Why, Howdy-Owdy You Do?

This video (it has spoilers) does a good job of explaining some feelings I have about the hbo adaptation of the last of us - at least the first season, since I noped out of season 2 lol

The main thesis of the video is about how the show updates aspects of the story in order to address criticisms of the game (especially the second one), similar to what we see in the Disney remakes. BUT the thing that stood out to me was the idea that changing certain things to address those criticisms fundamentally changes the characters /themes in the story .

Spoilers for the last of us show and game to follow

In terms of how that relates to my feelings on S1 - I feel the versions of Joel and Ellie in the show are different than who we got to know in the games. They are their own characters and they have their own relationship to each other. As a result, some of the parts that they take straight from the game feel off, but parts added for the show work really well because they’re written for the characters created for it

For example - towards the end of S1, Joel and Ellie have a conversation that’s straight from the game about how their journey “can’t be for nothing”. It didn’t quite hit for me . But later in the same episode this scene plays where Joel reveals he tried to kill himself and that really hit for me. I don’t think this conversation is in the game (correct me if I’m wrong tho).

To me, it feels like the kind of conversation that HBO Joel and Ellie would have! But video game Joel wasn’t ready to be that vulnerable, with Ellie - at least not verbally. HBO Joel is more outwardly expressive in with Ellie, probably because the writers had him telling a lot more than showing lol.

I dunno I guess this is very obvious - making changes means things are different of course. But that was my second biggest like, “note” for S1. It makes me wonder what the show could have been if they just got a script and shot it blind without seeing anything from games lol

P.S. My actual biggest note was Tes’ death. They did her dirty with that scene , completely took her confidence and agency away.

New Meet the Artist!

I was gonna make a whole comic out of this idea, but I felt like this was a more efficient way to share what  I wanted to say. I’m gonna submit this to a zine called We Skate Too - fingers crossed it will be accepted, but if not i’m still pretty happy with it!

got invited to a 7 day game jam that was killed by the programmers in 3 days lol. here's some animation i did.

i don't know how technically good this is, but this is the first time I've animated since college and I'm happy with how it came out!
