Karai heard glass shatter downstairs in the middle of the night. She snuck down, ready to attack whoever had broken in, and instead found Mikey, face in his knees, tucked against the kitchen cabinets. A jar of pickles lay broken on the floor. Mikey was crying.

“Hey,” Karai said slowly.

Mikey nearly jumped out of his skin, looking up and sniffling. He wiped at his eyes. “Sorry… I didn’t mean to, sorry…”

“It’s okay,” Karai leaned down to pick up some of the glass. “It was an accident.”

Mikey whimpered a bit and hid his face in his arms. “I just wanted a snack, I was hungry, and– and–”

“Mikey, it’s okay,” Karai insisted. “Really.” She tossed the glass she could pick up in the trash.

“Everyone’s busy,” Mikey cried. “And I can’t sleep, I keep having nightmares! I thought if I– Maybe Raph would come down, and–”

Realization dawned on Karai. He had dropped the jar on purpose.

She slowly sat down beside him. He leaned into her automatically, and she lifted an arm to allow him. She lay her arm over his shoulders and Mikey let out a muffled sob.
