Neil being a demisexual and how obvious it is by how he uses simple terms when meeting people like just saying their hair and eye color. He doesn't even bother describing people he doesn't find important. Meanwhile the difference between meeting Andrew for the first time vs him having fallen in love with him has Neil waxing poetry about Andrew and it's so funny. Miser i don't swing was down bad by the second book.
First time meeting Andrew: "Andrew Minyard didn't look like much in person, blonde and five feet even."
After falling in love with Andrew: "Andrew looked as he always had, and Neil knew his face as well as he knew every iteration of his own. Despite that, something seemed different. Maybe it was the sunlight streaming through the window, making Andrew’s pale hair shine brighter and his hazel eyes seem almost gold. Whatever it was, it was disorienting. A wordless question buzzed under Neil’s skin, leaving him restless and out-of-sorts."
I went to an exhibition on the history of migration and colonial rhetoric in Australia and it really helped me to pinpoint my exact issue with the way non-Australians (and. tbh. some aussies) talk about this country
this map is a piece of propaganda from 1921. honestly what shocked me about it was how little of Australia is marked out as “uninhabited”. I have seen maps shared around on this website that basically mark out the entirety of non-coastal Australia as “empty”. fucking colonialists from 1921 were more generous than some of you
the history of colonial Australia is a history of “taming the untameable land”. this has been reinforced through narratives that this country is:
inherently dangerous
uninhabitable
empty
this rhetoric survives in both the way Australia is imagined by non-Australians and in the self-image of Australia. the (white) aussie battler conquers the unconquerable. the outback is imagined as a post-apocalyptic hellscape. our fauna is categorised as uniquely hellish and unwieldy. so when non-Australians make joke after joke about how scared they are of this place. well you can imagine why it fills me with the kind of rage that can only be generated by the understanding that You Are Reinforcing Colonialism
For those who haven't seen a map of Indigenous Nations in Australia:
A link to the interactive version, since as you can see there are more cultures than can legibly fit in a single image.
Being a bisexual emperor must be the most stressful shit in the world. You go to the inner palace and all your wives are scheming. You go to the outer court and all the male concubines that you promoted to viziers through nepotism are fighting. Your wife just poisoned your favorite twink eunuch. There’s no peace

we (still) call everything on the ice 'love'
huge fan of the depth of a good purple but another area that draws me is definitely around aquamarine/turquoise/seafoam. you can not go wrong once the green starts getting just a tinge more blue. a gal could certainly do worse than to pull over there and stay a while
something earth shattering going on here
this is why one of my favorite all-time paintings is Ship in Stormy Seas by Ivan Aivazovsky... he was really onto something there

THERE IS A BOAT BY IVAN AIVAZOVSKY!!
Ivan Aivazovsky could paint glowing water. One of the GOATs for sure.

Neil, obviously in love with Andrew: My chest hurts and my stomach feels weird every time I'm around him. I don't know what to do.
Allison: I think it's time for you to confess.
Neil, confused: To Andrew?
Allison: Well, obviously.
*Later that day*
Neil: I killed a man.
Andrew: What the fuck.
Imagine how it feels to be Sidney Crosby. There are like 10 fictional characters based on you. They’re all calling you autistic and gay. Right now the very popular one is getting fucked within an inch of his life for 40 minutes every week. They’re making fun of your weird diet. They put your fortress of solitude McMansion “cottage” and TV spot about it in the episode. And they used your tax dollars to do it.
