Bi Ki, Ei Sei and Consent

Bi Ki is a rape victim. First we most acknowledge the state of laws at the time, women were in fact property. For Bi Ki's youth she was the property of whoever own her dance company (potentially a brothel, though she likely never had sex with anyone. Courtesan and prostitues aren't exactly one in the same) By buying her Ryo Fui is her owner, then he transfers her to Ei Sei's dad. As by law she is property, Bi Ki does not have full right to extract her consent at any moment and aditionally does not have means to support herself outside of these men.

Further more, after being abandoned she is forced to prostitute herself to stay alive. Though she isn't kicking or screaming, this is rape because she has no other means of survival. A majority of victims experience hypersexuality as a way of coping, as is shown in how she treats her servants once she became the Queen.

I found Ei Sei not sleeping with the girls of his harem when he had the chance to just be Hara putting modern values in his story but considering he grew up in this environment I think it's possible he developed a surprising awareness of consent.

agree! i’m pretty pleased w the way hara handles bi ki’s character, it’s not perfect by any means but she gets far more grace and understanding from the narrative than female characters like her do in my experience. also i believe there was a scene where a young sei returns to the house he and bi ki were living in at the time and says something to the effect of “mother, are you with another man?” plus bi ki herself says straight to sei’s face that “we were forced to quite literally sully ourselves just to be able to eat” so it makes sense that sei would, unfortunately, have been exposed to sexual violence against his mother during his childhood, and maybe have feelings about it
