How to get out of a reading slump
A while back posted a list of ten books to help you get out of a reading slump, but I also wanted to post a more general list of tips I personally think are useful when you find yourself in a reading slump. (I have also talked about this topic in this ask). So here's some of my tips:
Take a break. Sometimes you can get in reading slumps because you are burned out, maybe not just because of reading, but that can be affected as well. You have no obligations when reading (unless of course if you have to do it for school/uni, in which case I would still recommend trying to get some time off or at least slow down a bit in order to get some energies back). Sometimes accepting that you are in a non-reading place in life it's the best solution.
If you feel like it's a book you are reading that is putting you in a reading slump dnf it, or at least try to switch between that and another book. I personally tend to get stuck when I have only one book in my currently reading pile, because I need to vary often, so I like to have at the very least two books that I am currently reading. Realizing this about myself made me read much more, because I have avoided a lot of reading slumps. I'd also like to add that there's no shame in dnf-ing a book, if you are not enjoying your time with it there's no reason you should keep forcing yourself to read that. Maybe it's not the right time, and you'll enjoy it more in the future, or simply the book is not made for you, which is totally fine.
Graphic novels are a great compromise to get some reading done when you are in a reading slump, but you still want to something to read. This is specifically my solution for when I am in a reading slump caused by being burned out. Graphic novels tend to require less brain energy, and the illustrations usually help a lot with the flow of the story. I think this is the safest option when you are in the worse reading slumps.
Audiobooks are your best friends, whether you want to listen to it while doing other activities, or you want the narrator to help you while you follow the page, I feel like this is another great option. I personally love audiobooks, and I like to always have one on the go. This is again a great option if you are feeling burned out, in those cases I really like to listen to the audiobook as I take a walk, or even as I play some mindless games online like tetris, and similar things. These are also a great option to help when the book you are reading is putting you in a reading slump but you really have to read it. I have used audiobooks a lot in high school to help when I had to read poems or big classics.
Short story collections can be one of the best options to get back into reading. These take off the pressure of being consistent in order to remember things, because you can pick them up and leave them as you like, since most stories won't be over 25 pages usually. There's also some great options of collections that include multiple genres, which can be very helpful when you are stuck and don't really know what you want to read.
Fairytales and kid's books might not come to mind as soon as you think of what to read, but they can be very helpful to get you out of reading slumps. They are short and lighthearted which are two fundamental characteristics of good books to get you back into reading. And rivisiting some childhood favourites is always a great choice in my opinion.
Reread an old favourite or a comfort book. I know some people don't love revisiting old favourites, but I personally love them. You always get something new out of the story, and rereading a plot you know already can take off a lot of the pressure of reading, because you don't have to pay the same attention as with a story you know nothing about. This can be very helpful when getting back into the habit of reading.
Set up a cozy place to read. I am all about romanticizing the small things in life, and this is a very effortless way to put you into a good mindset to read. I personally like to light a few candles, make myself a nice cup of tea, maybe get a little treat to eat, cuddle up under a blanket and just read. Of course your set up might change depending on your preferences, just have a little fun with it, you could even try to read a bit while you are taking a bath.
Try to read outside. Similarly to the last tip, changing your enviroiment can be helpful sometimes. Some people like to read in a cafè, but you could also go in your garden if you have one or in a park.
Consume bookish content. This might seem stupid at first but sometimes seeing other people be excited about reading and books is very motivating. It has personally helped me several times.
Start a buddy read with a friend you feel comfortable with. Sharing your thoughts with someone as you read a book can keep the motivation up and a buddy read can be a great option to help with motivation, but be sure that you are comfortable with this person so that you don't feel too pressure upon you. Be clear from the beginning set a small goal and have fun with your buddy.
At the moment these are all the tips that came to my mind when thinking about getting out of a reading slump. Of course different people might have different methods, but changing things up can always be helpful. As I said at the beginning you shouldn't feel pressure when reading, and if it's a no reading moment in your life there's not shame in it, but I have also been stuck in reading slumps where I actually did want to read but I couldn't bring myself to do so, and many of these things helped me.

