Time Post-Critique Response
The strengths of this project was that the idea came across well and was recognizable. The weaknesses of the project was that the squares were not uniform in size like intended. But the feedback I received suggested that the "jaggedness" of the lines were very stylistic and was well liked.
I was able to increase my knowledge and skills in embroidery and sewing. I had to learn new techniques and how to using beeswax and other items to make the pieces better.
I could see myself doing something similar, but instead of choosing one moment or feeling throughout the day, I would choose a highlight of the week to embroider. And to make the squares bigger.
Time Artist Statement
For my Time Project, I have chosen to document each day with a something that happened that day with embroidery. Each day, I am using embroidery thread and floss to create images to represent how I felt or something that happened that day. In each post under each photo, I am adding a brief description so that the viewer has context of which square means. The process has been tedious, especially in the more detailed pieces. I have figured the purpose of a thimble and I have gone through two plastic ones and a cheaper metal one. My right finger nail bed is in pain. My thumb and forefinger are bruised from struggling to pull the needle through fabric. I would use a smaller needle but then the floss wouldn't go through and all the threaders I have used have broken apart. The final will be around 27x30" if all the squares are truly 3 inches.
Time Project Artwork
Time Project - Monday 4/12 - Saturday 4/17/2021
Monday: Our clay shoes finally came out of the kiln for my ceramics class so I was finally able to get some paint on it. It turned out really well and I'm happy with the results.
Tuesday: Got out to see the fish again. For the last time (maybe). It's a little bittersweet. My friend and I have named all the fish in the pond and it's gonna be sad that I can't see them ona regular basis anymore.
Wednesday: My friend and I scheduled a zoom meeting for us to catch up and talk. It still feels like we don't have much to talk about. Even when it will go months between. Our lives have changed.
Thursday: I received an email from the head of the Psychology department and was told that I received my honor cords. Honestly didn't expect to graduate with honors but I somehow managed to graduate cum laude. I pick them up on Tuesday.
Friday: I went into work today and filed charts. We are still under staffed in the office and I don't think that's going to change since it sounds like Dr. Nelson is retiring soon. She had no plans of seeing patients in office. If doesn't help that she's fearful of people who refuse to wear a mask.
Saturday: I celebrated my 4 year anniversary with my partner. It seems like so much longer than that.
The final piece is 30x20.5" at it's longest and tallest. I guess some of my measuring was off for the squares.
Place Post-Critique
Some strengths of my project were that it was recognized what my project was about. Also my peers were able recognize the bright colors and warm feelings that I was trying to compare against the colder images from the empty house in the Zillow ads. My weaknesses were that some of the textures in the trees were out of place and needed some more love. I was told that using a cotton swab and alcohol to fix the texture in the trees, which I will probably implement after some experimentation. I learned more about using alcohol markers and how to use more layering.
I can imagine continuing this line of research since I want continue to use alcohol markers. I think that they are really fun to use and almost like using watercolor. Next time, I would like to do more portraits.
Place Artist Statement
For my Place Project, I want to take a trip through my memory of what I can remember most from my great-grandmother's house. My great-grandmother passed away when I was a freshman in high school and my great-uncle fixed up her house, completely remodeled it, then put it up for sale. Every time I drive passed the house, I get emotional. So I want this project to help me remember what is lost. I used the Zillow ad of the house to take each room listed and redraw them from my memory.
I am using Strathmore 6x8 " marker paper, Studio 71 alcohol markers, miscellaneous markers that have no branding, Micron fine-liners, and printer paper images from the Zillow advertisement. To say the process has not made me emotional is a bit of an understatement. The house looks so different now and it is hard to remember that it will never be the same place. Later in her life, my great-grandmother developed dementia among her other ailments and she slowly forgot who I was. This made me not want to be around her, and I didn't get to see her before she passed away. I also want to do this project because I found myself forgetting things, like the color of the wall paper, the rug in the living room. I had to ask my mom for help with the wall paper since I don't want to leave it plain white.
Time Post- Monday 4/5 - Sunday 4/11/2021
Monday: According to Best Hall, roasting their students is a good idea.
Tuesday: This is one of the last times I will feed the koi fish in the pond. I'll miss them. Even if they are dumb.
Wednesday: as far as my self worth goes, Wednesday is my worst day. I just feel exhausted and that I can't do anything.
Thursday: I completed my exit counseling for my student loans. It was kind of scary seeing the total. But I think I can get it done.
Friday: I had a physical for the first time in a while. And I had my first pap smear. My old doctor told me I had to wait till I was 25, but my new female doctor was concerned I hadn't had one yet.
Saturday: This is my Nemesis. I always forget this in my room.
Sunday: So after a misunderstanding with my supposed friend and after expressing how I felt, I am rude and selfish and I am no longer welcome at her house.
Final Week
Place Proposal
Each project begins with a proposal/statement of intent. Your statement should be a short declarative description of what you intend to do for the project. In your description, you should include details of the intended FORM, PROCESS, and CONTENT of the project. Your statement should be at least 2 paragraphs long.
