Fascinated by this Dan / Wobé Initiation Gebande Beggar Mask that is a part of our latest African art and artifacts collection. Brian has been lovingly adding details to each of these items, and learning about them is certainly fascinating. Pieter Jan Vandenhoute, author of “Classification stylistique du masque Dan et Guéré de la Cote d'Ivoire occidentale” (1948), distinguished two large groups of Dan Masks: the Gebande and the Genome. Gebande is the most sacred examples of Dan Masks while Genome is a lower rank of Masks. The classifications relate to the content which the Dan attribute to the Mask, rather than the appearance of the Mask. Gebande Masks can be divided into a series of subgroups and categories, and this particular example is a Beggars’ Mask, whose primary purpose would be to be used in the collection of offerings for ancestors. Hand crafted in forest wood with a decoration of cotton fabric, inlaid with cowry shells and bells in bronze, this example is a true beauty. He grows into a world as scary and strange as it is and if the child must succeed he has to tame his charms, hone his talents and conquer the world. The result; this child is either celebrated or rejected by his own people. If he comes out victorious he belongs to the entire village and maybe to the world but should things go south he belongs his mother alone. How dare you picasso...how dare you?! how dare you deny that you didn’t get influence from African sculptures, how dare you take these African Masks and put them on caucasian women, how dare you?!! masks are sacred and so are our bodies. merging my two favourite things myself + masks into one painting has reaffirmed my purpose. I am able to channel my own visions into my own masks but portraying them on myself because I am the maker.

Observation, spirituality, transformation & identity are subject matters I express with my work. I am addressing the power of representation, reclamation, transformation & liberation in response to picasso’s les desmoiselles d’avignon.
