yeah?”

Lucy blinked a few times, as she did when readjusting from deep silent thought to conversation. She knew she should say something but for a moment she blanked and just sort of stared at her. “Oh,” she said at last, “you were fine.” Lucy might not have been a grand master but she like to think that if a person lost to her that didn’t mean they were bad at the game. “Not the worst I played this week.” She winced, perhaps she oversold it and sounded in-genuine. 

“Um...anyway, yes, I am a PI,” she said, hoping her blank stare didn’t make her seem incompetant. “I’m better at my job than conversation, I promise.”

Taylor is in the park watching the chess game that Lucky was in they where so intrigued and can not keep there eyes off of the game this is so much fun but maybe they can learn something  from this then sees that Lucky did win a smile would come across there face and would clap. “Holy crap that was amazing and congrats on your win you are really good.”

She was a little dazed, still in the proverbial Zone when she heard a woman’s voice. She turned her head in her direction, blinking a few times, was she talking to her? Of course Lu, who else would she be talking to? “Oh...well, thank you,” she said, quiet, a little anxious she might comment on her accent which contrasted notably with the American’s. 

“Do you...play chess?” she asked, realizing she should say something kind of like that, it was only polite. Oh right! “I’m sorry, I’m Lucy Armstrong, what’s your name?”

Checkmate.

Lucy had lived in Lakeview a year, drawn in initially by the distance it put between her and home and kept her there was the curiosity. Route 9, the murders...when Lucy was getting her masters degree, being a part of solving a crime like that was what she yearned for but things changed and a traditional career became out of the question. Lu was getting restless, frustrated but staying was still better than leaving and the money she was making was too good to justify moving on. In the meantime, she would satisfy her mind however she could, sometimes she did that playing chess in the park.

Her foot tapped as she silently moved her knight, it was a checkmate and she knew her opponent knew that too or rather, they would soon. She waited and she watched.
