The thing that gets me always is that on the most basic level, Vasily's plot follows the classic tragic love story trope of a man becoming obsessed with someone on first sight, sacrificing everything just to meet them again, and then, after their tragic death, spending the rest of his life mourning their loss and what could have been if they had more time together

Except that its not about some pretty noble girl out of Vasily's league, but the chud loser asshole who shot him in the face, and instead of shy loving glances they exchange bullets whenever they meet
