XDynamics has announced that at CES 2017 kicking off in a few weeks it will have a very cool new consumer drone called Evolve on display that has a world’s first feature. This drone has a dual-screen controller that lets you see from the drone’s perspective as it flies. The drone is designed for aerial photography and filming. The dual-screen controller has its own 64-bit quad-core processor inside along with a GPU, 4GB of RAM, and it runs Android. The screens have two times the brightness of ordinary smartphone screens. The main screen is a 7-inch unit that functions as a viewfinder. The secondary screen is a 5-inch multi-touch control panel and the entire controller folds. It features minimal buttons and sticks for controlling the drone. XDynamics also fits the Evolve with what it calls the Smart Pilot System (SPS). SPS combines the required functions for amateur and pro users operating the Evolve drone and gives all you need for flying and filming in one interface. The user has an album manager to sort, rename, view, and organize media files. The Alert Center keeps pilots aware of the drone status. Evolve has a 4K camera with Sony CMOS that is able to provide 1080p at 60fps and transmission latency of less than 10 milliseconds. The camera has a 21mm f/2.8 lens with 12.4MP fitted to a 3-axis gimbal stabilizer, 4k video can be recorded at 24fps.

Google recently introduced a feature called fingerprint scanner gestures which allowed Google Pixel owners to perform actions such as display notifications by swiping their fingerprint scanner in a certain direction for example. It turns out Microsoft has been working on a similar feature. In a patent application called “Biometric Gestures” Microsoft explains: “In one or more implementations, a computing device includes a biometric sensor, such as a fingerprint touch sensor, that is configured to detect gesture input. When gesture input is received from a user, the biometric sensor detects biometric characteristics (e.g., a fingerprint) of the user and determines a gesture (e.g., a tap, touch and hold, or swipe) based on the gesture input. The user is authenticated if the biometric characteristics correspond to an authorized user of the device. If the user is authenticated, the device transitions to an authenticated user state that is associated with the type of gesture, such as by displaying personal information on a lockscreen of the computing device or opening a quick action center”

The University of Washington may have just solved Wi-Fi power consumption problems once and for all. A group from the the University's engineering department have created a Wi-Fi system that, according to them, uses 10,000 times less power than traditional Wi-Fi. “Passive Wi-Fi” as the team calls it, is compatible with current smartphones and routers. The Traditional Wi-Fi radios consume a lot of power mainly because of the analogue radio frequency (RF). In order to reduce power consumption of Wi-Fi radios in smartphones and digital devices, the Passive Wi-Fi only uses the digital baseband while the analogue RF band is delegated to a single plugged-in device. Essentially, Passive Wi-Fi helps remove the power hungry analogue RF from the picture, which will make you smartphone last a whole lot longer. The plugged-in device is used to send the wave RF signal to the Passive Wi-Fi device which then generates Wi-Fi packets and sends it to existing devices including smartphones. The team has managed to achieve download speeds of up to 11Mbps which falls in line with most LTE download speeds. However, the team is now working on increasing the throughput. This new technology will allow for new kinds of communications that was not possible before due to the power requirements of current Wi-Fi systems.

There are a lot of exciting things happening with earphones at the moment. Wireless connections are getting better, the buds themselves are becoming less noticeable, and a number of companies are offering “augmented audio” that filters and enhances your natural hearing. A new startup from the UK, though, is combining all of these ideas with a product design we’ve never seen before. Meet the HY, currently raising funds on Kickstarter. The HY’s key feature is its patented wishbone-shaped speaker, which braces itself against the inner walls of your ear canal. It uses both bone conduction and regular speaker tech to transmit sound, but the product’s creators, Third Skin, promise that it also leaves your natural hearing completely unimpeded. After all, there’s nothing blocking up your ear — just a slim bend of plastic placed inside it. The rest of the earphone sits behind your ear looking like molded plastic slug. This component houses the Bluetooth connection, microphone, infrared gesture sensor, motion trackers, and battery, which Third Skin claims is big enough to deliver more than twice the longevity of “other leading wireless earbuds.” You’ll be able to use the HY for listening to music and making call, says the company, but it’ll also be able to track your workouts and act as a hearing aid, amplifying sounds around you.