Hey, do you have any tips to regularly motivate yourself to study?
I often get overwhelmed by the homework and forget about the textbook readings and preparation.
Hi anon,
sorry for taking so long to answer and thanks for the question.
1) get a study buddy. find a person with similar academic goals to you even if you don't study the same thing and set a time and a place regularly, were you just go to actually study and hold eachother accountable. my friend and I meet every saturday and go to the library or a study cafe for five hours. we are different majors so we can't really help one another but it's about accountability.
2) habits, routines >> motivation. I am the biggest procrastinator and motivation doesn't work for me. I have created systems that force me to study. Like the study friend or going to a study group meeting, going to the library after class without going home in between cause if I go home I now I'm just going to watch tv and not study at all. you can also try virtual study groups if it's more accessible to you although I've never tried with strangers before.
3) plan everything. plan ahead from the moment you get the syllable as far as you can. organize time for smaller tasks every day or every other day if you can. make the schedule as realistic and as flexible as you can.
4) a little bit every day. textbook readings don't usually get done cause a.our asses are on fire from hw b. they don't have a deadline c. are huge . So break it down in smaller chunks. let's say you have to get through 800 pages. from the stem prospective I try to skim through 10 to 20 pages each time and get the general gist.
5) 5% is better than 0. even if you do nothing but read one page or solve one practice problem a day it's still something.
6) find old exams. if most of your classes have exams in the end and not projects lime mine, try to find as many older exam questions as possible. if the professor is the same they usually have a similar style of exams each year. this way you know what kind of exam you are studying for and can focus on the material that actually matters so you don't get overwhelmed as much.
7) make friends with upperclassmen. they've been already through this and usually have pretty good advice and tricks. I like to bribe them with coffee or food and they'll even give you the work they've done for the class before, this way you get a better understanding of what you have to do for the class. they are also a good motivation or reminder cause they are the proof that you can pass this class.
8) it's going to be ok. school and uni suck sometimes but you can get through it. if it gets too overwhelming academically see if you have the option for a tutor or sth similar and don't be too proud to ask for help, we've all been there.
Hope this helps!!! If anyone has more questions my dms and asks are open!!!
1. Organize your study space
Organizing your study space is really important. Avoid starting to study before that because getting up to get things you don’t have at hand will distract you. I have my own “desk organization list”. Laptop, iPad, Apple Pencil, earphones, water, fruits, my pencil case, my folders, paper, etc.
2. Make a plan and get control of your calendar
Make a "to do list" and plan everything out. When exactly are your exams? How many days do you want to study for each subject? Which subject needs more time? Etc., etc.
3. Mistakes are good
When studying we do make mistakes sometimes. I hate it. You hate it. Yes, it’s awful. But they are GOOD. You learn from them. A short anecdote of my life: If I didn’t make the mistake of dating a complete idiot, I probably would not have learned that bad boys really aren’t that great haha.
4. Find examples
To really understand something, you should find examples. E. g. if you are learning about some kind of criminal law, look up cases. If you are studying about the business cycle, look up examples of different countries. Is the US in a boom? Or a depression? Has it been in a depression before? What was that like?
5. Test yourself
Quizz yourself. This is the most important thing when studying something by heart or learning a language. Get your flashcards out of your pocket! And quizz yourself every single day!
6. Take regular breaks and sleep for 8 hours
I know, studying is important. But what is even more important is your health. Don’t drain yourself. You got this. Don’t worry! Take a short break after 25 minutes every time. Just a short one. Allow yourself to breath and close your eyes. Your brain needs sleep and breaks to function!
7. Study before going to sleep
A numerous amount of studies have found out that the brain processes a lot of things while sleeping. This can be very beneficial to us! Study for a few minutes before going to bed or revise what you have studied that day. It will help you remember it better.
