#Weekly Update 32: I knew that being far away from home is not easy at the beginning, but never thought it would be harder when you just move to a different city
Hello everyone,
I’ve started this new blog post over 100 times, but never finished it until now.
‘Why?’, you may ask.
I never finished it, because I was too busy with my non virtual life (aka the life of an University student, who as we all know has no free time at all! 😂), I was not motivated at all and not satisfied with the result of started, but not finished texts. More than 3 month have now passed since my last entry. I wasn’t in a good mood and there were no 'really exciting’ topics to write about! :(
To be honest I had a reverse culture shock when I came back from England and believe me or not, there are still 'culture shock moments’ happening, because I moved from my home(in Germany) to the (German) city in which my University is. The distance from my home to Uni is nearly the same as the distance from home to London! 😝 Especially when I went to Berlin for the first time(which is not far from where I live now), I was a little bit shocked. Most of the time it’s nothing serious, just strange people in Berlin, who behave in a way that I don’t expect them to. And most of the time it’s just a funny anecdote, which I tell my friends and family at home afterwards! 😆
I’d never been to Berlin before I moved to my University city, so I guess I really didn’t know what to expect. For me it felt like something similar to a culture shock, besides the fact that I didn’t move to different country. Unfortunately I always compare things (is this a typical German thing? I’m not sure), so when I went to Berlin for the first time I was thinking: 'Great, it’s just another capital city, like London with a lot of tourists and soo cosmopolitan, because of them.’ In my opinion I still haven’t seen enough of Berlin to describe the city to somebody, who never went there, in detail. But what I can definitely say is that is NOT like London or other capital city at all. 😁😄
So this is just a small amount of what has happened since the last entry.
I also finished my first semester at Uni (which included a lot of new things and experiences), passed my English exam (I’m so relieved now! ☺️🇺🇸🇬🇧), went home for my first real 'Semesterferien’ (semester break), got sick just a few days after I arrived at home (of all the things I thought I would miss, I never ever thought I would miss Lemsip so much at this moment, but fortunately I had some halls soothers, which I bought in England and loads of Tea of course), spent some quality time with friends and family, started to revise/review my Italian (allora = well) and finally went back to Uni city yesterday.
However, I didn’t write and speak much English the last few weeks, but I hope I got back into writing (proper English) on this blog.
Some people asked me if I miss England. I have to say that I do from time to time. It’s not the places (let’s exclude London💘 from this, okay?😅☺️) it’s more the people I miss. But when it rains here it’s not the same as in England. Speaking German the whole day again was strange at the beginning, but I got used to it. Luckily my University has a lot of international students, so I speak a lot of English anyway. And by continuing this blog I try to improve my writing skills! 😁 I miss the British humor sometimes and British TV series like BBC’s Sherlock. But BIG NEWS I’ll go back to the UK in August! I got an internship at/ in (why do I always struggle with this prepositions?) Bournemouth for six weeks and I’m really looking forward to it!
I want to visit friends and my host family, but also want to go to some other places in the UK (Cornwal, Devon and Dublin for example, so if you have any recommendations please let me know! 😉 Thanks!😊).
Hopefully it was interesting for you. From now on I try to publish an update every Saturday (as usual).
So stay tuned and have a sunny weekend!☀️
All the best from a more and more springlike Germany, x Julia