Japanese electronics maker Panasonic has created a smart shopping system that automatically tallies and puts the items in a bag while the customer pays the bill. The system includes special baskets with slidable bottoms that allow picked items to fall into a bag placed underneath. After a customer places the basket in a slot, the bottom of the basket slides out and the merchandise drops into a plastic bag underneath. Since the store clerk does not need to register the scan of the product or pack the bag at the cash register, it leads to labour saving of the store operation. The setup is already in use at a convenience store near Panasonic's Japan headquarters.

UNIQUE TRANSPARENT WIRELESS SPEAKER BY SWEDISH DESIGN TEAM The design team at People People based in Stockholm Sweden, have designed a very unique wireless speaker in the form of the Small Transparent Speaker, which as the name suggests allows you to see its inner workings. The wireless peaker has been designed to look great in any situation or environment and is constructed using a white powder coated aluminium unibody frame. On the front, you have a volume adjustment knob, a classic rocker switch for power on and off, a LED to show you if the speaker is on and a 3.5 jack if you prefer to use the included cable for your audio source. The speaker has both WiFi and Bluetooth. This means you can easily send high-end audio from your phone, tablet, or computer from near or far in your house. The developers made a big effort to support both the latest and greatest platforms, such as Apple Airplay and Google Cast, to maximize your connectivity options. With wireless connectivity, we can update your product software so that the product improves over time. The first functionality that we are planning to launch is Spotify Connect which means that you can find our speaker super easily in the Spotify app. The goal is to make the connected experience as friction free as possible for you. The Transparent Speaker is built with premium audio components. The two-custom made 2.5 inch full range drivers deliver crisp lifelike vocals, while the passive bass radiator gives a punch to any beat. It has a built-in amplifier which has embedded digital signal processing (DSP) to ensure a full and balanced crystal clear sound. If you use a high resolution audio streaming source, you will really start to hear new things.

2016 is the year in which Apple introduced waterproofing features to two of its products: the iPhone 7 & 7 Plus and the Apple Watch Series 2. With the Apple Watch, Apple even announced that the smartwatch could be used for swimming, and there was even a unique feature in which the Apple Watch would use its speakers to eject any water that might have seeped in. Turns out that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are capable of doing the same thing as well, or at least that’s according to a post on Reddit by PointlessPankcake. According to the post, he accidentally got his iPhone wet and water got into the speaker grill, creating a muffled sound. He tried rubbing alcohol in hopes that it would evaporate the water, and when that didn’t work, he decided to try and emulate the Apple Watch’s feature with an app called “Sonic”. He generated a tone that literally pushed the water out of the speaker. You may have to change the tone a little to get the water out of your phone, just know that it’s close to 165. Anyways, while the tone is playing, you will see little drops or bubbles bouncing out of the speaker, take a piece of absorbent material and dab them up as they come out of the speaker grill. Now we can’t speak to how effective this is or whether or not it actually works, but if you do encounter such a problem and you’re trying to figure out a way to eject the water from your iPhone 7’s speakers, perhaps this could be something worth trying. MSI have demonstrated its VR backpack called the VR One. It’s a computer that can be worn like a backpack and optimized for the HTC Vive headset, allowing users to walk around freely in their virtual worlds without the leashed constraints of cables. Of course, cables are still involved, but with the VR One, the computer is no longer the anchor. But don’t get your hopes up of running around with a computer on your back all day. The VR One comes with two rechargeable, hot-swappable battery packs, one inserted on each side of the unit, that provides up to 90 minutes of pure VR gameplay combined. As for the system specs, MSI hasn’t exactly been forthcoming before the show, stating that it’s powered by an overclocked, high-end Intel Core i7 processor and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics chip. Device connectivity includes four USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI port, one Mini DisplayPort, one USB Type-C port supporting Thunderbolt 3, a microphone jack, and a headphone jack. It’s overall weight with the batteries intact is just under 8 pounds. Because this is a PC users wear on their back, cooling is a priority given the heat generated between human and machine. The unit’s cooling system relies on two 90mm fans and nine heat pipes, producing less than 41dBA of noise.