8. Eat good foods
I know you don’t want to hear this… A pizza is quite nice. But is it good for you? Probably not. Food is fuel. But we need good fuel to function properly. Eat nutritious foods and be good to your body. It really needs a healthy diet to maintain your health and stay happy. Also: Your brain needs calories. Don’t starve yourself. Aaaand, remember to drink enough water. I recommend watching “The Game Changers” on Netflix.
9. Exercise
Working out can be extremely beneficial to you. Not just for your physical strength but also for your mental health and productivity, studies have found. Going for a run or going to the gym can increase your overall well-being! So let’s go! I’m getting ripped tonight, RIP that… umm sorry.
10. Be kind to yourself
Last but not least, please be kind to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up. Everything is going to be fine. You are not alone. You are loved. You are worthy. Please remember that! I love you.

THIS STUDYING THING WORKED WITH ME!!
I don't usually study a lot. Like I'd sit down for the whole day on my desk and get so little done, sometimes I even get nothing done at all, but today I weirdly did a lot... Since I knew my finals will be in a week, I sat down with one of my "most worrying" college mates and we planned out the whole week's study plan so we can get the most done a week before the exam. Yesterday was a bit messy as I didn't really have a day plan, so I decided I won't fall for the same shiz again Before I slept yesterday, I planned today's study schedule, and it worked because I knew there was a lot of breaks that allowed me to watch anime and and read a lot of my book and text my friends back without being in a hurry, and when I'd finish before the time I set, I'd add this time to my break. the study plan/ schedule: 7:00/ 7:30 wake up 8:30 : 10:30 study session 1 10:30 : 11:00 break 11:00 : 12:30 study session 2 12:30 : 2:00 (pm) make food and eat (brunch) 2:00 : 4:00 study session 3 4:00 : 4:30 break 4:30 : 5:00 study session 4 (more of reading and organizing my thoughts on the part I'll study next) 5:00 : 7:00 make food and eat dinner 7:00 : 8:30 study session 5 8:30 : 9:00 break notes on that: -study sessions can be replaced by assignments/ revising/ doing homework or a research or anything - you should literally get better eating habits than mine, I'm not so healthy, I eat 2 meals only also and I don't usually have breakfast but I'd get snacks or yogurt or something light or some drinks in between - before I sit down to study I make sure I have all the tools needed so I don't get up (the notebooks, textbooks, planner, sticky notes, laptop, pens, highlighters, a bottle of water, a cup of something -so I won't get up to make something to drink- snacks, tissues, phone if needed) -keep a note beside you and when you remember anything that you wanna do in your break write it down there -more tips (that I didn't use much of today but helps me a lot) : =setting a timer =listening to songs or music or something (when I'm down I play la la land's sound track) =playing a movie/ cartoon or anything that you know well by heart so you wouldn't be so focused on it (actually worked- I did it before an exam) =changing the place of studying (bed, balcony, kitchen, living room, at a friend's place, in a coffee shop, anywhere) =video calling a friend or someone: you don't have to be studying the same thing =keeping up with a friend to see what you both finished and what is left and give each other a push =remember that progress is more important that perfection =if you are tired you can just read the lesson and underline/ sort out the ideas in your head =it's ok to not feel motivated, but know that if you waited for motivation it will never come .. also you can watch a motivational video if it works with you =online study groups can be effective -breaks (this is how I used my breaks): =replying to certain texts =checking on some people =reading =listening to music =planning the next study session =watching anime/ an episode of anything if its a long break =stretching or some kind of work out idk =spending time with family (in my case I don't recommend much) =walk around =clean/organize your room / do a chore =spend it on your hobby =learning a new language =15/20 mins nap =write down your thoughts
all of these are gold
oh my god
man ive been watching videos of sheep getting shorn all night. makes me wanna be a sheep, getting man handled by a farmer who loves me, emerging from my cocoon of wool a totally new being. prancing around the barnyard so free, no longer weighed down by winter. i have clinical depression
it’s posta like these that so encapsulate the spirit of tumblr while making it impossible to explain tumblr to my mom
“as FullMetalFisting explained, mom, our insensate depression manifests as deeply sensate desires, like being a sheep free from weight it can’t control and-”