My project would be to take pictures from a Zillow ad of my great grandmother's house and making a separate drawing of how I remember the house from memory. Both pictures will be 6x8 inches. I will be using printer paper, Strathmore marker paper, Studio 71 markers, and Micron fine-liners. I will be displaying the pieces along with different items from her house that I have.
The process would be to copy the general room shape onto the marker paper and then coloring it with markers. By creating this, I would be continuing to deal with grief I have from her death. Even now I still cry when I drive past the place. Whenever I would go to my great grandma's, I would always play with the little toys, color, and watch movies.
Place Project Research Journal
A project Research Journal is three artwork images that relate to your ideas for the project in form, process, or content. Artworks can come from one or multiple artists. Think of this as doing research that will aid in the completion of your artwork. Try to find artists you're inspired by and try to avoid obvious/cliché/ubiquitous artworks (like the Mona Lisa or the Statue of David). I would also prefer you to find more contemporary-ish artists (1900-present), unless there is a compelling reason that historical artworks are relevant to your project. This is a great opportunity to find new artists!
For each artwork selected, list the artist’s name, a web link to the location of the image, and answer the following: Describe the form of the work. Make an attempt to discern the content of the work (what is the message?). Describe the artist’s process as you think it might have been done (how was the work built?). Why did you choose this work?
Doug Aitken - Mirage
- The form of the work is a house that is built in the desert. After building the house, he covered the outside in mirrors, the house blends into the surroundings, even through out the day.
“Like a human-scale lens, Mirage works to frame and distort the evolving world outside of it. There is no single time to view this work, as each variation provides something new…There is no fixed perspective or correct interpretation. Each experience of this living artwork will be unique.” - Aitken.
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen - Spponbridge and Cherry
- It is the vision of a spoon holding a cherry, but the spoon is larger than the average kitchenware. Meant to draw attention in from a distance. It is located in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The cherry is 30ft long and the spoon is 50 ft long and is located around a small pond in the park.
Spiral Jetty - Robert Smithson
- Spiral Jetty was made using mud, precipitated salt crystals, and basalt rocks and is 1,500 feet long. It was made for the 1970 film Spiral Jetty. Smithson combined his interests in geology, paleontology, astronomy, mythology and cinema for this project to capture "earth's history".
Monday 3/29 - Monday 4/5/2021
Monday: I accidentally put this in the Sunday spot but that's okay. There's are the colors of the sticky notes I used to make all the notes in my classic mythology books.
Tuesday: I finally finished the 5 hours of video lectures I was behind on.
Wednesday: After the exam that wasn't even as hard as I thought. I felt like garbage after stress eating the past week.
Thursday: I visited the koi fish again. Just to relax.
Friday: I went to Bath and Body works for new perfume. It was the first time I went by myself and spent my own money. And it is extremely expensive. But I have a perfume that smells like strawberry candy now.
Saturday: I think I'm sick of pizza. Which tem year old me would find blasphemous.
Sunday: Happy Easter. My dead beat dad texted me an hour before dinner to ask me to come to his. I declined.
Monday: After classes I stopped by the koi pond again since it was nice out. My face got sunburned.

Place Project Ideas
Submit 3 project ideas responding to the project theme (PLACE). Each idea should be a paragraph (~5 sentences) in length and should detail the form (what will it be made of? what will it look like?), process (how will you make it?), and content (what will it mean/signify/represent/be about?) of your proposed project. Sketches are encouraged.
1. To take pictures from the Zillow ad for my great-grandmothers house and recreating them in the way that I remember them looking. I never really quite handled her death properly and I feel like it might help doing this project.
2. 4 separate drawing of what each dorm room I’ve lived in looks like. Each time the room and the people I lived with changed so that might be an interesting way to show how the style changed.
3. A trip in pictures of what the walk to the ceramics studio. I take the same path every day and I would document things I would see through out the trip.
Post Critique Response - Identity
The strengths of the finished product were that I was pleased with the outcome and my peers seemed to like it as well. One of the weaknesses was that it could not be an interactive experience as intended.
I learned a lot from this project. I learned more sewing techniques and how to properly sew things together.
I may continue this in the future but not the same as before. Less personal.
Time Post - Monday 3/22 - Sunday 3/28/2021
Monday: I finished my identity Project so I'm pretty happy with myself. I worked really hard on it and it turned out really good.
Tuesday: Since it was so nice out today, my roommate and I went on a walk and fed the koi fish in the pond on campus. It was really nice way to relax.
Wednesday: I'll say it once, I'll say it a million times: 19 credits was a mistake. Last semester I took 18, but three of those credits were gym credits. Should I have done the same thing this semester? Yes. But the gym courses I had either already taken or there weren't enough.
Thursday: My mom said to me: Don't be stressed." As if she has any idea what I'm going through.
Friday: I really had to babysit a 21 year old adult. When she gets drunk, she gets hyper and honestly, she makes me not want to drink.
Saturday
Sunday: Nothing really happened today. I stayed home, had a mac N cheese. Pretty good day.
