Yep happened monday, not a problem you say, get a man out, you say except we are nearly out of gas and I want to switch supplier and pay for a bulk load in the summer. Its LPG so not mains and these companies try to keep you tied to them by reducing your direct debit and once a year refunding overpaid money. This results in a constant debt to them. MrP so far has been good but not sure how long it will last, we have an open fire and lots of low cost heaters about so should be good. Well this is me, this was taken on a rare, not often enough visit to my daughter and we were just about to go and see Chicago in the West End, I think. I have managed to scrape, scrimp and hustle my way into my 50s often on a wing and a prayer, many times facing debt and clawing my way out many times too. You would think I would have learnt back in my 20s when I first faced debt but life has always had a habit of biting me in the behind. I am what you would call a tad unlucky, not that I feel unlucky, it's just that if it’s going to happen it will and to me.

So a few weeks in and how am I doing Quite surprising really, I expected a bit of a washout as I have previously tried the paying with cash only before and it was a right disaster, spending all the weeks money in a couple days . This time I really think its divvying the money that has done the trick, instead of having one big pot in a purse, this money now has jobs, the many envelopes reinforce this mentally, by dividing the money it stops me pilfering it for other things. My New Year Commitment #1 was Budget, dont skimp, so I thought I would get on board with the cool 💷💷 cash envelope system. Got these little babies 👛👛 cheap from @amazonukonline yesterday. Don't they look snazzy. Hopefully they will stop me dipping into my cash pocket for things that aren't envelope related, always a pitfall for me when I have cash. New Year Commitment and by far the toughest. I have to say I had to give this a lot of thought before finally adding this one. The others were easy, they were obvious in both what I need to do but also they or variants of them are the usual fodder for the new year BUT this one is special. You see my world is full of mental illness where NO brings all kinds of problems, say no means we are broke, say no brings recriminations of what I have done with his money, saying no brings tantrums, saying no means we are less of a human being than our neighbours and saying no is denying that instant constant gratification that all cptsd sufferers crave. Saying NO for me is so hard, I am bullied into a YES with a look or the way something is worded, the sheer thought of saying NO is terrifying but I must, it has kept us from so many things, plans are never finished because saying YES changes everything, it has changed our lives too many times. Its such a catch 22, by giving in all the time I am not paying our mortgage down which is so important to us. New Year Commitment - SAVE 10%. This is for our "senior years" Yes we should have a retirement plan, do we, NO. We never quite got there, lots has happened in our lives and at times saving for next week was an impossibility let alone for years ahead, at times I have struggled to feed us. New Year Commitments, the first of four. DON'T SKIMP ON BUDGETING. I do this a lot, hold my hands up here, usually its with food, my head goes "budget is £70 this week" reality is £100 💷💷 so I skimp and have to rob savings categories, this results in serious underfunding. By budgeting the true amount I can then be realistic with savings, being realistic means I don't feel like a failure. Ok confession time, I am a closet pyromaniac. So far in my life I have set fire to my oven 3 times, numerous grills and pans, the microwave, a steamer, a slow cooker and melted a chip fryer. Tonight was the turn of the trusted Kenwood Gourmet, now please to be fair to @kenwoodworld this dear thing is 40 years old, I was a wedding gift from my aunt 30 years ago and she had had it 10 years. I was only making pastry for mince pies and it started smoking, I was oblivious to it until the acrid smell hit me, oops. Like most people I would buy lottery tickets every week in the hope that one day my luck would come in, every week I would cross fingers and toes hoping like mad it was my turn. I would watch week after week millionaires being made and every week my dreams would be crushed, we barely won a few £/$ let alone the big one. I then read I had more chance of being struck by lightening, not once but twice!!!! It got me thinking, apart from there being no realistic chance of winning, yes I know if you don't play you don't win, what if I didn't play. At first it was odd but as time went by I felt liberated, my future was in my hands, my luck was of my making not some external chance game. MrsP's #moneytips - for many years I have never had sinking funds or emergency funds, always thinking I must pay debts, I must pay debts, like a mantra. The effects of not having sinking funds are quite catastrophic, a sudden expense occurs and bam everything goes out the window, it all goes wrong because you dont have that pot available to absorb the emergency, debts and bills now go unpaid due to trying to gets funds together to cover what ever it is.
