Whose lived womanhood is this? It’s not my lived womanhood. I am not simply a ‘woman’ whose experiences can be completely separated from my race as if they are not completely interlinked. My experiences with womanhood and a white woman’s experiences with womanhood-or any woman of color;s -cannot and will not be lumped in as two completely similar things.
Black womanhood is scrubbing your dark skin extra hard as a child hoping you can scrub your ‘dirty’ skin clean
Black womanhood is having your hair twisted, pulled, burnt with caustic chemicals, burnt with flat irons all for straight hair, only to have it never grow, crying and sobbing before putting on a wig or a weave
Black womanhood is growing up seeing nothing but lightskinned and white women on television, in movies, and magazines, and feeling like a monster
Black womanhood is being told that your sole duty is to take care of Black men, because ‘if we don’t take care of each other then we have no one’
Black womanhood is only seeing white lesbians on television, on Tumblr, and in media. Black womanhood is not being able to relate to white lesbian books but reading them anyway because fuck it it’s all you have.
Black womanhood is ‘fast tailed girls’ and being raped at 12 years old, only to have your parents blame you for being ‘fast’
Black womanhood is fighting to be recognized as human, not a beast of burden to toil in the fields, not mammy, not Jezebel, not an animal.
Black womanhood is to constantly have our experiences stolen by white women to use in Internet arguments, while they simultaneously ignore our lived experiences for white-centric definitions of what constitutes as ‘womanhood’
Black womanhood is being expected to spend your entire life in service to everyone else- Black men white women Black community- all while never allowing to focus on yourself and your unique issues.
Black womanhood is being called a wellfare queen, a leech on the system, or a breeder and be used as examples of why the world should use birth control, because no one wants anymore nigger babies
Black womanhood is being sexually abused at younger and younger ages because everyone knows that Black women are sluts, whores, hypersexual animals
Black womanhood is living and loving and fucking fighting to be recognized as a human despite even though the world sees you as nothing more than nigger
