The photographs came out quite well considering I had to make them by myself.
No room for failure. I need to get this done and make it look good. I got hold of three companies trying to ask if they could print the packaging for me professionally if I did the design work. Obviously being a student they did not take me seriously and I didn't get a follow up response from either of them.
So I had to make the boxes myself.
When creating tea packaging it is the process of trial and error. I am not a mathematician so trying to figure out the circumference of the circles took a while and led me to go and get this printed a few times.
However I figured out it is not just about the numbers. It also depends on the thickness of the paper. In this project I am using 250 eggshell offwhite card, which I did not think would effect the fold. I was wrong.
Never get anything printed at Hot Ink, they are shit and made me pay for work that I should not have!
Logo design
Logo inspiration
Throughout the year we were required to do drop in briefs - sometimes they can be fun, and other times not so much. We are give a weeks period to come up with a concept for the task at hand as well as executing, which can then be refined at a later date.
This drop brief required a new brand of rooibos tea to be rebranded in South Africa, Unites States of America and Europe, specifically for sales online. As well as a new name which needed to be original to the target countries, as well as a logo design which needed to be created.
In order to do this, I needed to make myself aware of the brand problems that needed to be engaged. First, how will I find an original rooibos tea package design, name and logo that does not yet exist - without some how plagiarising a current standing design, as the tea has been around for a long time (1900) and all forms of identification of the tea would most likely have already been used. Secondly, finding a specific target market would be difficult because tea is very regularly consumed by all people all ages. In order to solve these problems I needed to do my own research on the origin of
In order to effectively reach my target market and advertise the new packaging through specifically chosen contact points, in order to increase sales and portray an authentically african design reflecting South Africa’s history of the late Khoisan bushmen.
the tea and the history of ‘Rooibos’ and in order to create a new design relating to the task at hand.
I chose a colour scheme that would best represent colours of Africa, as well as the colours found in the name ‘Rooibos’ which translates to ‘Red-bush’ in Afrikaans. In doing this I came up with three suitable colours that I believed best represented the tea (red, orange and dark purple). Each colour held a specific link to Africa. The red linking to the sand in which the bush men grew their grass in the red sand.
Orange with a close tint to brown to reflect the hot sun that shines down on the plant and a purple for the Khoisan who were apart of the discovery.
When looking for ideas of the logo it was ideal to look for something different in order to emphasis the concept of ‘out of Africa’ tea. After looking for the obvious designs such as cave paintings and the Rooibos plant, I decided to change my view by zooming out and focused on the African concept and looked at african masks. As a result I found myself constructing a minimal line drawing of an african mask as I found this would best portray the an African feel.
The name of brand is pretty self explanatory as the Rooibos plant is based in Africa, it would only make sense to sell the product at its true identity. In doing this I came up with the name ‘OUT OF AFRICA’.
When it came to creating the contact points I had to think of three different mediums that would work best when trying to reach the tea target market. A gift card, tea package design as well as a voucher were created as the different contact points. The gift card idea was advertising that would encourage consumers to purchase a box of tea online and get the second one free, as well as the option to chose the rooibos flavour of their choice. The second contact point would be a information pamphlet that contains all their is to know about the tea and where to purchase it. Thirdly is the product itself which has been designed to portray the african feel and show some diversity.
In conclusion the tea packaging created was inspired by being truly african in my roots and finding a way that would best represent this brand identity and attract the tea lovers out there.
So here is my Rooibos tea brief.
At the time of the drop in there were specifications to the size of the packaging and what is required. which it what I did for my first drop in hand in. As it came closer to portfolio I thought it would be best to push my design and colour scheme however adjust the packaging size in order to fit my concepts better.
I hope you love this as much as I do, it basically took me two semesters to do and I think it is one of the best pieces I have ever done. So happy I finally have something to be proud of and call mine from beginning to end. From the art direction, the changing of terminology the make it fit the beach theme to the choosing of paper and finding the best binder in town!
This is how many times I had to remake my digital book, I had deleted the book almost 3 times as I have this really bad habit of deleting files I don't think I need and I thought I have a duplicate of the original file - which by the way I DID NOT!
The sound of the waves beating down on the fine sand, some how creating the most hypnotic sound. The rays from the sun kissing my body allowing it to become blush red. And an ice-cream is just that little cherry on the top making the beach the most peaceful place to be.
A little something something I came up with, just cause I can.
As well as learning art direction our lecturer thought it would be best to also learn the rules of typography, and as a result we ended up incorporating the two together. To add a little more spice we had to come up with a narrative for our book.
I came up with a beach concept because that is me in my most peaceful place.
(cheesy I know)
At the beginning of this year we sat down as a class and discussed with our lecturer where we want to be by the end of the year, and what we would like to explore moving forward.
We all came to the conclusion that we did not have much art direction when it came to producing work and well that is the selling point of most products in the advertising world, so it was necessary that we grasp the concept.
This is how the class was for like a split second 😂
I did this all by myself!
I have recently been inspired by my one of my class mates who has a knack for this kind of stuff, she has been so helpful and just so happy to teach and guid me in the right direction, which I didn't think was possible, as it is everyone for them selves at Vega.
Originally the idea was to make my own illustrations to place in the book, but that was very quickly rejected. So I was sent back to the drawing board.
